Loving Lady Marcia by Kieran Kramer

Wednesday, August 29, 2012

LOVING LADY MARCIA Kieran Kramer In the House of Brady, three very lovely girls have hair of gold—and hearts to match—but finding a match among the gentlemen of London is one comedy of errors that could bring down the house… MARCIA GETS SCHOOLED…Of the three Brady sisters, Lady Marcia has always seemed the girl most likely to lead a perfectly charmed life. But after a handsome cad breaks her heart, she swears off love and devotes her life to teaching girls at a private school. In spite of her family’s wish for a London debut, Marcia is happy where she is—until terrible news sends her back to the Brady clan…and into the arms of an unexpected suitor. ON THE SUBJECT OF LOVE A dark and dashing earl who knows Marcia’s past, Duncan Lattimore is surprised by what a fascinating and independent woman she’s become. Marcia, too, is surprised—by the fiery attraction she feels for Duncan. But why—why—must he be the brother of the scoundrel who broke her heart? Why must Marcia’s rival at school forbid her from seeing him? How can this lady possibly resist this fellow—when they know that it’s much more than a hunch…? “A delicious romp that will keep you laughing.”—Sabrina Jeffries (on Kieran Kramer’s Impossible Bachelor series)

Goodreads Summary

In early 19th century London, the Irish Marquess of Brady married the widowed mother of golden-haired Marcia, Janice, and Cynthia. With the Marquess’ Gregory, Peter, and Robert, the eight Bradys form a close-knit family. Their estate called Ballybrook across the Irish Sea is maintained by Alice, their housekeeper, and Tiger, the family pet. As the oldest girl, Marcia would have been expected to enter the London social scene as one of the foremost debutantes in her season. Instead, Marcia has chosen to remain at her boarding school where she becomes headmistress. She loves the school and all the girls who study there. However, her primary reason for avoiding the marriage market is an unfortunate, brief love affair at age sixteen. Now, she finds herself fighting to keep her position at the school, facing the handsome cad who “ruined” her, and being courted by the cad’s brother. Duncan Latimore, who always feels he must right his brother’s wrongs, wants to court Marcia; not so much to correct the past…but because he finds her caring nature, beauty, and independent attitude fascinating.
I like the Brady Bunch – the ones who wore bellbottoms and – now- the ones who wear stunning bonnets straight from Paris. The situations and dialogue between the sisters, brothers, mom, and dad are loving and comedic. Just like Marcia in the TV show, London Marcia could drive me crazy with her over-enthusiasm. Then later, she always has to deal with the consequences. Reading the early story, I wanted to shout at her to be less starry eyed about the “cad”. I enjoyed reading the gossipy, well-meant comments of Dr. Trimp. Duncan’s attempts to improve his brother’s character hark back to the Brady family loyalty, but I was so relieved when he finally considers that Finn’s character might be beyond redemption. The play between little Joe and the Duke of Beauchamp is fun to read. If I had a problem with the story, it is the idea of Marcia sneaking into the garden shed to fool around…not just kisses. For me, my difficulty with the story is separating California Marcia from London Marcia in the romance department. I doubt this will trouble readers who’ve never seen many episodes of the TV show.

What Happens Next by Colleen Clayton: Review, Interview, ARC Giveaway!

Tuesday, August 28, 2012

How can you talk about something you can’t remember?

Before the ski trip, sixteen-year-old Cassidy “Sid” Murphy was a cheerleader (at the bottom of the pyramid, but still...), a straight-A student, and a member of a solid trio of best friends. When she ends up on a ski lift next to handsome local college boy, Dax Windsor, she’s thrilled; but Dax takes everything from Sid—including a lock of her perfect red curls—and she can’t remember any of it.

Back home and unable to relate to her old friends, Sid drops her college prep classes and takes up residence in the A/V room with only Corey “The Living Stoner” Livingston for company. But as she gets to know Corey (slacker, baker, total dreamboat), Sid finds someone who truly makes her happy. Now, if she can just shake the nightmares and those few extra pounds, everything will be perfect... or so she thinks.

witty and poignant, Colleen Clayton’s stunning debut is a story about moving on after the unthinkable happens.

Advance Praise for WHAT HAPPENS NEXT:

"Colleen Clayton's gutsy characters stuck with me long after I finished reading What Happens Next." --Lucy Christopher, author of the Printz Honor book STOLEN

"I absolutely devoured this book, and found myself reading the final pages more and more slowly, trying to put off seeing it end. I haven't been this in love with a set of characters in maybe forever." --Jennifer Brown, author of HATE LIST

"Real teenagers. Real issues. Real writing. I read "What Happens Next" in one big swoop. Heartbreaking, but still filled with hope and promise, author Colleen Clayton knows that the past can't be rewritten, but you can ruin the future by not learning from it." -- Holly Goldberg Sloan, author of I'LL BE THERE

"Sad, funny, and true. This book hits all the right notes." --Miranda Kenneally, author of CATCHING JORDAN

Goodreads Summary

What Happens Next touches on many difficult topics that the author handles with ease and poise.    The reader will get to know Cassidy aka "Sid" very well, coming to admire her brave exterior.  Sid was raped and, although she is repressing the memory, the rape still hurts her emotionally.  Sid is withdrawn and a little hard to get to know, but reading further into the book to peal more of Sid's layers is well worth the wait.   Sid is lucky to meet Corey, a guy that many people would skip over, but one who turns out to make all the difference to Sid.  He has a way of healing her and a very interesting personality.

