   After reading this novel, my standards for all future boyfriends was raised tenfold. Jackson is a time traveler. He discovered his ability when he was eighteen, a college freshman. Eight months have passed since then and he has let Adam, an MIT student and close friend, in on his secret. With Adam’s help, Jackson is able to slowly extend his travels to the past. The time he expends working on his ability, though, is cutting into the time he spends with his girlfriend,Holly. Jackson sometimes stands Holly up or leaves her waiting for him during their dates. They are still a strong couple and truly love each other. Then one day, a man shoots Holly, killing her and results in Jackson hurling himself two years into the past. This jump to the past is different than his other trips; Jackson is trapped without a way to return to Holly and the present. In the past, Jackson must face memories that haunt him and learn about his ability if he wants to be able to save Holly.
Jackson is probably one of the best male characters I have ever read about. He’s smart, valiant, and has a good heart. Cross created the ideal boyfriend when she wrote Tempest. Jackson strives to protect the people he cares about above all else. He is a good friend and a hard worker. Holly is funny, smart, and brave; she is a good match for Jackson. When attacked, Holly does not wait for Jackson to protect her, she tries to protect Jackson.
Julie Cross has a great style that’s fun to read. She created every character to have a personality and depth. None of the characters Cross fashioned are static, they all have dimensions. This book seems meant for a teen and young adult audience. College students and High School aged readers will love this novel. Tempest earns five out of five stars, it’s a great read I will not soon forget.