The story has a hint of romance and an air of mystery.  Sid doesn't really remember the rape, but the rape has lingering, negative effects.  The rape itself is not overly graphic and the subject of eating disorders adds another layer of reality to the story.  Sid is a character who will be nearly impossible to connect, the reader is just about guaranteed to connect to her on an emotional level.  Overall, this book is recommended to teens and young adults.

Interview:

1) Tell us a little bit about your inspiration for this book.

In regards to themes, I wanted to write a bookdealing with sexual assault and its effect on a survivor’s body image. Studies have shown that victims of sexual assault are at risk for developing eating disorders so I wanted to explore that connection.

Being from the Cleveland area, I definitely wanted to set my story there. The main character came to me fully formed. I had an image in my head of young, red-haired woman on a ski-lift talking to an engaging stranger.  I wanted the main character to be very vivacious and outspoken, funny, and friendly but also naïve and, deep down, terribly insecure.

2)  What can we expect from Cassidy?

You can expect Cassidy (Sid) to be a very witty girl who deals with her situation in her own unique way.  Cassidy definitely has her own ideas about things. She’s fiercely independent and is a fighter through-and-through.

3)  Was there a character that was difficultto write about or create?  Why?

Sometimes, through the drafting process, I felt Sid’s two best friends, Kirsten and Paige, were difficult to figure out. While they are an important part of the story, they are side characters so I had todo a bit of hard work to make them come alive on the page.

4) Who was your favorite character to write about?

Sid, of course. But next in line would be Corey. Holy wow, do I love that boy. Writing him into existence was one of the most fulfilling experiences I have ever had as a writer. I’m really, really proud of that character.

5) Are you currently working on another book?

I am! I just turned a draft into my agent! It’s set in the same high school but is a stand-alone with different characters and themes.  I’m really excited about it.

Sugar Walls Book Blurb Blitz Tour!

Sunday, August 26, 2012
Summary:

When Emilie is dumped by her boyfriend, best friend Jack Voss offers a shoulder and a place to live--the other side of his duplex. He’s always there, fixing her problems, her car, her sink. Emilie doesn’t know what she’d do without him, or with the feelings she’s having for him. His shoulder doesn’t just offer comfort anymore; his touch is a turn-on. Their shared wall is the only thing keeping them from sharing a bedroom—and fanning the flames might risk breaking something that Jack can’t fix.

Excerpt:

Emilie hadn’t lied about the leak in her pipes.  Just  like she hadn’t broken her dishwasher, or the leg off her couch, or the alternator in her car on purpose. But, to be honest, it was almost a relief when those things happened, because they gave her an excuse to see Jack.

She’d called him first thing this morning when running water for her coffee had resulted in puddles beneath the sink. He’d come over the first chance he’d had and now he was on his hands and knees on the linoleum looking at the pipe that oozed moisture, oblivious to the woman behind him who was also soaking wet, albeit for an entirely different reason.

Painted Blind by Michelle Hansen

Seventeen years old and agoraphobic, Psyche Middleton vows her dad will never see the risqué photos she took during a summer modeling stint abroad, but one of them ends up on a billboard in her Montana hometown. Now everyone—especially her dad—can see it. And yet, somehow, those are the mundane things in her life because she is about to fall unexpectedly, head-over-heels in love with Erik, a mysterious young man who rescues her from a crowd of admirers, and who she’s never actually seen because…he can make himself invisible.
As strange as this may seem, it’s about to get even stranger. Erik takes her to his palace in an idyllic kingdom, and she is swept into the beauty and culture of his world, but his affection has one condition: she may not see him. Overtaken, intrigued, and still not wholeheartedly believing he’s real, Psyche is going to have to decide if she can love him blindly; because if she can’t, she may lose him forever.

Goodreads Summary

What would you do if your not-so-innocent photo ended up on a billboard?  Psyche made a few wrong choices and may pay dearly for them.  She is saved, luckily, by Erik.  Erik is an unusual guy.  Most men want to impress their women at least in part with their looks; instead, he won't let Psyche see him.  It is an odd situation, odder still that Erik takes Psyche to his expensive and private home.  Psyche desperately wants to see her savior, but at what cost? ...and what to do with this "goddess" who seems offended by her very presence.

This story is a retelling of Psyche and Eros.  Psyche was probably my favorite character.  She can be a little bit stubborn and very curious.  She tends to be independent, though there are times when she relies heavily on Erik.  She is very sweet and rarely does the wrong thing (indecent picture aside).  Erik is easy to get annoyed with.  Yes, it's great that he saved Psyche, but what's with the "no seeing" policy?  He seemed a tad ridiculous on that point, I know it's part of the retelling, but I have yet to see a truly valid reason for it.  Aside from that, Erik is a sweet guy.  He definitely deserves Psyche and seems willing to forgive her anything.  Aphrodite, on the other hand, is the opposite.  She looks for ways to interrupt Erik and Psyche's relationship and is always causing trouble.  If there's one character the reader likely will hate it's Aphrodite.

The plot itself followed the Eros and Psyche myth pretty well.  The reader may already know the ending, but the author does have a few tricks up her sleeve-the tasks and descriptions of the setting were perfect.  The book is well-written and the author writes with an edge of mystery.  Overall, this book would be great for adult readers.

Betrayed by Ednah Walters

Friday, August 24, 2012
Lil isn't just an average teenager. She's one of the Nephilim--the descendants of humans and angels--which gives her some serious psi skills and a mission for redemption. Just when Lil thinks she's found a balance between her normal life with human friends and her training to become a Guardian, she's warned that someone close to her will betray her. When the boy she loves starts acting strangely and one of her human friends acquires a supernatural ability, Lil begins to realize that someone is manipulating the people she loves... and won't stop until she's been lured to the dark side.

Goodreads Summary

If you are looking for an average read about nephilim, this is not the book for you.  Ednah Walters wrote a fast-paced, exciting novel with a large, but interesting cast of characters.  Although I did not read the first in the series, I was never confused when reading Betrayed.  This book may be the second of the series, but it could definitely be enjoyed by itself.
I won’t give away much of the plot for fear of ruining the book, but will say that I was never able to predict what would come next.  Lil and Bran’s romance is growing, but secrets keep getting in the way.  Lil’s father is continually trying to draw her to evil and the Guardians have a new mission.  Time will fly as you read.
Teens and young adults will love Betrayed; it has traits of other popular books in this genre, but a flavor all its own.  Every character is driven and awesome.  Lil is passionate, Bran is mysterious, Sykes is hilarious, etc.  I give Betrayed five out of five stars and recommend this book to everyone out there!

The Stranger's Magic: The Labyrinths of Echo, Book Three by Max Frei

The addictive next book by the fantastical bestselling Max Frei the Labyrinths of Echo series–the adventures of Sir Max, who was once a loser but discovers a new world–has been an international literary sensation since its debut. In this new book, Sir Max once again travels to the enchanted parallel world of Echo, where magic is commonplace and where he fits right in. Plunging back into the astounding realm first portrayed in The Stranger (Fandomania.com's #1 Book of 2009) and continued in The Stranger's Woes, Frei's new work that blends fantasy, horror, philosophy, and comedy. Readers will welcome this "utterly original" (Bookslut) volume of the new adventures of Sir Max
Goodreads Summary

This book is mind blowing.  It is a novel that took some effort for me to read because of the detail that Frei gave to his work.  Max Frei’s world is thoroughly described.  A maximum amount of detail is given to everything: characters, descriptions, language, and settings.
All this detail means that many readers will have an easier, more enjoyable experience if they start with the first book in the series.  There is a lot of background that needs to be explained and because of the language barrier, it takes a minute to figure out.  After the reader is caught up with the new vocabulary though, the action, humor, and excitement will have them loving this series.
Personally, I wish I had read the first few books, but I was definitely able to love The Stranger’s Magic as a standalone.  In this novel, Max must save the world.  He and his comrades face-off against the bad guys who are threatening their world.  Anyone could love these books.

Raven's Blood by Deborah Cannon

Haida archaeologist Jake Lalonde dreams the same dreams as his ancestors, and his profession has taken him to strange and fascinating places before. When the corpse of a colleague and friend, Vincent Carpello, appears in the back of a freight truck, however—his stiff hands miming the form of a raven rattle—Jake’s thirst for adventure sets him on a dangerous journey that may just be his last.
At the University of Washington a team of researchers that include Jake’s fiancée, Angeline Lisbon, know that Jake’s now deceased colleague, Vincent Carpello, was on the cusp of a major discovery that had the potential to turn the world upside down. But when a Venus statue is stolen, Jake goes missing, and a cypher disappears, Angeline sets out to find Jake—Interpol’s number one suspect. Tracked by a dubious Interpol agent, Angeline follows the clues that soon lead her to a raven-worshipping goddess cult in the subterranean Mithraic temples of Rome.
In this supernatural archaeological thriller, the shadow of a shaman must help Jake find his way back to the only world he knows so he can save both himself and Angeline—before it is too late.

Goodreads Summary

Bodies, blood, and mystery.  Raven’s Blood takes readers on a fantastic journey with archaeologists and main characters Angeline Lisbon and Jake Lalonde.  Angeline must rescue her fiancé, Jake, who has disappeared and is suspected of murdering a colleague.  I loved this book despite not reading the first three in the series.  Cannon fills her readers in and does not leave them wanting for adventure or great characters.
If there is any justice in the world, this series will be made into movies.  The entire time I read this novel, I was imaging the scenes taking place in my mind.  This is the type of book where you can’t help doing that.
Readers who love mystery and mysticism will love Cannon’s books.  The detail she puts into her work shows and adds to the reading experience.  Every book is set in new, exotic locations loaded with history and intrigue.  Anyone could love this series.

The Lure of Shapinsay by Krista Holle

Ever since Kait Swanney could remember, the old crones of the village have been warning her to stay away from the selkies. They claim that like sirens of old, the seal men creep from the inky waters, shed their skins, and entice women to their deaths beneath the North Sea. But avoiding an encounter becomes impossible when Kait is spotted at the water’s edge, moments after the murder of a half-selkie infant.
Unexpectedly, Kait is awoken by a beautiful, selkie man seeking revenge. After she declares her innocence, the intruder darts into the night, but not before inadvertently bewitching her with an overpowering lure.
Kait obsesses over a reunion deep beneath the bay and risks her own life to be reunited with her selkie. But when she lands the dangerous lover, the chaos that follows leaves Kait little time to wonder—is it love setting her on fire or has she simply been lured?

Goodreads Summary

Written in dialect, The Lure of Shapinsay was an excellent read.  Selkies, seal-humans, have always fascinated me.  They are not mermaids, but humans who live as seals in the ocean and can take off their seal skins to be humans on the land.  These beautiful mythical creatures drive Holle’s story.  The day Kait’s life begins to change is completely normal.  She is at the market, bartering for goods when she learns that her close friend has given birth.  Instead of cheers and celebration, however, everyone is quiet, unnerved, and bitter.  Kait’s friend gave birth to a selkie child.  Believing that he is evil, the baby’s grandfather drowns him in the ocean.  Kait tries to save her friend’s child, but she is too late.  A selkie man sees the events, but thinks that Kait is the murderer!  Eamon, the selkie, seeks revenge for the baby, but falls in love with Kait instead.
Holle drew me into the story from page one.  While reading this book, I laughed, cried, and blushed.  There is a great cast of characters; each is memorable with a distinct personality.  Most adult, female readers would love this novel because of the romance and adventure.

Deep In The Wave: A Surfing Guide to the Soul by Bear Woznick with Lou Aronica

Wednesday, August 22, 2012

For world-class surfer Bear Woznick, the ocean has always been the center of his universe. He's spent his entire life with it; riding its waves, learning from it, loving it. The ocean also nourishes the soul as Bear shows us on his surfboard.
In DEEP IN THE WAVE, readers ride along with Woznick through the calmest of tides and most turbulent waves. Woznick's portrayal of the beauty and power of the ocean is truly inspiring and showcases the profound meaning surfing has had on his life.
From the way a surfboard is painstakingly crafted, to the faith and patience that is required to ride a monster wave, Woznick weaves his relationship to surfing with his relationship to God, relating how the two are often one in the same. Instead of standing on the shore with our toes in the surf, Woznick takes us on the board--to the deep water--to watch and wait--and, if need be, to paddle hard to survive.
Goodreads Summary

Woznick equates a surfer’s giant wave abandonment with a soul-satisfying relationship with God.  He writes that we should “go deep with our Creator”… “die to self and live for God”.  The book is both spiritual guide and autobiography.  From a young age, Woznick felt the pull of the ocean; his writing conveys that feeling for readers.  Other growing up stories about football, friends, and school add to his story.  I was really surprised to learn that as an adult, he worked for a big CPA firm…and then, later started his own accounting firm.  A surfing CPA!  He tells how his friends wondered if he would be a priest because his faith was so deep.  (Priests surf too!)  His account of his solo trip from Molokai to Oahu across the Kaiwi Channel is exhilarating (a shark and man o’ war jellyfish), and the historical and sincere spiritual musings that he includes give the reader a deeper sense of meeting God and really feeling alive.  “Death was knocking.  I felt totally alive.”
Woznick lets readers feel how he finds God in the beauty and power of the huge waves that he rides: “each wave as being a pulse from the very heartbeat of God”.  His stories about the birth and growth of the surf culture interested me – I’ve never heard about it.  His sincerity, sense of wonder, desire to surrender to God, and joy come through in this memoir.

Aftermath: Growing in Grace through Grief by Margaret McSweeney

Loss is a four-letter word that grips our hearts and gridlocks our lives. Grief can hold us captive until we surrender it to God. How do we find the necessary grace to journey through the mourning process? Juxtaposed to the outpouring of her mother's words about grief, the author shares her parallel journey from the emotional abyss of grief after becoming an adult orphan. With candor, the author shares her own emotions experienced along the spectrum of loss after her parents' deaths: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance--adding interactive options for readers. Five sections cover these common emotions and provide: - comfort Scripture lists - counsel sections from grief experts - chronicling sections with detailed helps - tangible handles on dealing with grief during holidays, capturing loved ones' legacy, and more.

Goodreads Summary

“How can one put decorative tissue paper around a wrecking ball?”  That line says it all.  As the book title suggests, so much growth happens through grief, but many painful, hollow years may pass until healing leads you to grace.  Written as a personal response to the deaths of her father and then her mother, McSweeney uses Bible verses, poetry written by herself and her mother Carolyn Rhea, and personal stories to lead readers through the “stages” of grief to grace.  Ending each section is an exercise in “chronicling”, a spot to consider what to say to God and discover how you are feeling at that time.
I’ve always respected - and been impressed by a grandparent’s words of wisdom.  In the book, Grandpa Turnage’s journal lines, written so many years ago, startled me into reevaluating how “Christian” or spiritual my home is.  Turnage suggests that a lack of religious presence in the home may be the root of trouble in marriage and with children’s behavior.  I also liked her family’s talk of finding a “raw edge” – just the tip of a great need.  That would be a place to make a simple start for helping and serving…and healing.
My mom died young.  A stronger faith might have helped me to be at peace with her absence sooner.  But, too much spiritual talk made me uncomfortable when I was young – sometimes it still does.  As a teen, this book may not have helped me, but I feel certain that Aftermath might help grieving adults to grow in faith and find serenity.

Outpost by Ann Aguirre

Deuce’s whole world has changed. Down below, she was considered an adult. Now, topside in a town called Salvation, she’s a brat in need of training in the eyes of the townsfolk. She doesn’t fit in with the other girls: Deuce only knows how to fight.
To make matters worse, her Hunter partner, Fade, keeps Deuce at a distance. Her feelings for Fade haven’t changed, but he seems not to want her around anymore. Confused and lonely, she starts looking for a way out.
Deuce signs up to serve in the summer patrols—those who make sure the planters can work the fields without danger. It should be routine, but things have been changing on the surface, just as they did below ground. The Freaks have grown smarter. They’re watching. Waiting. Planning. The monsters don’t intend to let Salvation survive, and it may take a girl like Deuce to turn back the tide.

Goodreads Summary

This is the second book of the Razorland series.  As with the first book of the series, Enclave, I had a hard time liking the main character, Deuce.  She has a superiority complex and is crushing on a rapist who is ironically named Stalker.  WHAT IS UP WITH THAT?!  I just will never understand how Aguirre can have him as a love interest.  Deuce looks down on the townspeople, as well.  It is hard to like her, but after Stalker, I now cannot respect her at all.
In this book, Deuce is having a hard time getting used to her new town.  She is now expected to become a stereotypical girl.  In addition to this, Fade is ignoring her.  Eventually, Deuce, Fade, and Stalker go to guard the fields of the community.  This is where the story becomes interesting…The reader learns a lot about the characters and I like the twists and turns of the plot.
There are a lot of revelations in this book.  Some I expected, but some took me completely by surprise.  I do really like Aguirre’s writing, but I might not read the last book.  I cannot stand Stalker.  Even though I complained a lot in this review, the book really is pretty good.  I give it 3 ½ stars out of 5.  Aguirre is a good writer, she just needs to clean up her characters.

Over The Edge by Mary Connealy

Tuesday, August 21, 2012

Bestselling Author Mary Connealy Delivers Her Trademark Historical Romantic Comedy
Seth Kincaid survived a fire in a cave, but he's never been the same. He was always a reckless youth, but now he's gone over the edge. He ran off to the Civil War and came back crazier than ever.
After the war, nearly dead from his injuries, it appears Seth got married. Oh, he's got a lot of excuses, but his wife isn't happy to find out Seth doesn't remember her. Callie has searched, prayed, and worried. Now she's come to the Kincaid family's ranch in Colorado to find her lost husband.
Callie isn't a long-suffering woman. Once she knows her husband is alive, she wants to kill him. She's not even close to forgiving him for abandoning her.
Then more trouble shows up in the form of a secret Seth's pa kept for years. The Kincaid brothers might lose their ranch if they can't sort things out. It's enough to drive a man insane--but somehow it's all making Seth see things more clearly. And now that he knows what he wants, no one better stand in his way.

Goodreads Summary

If readers are looking for a female character with spunk they need not look any further.  Callie is one tough cookie.  She survives the Civil War and her husband's odd disappearance and will not be broken by her husband's, Seth's, inability to remember her.  Does Seth have an excuse for this abandonment?  Well, he has excuses in the form of injuries.  Seth has some internal/mental problems that must be dealt with before Callie can take on her threat of shooting him for leaving her.  Can the two come to some resolution?

Callie's character was fun and easy to love.  She shows bravery in a time where women were not known for being outspoken.  Seth's character was slightly more complicated.  He was a little harder to get to know, but the reader will likely come to appreciate him.  The other characters fit perfectly into the novel's plot and often bring about surprises that will keep the reader avidly turning the pages.

The plot itself was easy to follow and character-driven.  The events are fast-paced for the most part and the author has a keen eye for detail, allowing the reader to picture the setting.  Overall, this book is recommended to adult readers.

And When She Was Good by Laura Lippman

Sunday, August 19, 2012

"Laura Lippman's stories aren't just mysteries; they are deeply moving explorations of the human heart. She is quite simply one of the best crime novelists writing today."
--Tess Gerritsen, author of The Mephisto Club
Already praised as "a writing powerhouse" (USA Today) and "among the select group of novelists who have invigorated the crime fiction arena with smart, innovative, and exciting work" (George Pelecanos), New York Times bestseller Laura Lippman is constantly sending reviewers back to their thesauruses in search of new and greater accolades. Her brilliant stand-alone novel, And When She Was Good, only reinforces the fact that she stands tall among today's bestselling elite--including Kate Atkinson, Tana French, Jodi Picoult, and Harlan Coben (who raves, "I love her books ") Based on her acclaimed, multi-award-nominated short story Scratch a Woman, And When She Was Good is the powerfully gripping, intensely emotional story of a suburban madam, a convicted murderer whose sentence is about to be overturned, and the child they will both do anything to keep. Lippman has already won virtually every prize the mystery genre has to offer--the Edgar(R), Anthony, Agatha, and Nero Wolfe Awards, to name but a few. They'll now have to invent a few new awards just to keep up with her.
Goodreads Summary

Heloise has had a difficult past.  Emotionally abused as a child, Heloise has used some of this abuse as a way to make herself stronger and to build up her "professional" life later on.  While she appears to have a regular job and manages to be a wonderful mother, Heloise is working both by day and night.  She is now a Madam and somewhat in control of her own situation.  Unfortunately, outside forces will decide her fate if she doesn't figure out the mystery fast.

Heloise's character was nice enough, but hard to connect with in some ways.  She is a good mother, caring for her child above all, but her disregard for some of the other characters casts aspersions on her own character.  The reader will feel bad for her, her past makes her sympathetic.  The other characters range from irredeemable to integral to the story.  Val Deluca, a pimp and someone connected to Heloise via her child, is truly evil.  He doesn't care for anyone except himself and disposes of those who displease him.  Luckily, Val is locked in jail, though that doesn't stop Heloise from visiting him.  Will Heloise ever move on and will Val's mysterious hold on her be explained?

Overall, this book was a suspenseful read.  Every piece of the story is of some importance, the author doesn't just throw down random information or characters.  The world of prostitutes and madams is an interesting one, the reader will be able to tell the author did her research.  The characters have depth, even though Heloise is hard to warm up to, the reader will still care about her.  This book is recommended to adult readers.

_________________________________________________
In the Midwestern suburb of LaGrange, something is amiss. Over a twenty-four-hour period, all the children under the age of thirteen along with many adults have disappeared without explanation. It doesn’t take long for those left behind to learn that this tragedy is part of a global event. As people panic, civilization begins to crumble. Luckily, the Secretary of Homeland Security, Daniel Grimshaw, has a plan to restore order. But first, every remaining person must be accounted for and tagged with a mark on their right hand.
Unaware of his responsibilities, seventeen-year-old Micah has been preparing for this day. His mother trained him and provided him with the proper tools, but she neglected to tell Micah about the family legacy, his legacy. Now that his mother is among the missing, will Micah ever discover who he is, or what he needs to do to save what’s left of humanity from the hellfire of perdition?
Vestige is the first book in a two book series.

Goodreads Summary

Vestige is one of those books that you want to stop reading, but can’t.  Hanrahan’s novel tells the story of Micah and Clarke.  Neither Micah nor Clarke have had easy lives.  Micach’s family raised him to always be ready for an apocalypse and Clarke’s mother abandoned her and her father after learning that he had multiple sclerosis.
The two come together after they realize that they have been left behind.  One morning they wake up to find that everyone under the age of thirteen is gone along with the rest of the “good” people on Earth.  Those people remaining are in danger, but they do not realize it.  The apocalypse is happening and only one person can save them, Micah.
I am not going to lie, Vestige freaked me out.  The book draws you in and makes you think.  The plot is filled with suspense and mystery, the reader will get the chills more than once. The scenario described, all the children on the planet missing and many adults and teenagers with them, is terrifying.  Clarke and Micah are excellent characters, the reader is sure to grow attached.  Both have faults and good points; they make a great pair.  Hanrahan had me staying up late to finish this book and I cannot wait to read the next book!  Anyone could read this book and love it.

The Unnaturalists by Tiffany Trent

Saturday, August 18, 2012

In an alternate London where magical creatures are preserved in a museum, two teens find themselves caught in a web of intrigue, deception, and danger.

Vespa Nyx wants nothing more than to spend the rest of her life cataloging Unnatural creatures in her father’s museum, but as she gets older, the requirement to become a lady and find a husband is looming large. Syrus Reed’s Tinker family has always served and revered the Unnaturals from afar, but when his family is captured to be refinery slaves, he finds that his fate may be bound up with Vespa’s—and with the Unnaturals.

As the danger grows, Vespa and Syrus find themselves in a tightening web of deception and intrigue. At stake may be the fate of New London—and the world.

Goodreads Summary

What would you do in a world where magic was evil and science mandatory, the only logical explanation? Would you still believe? Vespa doesn't want to mold herself to the role expected of her, but having to find a husband and settle down is looming ever near. Those readers expecting romance in this story may be disappointed, however, as Vespa does not focus much on romance at all. The world the author created is richly detailed. The reader will learn of Pedants and Unnaturalists, of worshipped scientists and hated supporters of magic. The first in a series, this book lays the ground work for more books to come and leaves a few questions unanswered to draw readers in.

The story has alternating view points. Vespa's character is easy to like. She strives to become someone she can respect and is determined to become a Pedant. Syrus provides both comic relief and some explanations for the reader. The world seen through his eyes is informative. It is interesting to see how Syrus and Vespa's decisions affect each other and how their fates really do seem to be intertwined. The other characters are interesting and add to the plot point, but are not as memorable. The plot may sound familiar, but the author puts a new twist that will make for a quick read. Overall, this book is recommended to young adult/teen readers.

The Stars Shine Bright by Sibella Giorello

Friday, August 17, 2012
After the FBI suspends her for bending its rules, Special Agent Raleigh Harmon is looking for a chance to redeem her career and re-start her life.

Sent undercover to a thoroughbred horse track, Raleigh takes on a double life to find out who's fixing the races. But when horses start dying and then her own life is threatened, Raleigh realizes something bigger-and more sinister-is ruining Emerald Downs.

Yet she's never felt more alone.

Her one contact with the FBI is Special Agent Jack Stephanson, a guy who seems to jump from antagonistic to genuine friend depending on the time of day. And she can't turn to her family for support. They're off-limits while she's undercover, and her mother isn't speaking to her anyway, having been confined to a mental hospital following a psychotic breakdown. Adding insult to her isolation, Raleigh's fiance wants them to begin their life together-now-precisely when she's been ordered not to be herself.

With just days left before the season ends, Raleigh races to stop the killing and find out who's behind the track's trouble, all the while trying to determine if Jack is friend or foe, and whether marrying her fiance will make things better-or worse.

Raleigh is walking through the darkest night she's faced, searching for a place where the stars shine bright.

Goodreads Summary

The Stars Shine Bright is a great Christian fiction/ mystery novel. Although it is the fifth book of a series, I immediately was engaged by Sibella Giorello’s ability to make the reader care about the characters. Raleigh Harmon is an FBI agent in a bit of trouble. She is being kept on a short leash because of past conduct, but has now been given an unorthodox, but tough case. Harmon has to discern who is fixing horse races and must work on a tight timetable. This case is not easy and quickly becomes dangerous as the story unfolds. There is personal drama happening in her life as well, involving Raleigh’s fiancé, colleague, and mother. Raleigh’s fiancé wants to further their relationship, but Harmon cannot help but be drawn to Jack Stephanson, her coworker. In addition, Raleigh’s mother is very ill. Harmon must have faith and use everything within her to survive and solve this case.
Giorello created great characters. Each is interesting and has a strong personality. I truly admire Raleigh and wish there were more characters like her out there. Raleigh is a joy to read about. Sibella Giorello has become one of my favorite authors and I cannot wait to read her other books. Anyone could enjoy this novel whether or not they are Christian. Religion is definitely a part of the story, but The Stars Shine Bright is not overly filled with references to faith.

Tidewater Inn (Hope Beach, #1) by Colleen Coble

Thursday, August 16, 2012

Inheriting a beautiful old hotel on the seaward shore of Hope Island could be a dream come true for Libby. The inn cries out for her restorer's talent and love of history. She's delighted to learn of family she never knew she had. And the handsome Coast Guard lieutenant she's met there on the island could definitely be the man of her dreams.
But Libby soon realizes that only way she can afford the upkeep on the inn is to sell it to developers who are stalking the island. The father who willed her the inn has died before she could meet him, and her newfound brothers and sisters are convinced she's there to steal their birthright. Worst of all, her best friend and business partner has been kidnapped before her eyes, Libby's under suspicion for the crime, and her handsome lieutenant clearly doubts her innocence.
Libby's dream-come-true is becoming a nightmare. Can she find her friend and establish her innocence? Must she sell Tidewater Inn and lose her family again? Or can she find a home for her heart on the beautiful shores of Hope Island?

Goodreads Summary

Libby Holladay has turned her love of history and architecture into a business with her friend Nicole Ingram.  A restoration job on the Outer Banks of North Carolina leads Libby to find that she had a father and has a family that she never knew existed there.  When Nicole is kidnapped from Hope Island, Libby arrives to learn about her father, to meet a brother and sister who resent her presence, and to find herself attracted to a local Coast Guard officer.  The local law is suspicious that Libby is responsible for Nicole’s disappearance.
This is exciting right from the beginning!  Nicole calls Libby to tell her about finding Libby’s father’s family and the family’s historic hotel on Hope Island.  When two men grab Nicole from a lonely beach, Libby is watching on her laptop.  Libby’s father’s second wife disappeared mysteriously a few years before; a secret drawer in a jewelry box holds some romantic letters from someone other than her husband.  Libby’s inheritance includes an old lighthouse and cave – around which tales of Edward Teach circulate.  Alec and Libby are drawn to one another despite his wariness – wondering if Libby might be responsible for her partner’s kidnapping.  Throughout the story, the kindnesses that her father extended to many of the islanders and his family inspire Libby to let WWJD guide her actions.  Her father’s faith, her own desire to do the right thing, and Alec’s faith lead her to a more prayerful life.  Libby’s love of old architecture and beautiful old wood might make you look more appreciatively at older homes in your town.
When I was recently browsing through a book store, my friend and I saw Tidewater Inn on the shelf.  I didn’t realize how much was going on in this mystery until I enthusiastically gave a summary and recommended it to my friend.

Shards of History Guest Post!

I enjoy hearing about other people's writing processes. Everybody is so different, ranging from those who write by the seat of their pants with only the faintest idea of where the story is going, to those who outline ahead of time and have pages upon pages of notes before they ever set the first sentence down on paper. There is no single right or wrong way, just the way that works best for any individual. It's a process, figuring out which method works best. I've tried several methods in pinning down what works best for me, and I'm actually still trying to figure it out.

My novel Shards of History began as a short story. When I decided to lengthen it, I had only the faintest idea of how it would end and what would happen in the middle. I just sat down one day and started writing. That wasn't the best idea I've ever had.
I finished a rough draft and submitted the first few chapters for critique. They were the strongest chapters of the entire novel, but even then they needed clarity. My biggest problem was that I hadn't yet put enough time into thinking about the world that my characters lived in, and my readers, smart as they are, picked up on that. So I spent a lot of time asking questions and researching. I used the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America's handy dandy list of world-building questions as a guide. You can find it at http://www.sfwa.org/2009/08/fantasy-worldbuilding-questions/ if you're interested. I made other changes in the revision and then submitted it to readers again.
This time they brought up good points that meant revising in some places and totally rewriting in others. I knew they made valid points and that the story would be stronger, but the thought of overhauling the story made me want to weep. And I had a timeline in which I wanted to finish the novel and start sending it out. I'd just found out I was pregnant, and I wanted to be done with the final draft, with a query letter and synopsis ready, by the time the kiddo came along. Cue the ticking clock!

I was all set to work on revisions right away, but then the mixed blessing of morning sickness hit. I don't know why they call it morning sickness, by the way. I was sick all the time. At any rate, I didn't feel like doing anything that first trimester other than lying on the couch, cuddled up with the cat, and feeling sorry for myself while occasionally reaching for a cracker or ginger ale or making a mad dash to worship the porcelain gods. I was dying to work on the novel, but I barely felt like dragging myself out of bed every morning. Still, I had plenty of time to think about the novel and the suggestions that my readers made, and I grudgingly came to accept the changes that had to be made.
So yes, I should cut all the scenes from the smarmy husband's point of view because they didn't add anything. And I should add a scene from this other character's point of view because he's pretty cool and he does have something better to contribute. And I should really write an entirely new opening chapter to introduce the conflict. And I should stop fighting myself over the love interest and let the main character admit her feelings to herself. And, and, and. I reluctantly realized, over the course of six weeks of constant nausea, that I could and would make the necessary changes. So when I could finally sit at my desk like a normal human being, I began working on the novel. I cut here and added there.

What I learned was that sometimes you just have to let the material sit a while. It's good to have some distance from your work and let critiques and suggestions simmer in the back of your mind so that you're prepared to make major changes when necessary.

When A Woman You Love Was Abused: A Husband's Guide to Helping Her Overcome Childhood Sexual Molestation by Dawn Scott Jones

Tuesday, August 14, 2012
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reports that 80 percent of childhood abuse victims later suffer from at least one abuse-induced psychological disorder. It’s proven that the effects of childhood abuse follow women into adulthood. Yet few men are prepared to deal with those effects, even when their own wife is the one who is suffering. And their wife’s suffering becomes their own suffering as their needs aren’t being met by a wife who is powerless to control her inner turmoil.

Goodreads Summary

Trying to reach out to the husbands of abused women, the author draws on her own experiences and those of women she’s counseled.  Of course, their wives will also benefit from reading about others like them and about how they may be trying to heal.  The book is divided into sections which focus on the emotions, loneliness, and depression that survivors of sexual abuse feel, on the healing process, and on how husbands can help.  I’ve never experienced abuse myself, but Scott Jones’ writing and advice seemed intuitive and balanced.  As early as page 12, she cautions husbands that the journey will be exhausting and daunting.  The author warns them that their struggling wives will turn to them…but might also turn on them.
The experiences, the coping skills, the suppression of feelings, the memories and triggers… - there are so many aspects surrounding the consequences of the cruel crime that these women suffered through; Scott Jones discusses them all.  I had to read and skim the chapter dealing with forgiveness a few times.  It’s so incomprehensible to me that the victimizer should ever be forgiven.  Yet, this is a step toward healing.  Even God must be forgiven, and Bible quotes are used to illustrate the precedent for having the capacity to forgive such an evil.  The book is well-written, heartfelt advice; however, even with excellent guidance, I wonder if many men would be able to support and break through the lack of trust and the hurt these women must feel.  I hope so.

The Reckoning: Book Two of the Taker Trilogy by Alma Katsu

A love triangle spanning 200 years…Alma Katsu takes readers on a breathtaking journey through the landscape of the heart.New York Times bestselling author Scott Westerfeld (Leviathan) praises Alma Katsu’s The Taker as, “a centuries-spanning epic that will keep you turning pages all night. This marvelous debut is a thinking person’s guilty pleasure.” And Keith Donohue (The Stolen Child) says, “The Taker is a frighteningly compelling story about those most human monsters—desire and obsession. It will curl your hair and keep you up late at night.”

Now Alma Katsu delivers the highly anticipated follow-up to her haunting novel about an immortal woman learning firsthand that the heart wants what the heart wants…no matter how high the stakes. Fans of The Taker can finally indulge in their next juicy fix with the second book of the trilogy, The Reckoning. In this gripping, pulse-pounding supernatural sequel, discover what happens to Lanny, Luke, Adair—and Jonathan. The Reckoning picks up where The Taker leaves off, following Lanny on her path to redemption—and creating a whole new level of suspense.

Goodreads Summary

Lanore immediately pulled me into her struggle.  One might not even need to read the first book, I was never lost or confused while reading The Reckoning, which is the second book of a trilogy about immortals.  Lanny successfully saved her first love, Jonathan, by trapping Adair, her master, behind a wall made of stone, lumber, concrete, and brick.  Jonathan abandons Lanore, however, and she must learn to live without him and move on with her life with Luke.  After she and Luke donate dozens of items she’s accumulated over her long life to museums all over the world, Lanny feels Adair’s presence.  He survived his entombment and is now free to hunt and kill her for her betrayal.  Fearing for Luke’s safety, Lanore forces herself to leave him and reaches the decision that she must face Adair alone.
Katsu is an excellent writer and I can’t wait to read the other book of this trilogy.  There are layers to every character and motivations behind their actions.  Katsu switches between many character’s points of views in her writing.  I love that she does this because it adds so much to the story!  The Reckoning is a book that any woman would love to read.  Lanny’s struggles to find and protect love are easy to relate to.  Although Lanore has lived for a very long time, she is still very vulnerable and unsure of herself in many ways.

Sparkle by Denene Millner

THEY HAD A DREAM. SHE HAD IT ALL. Detroit, 1968. The Motown sound is sweeping the nation. Girl groups are hotter than ever. Over their mother’s objections, three beautiful sisters—Delores, Sister and Sparkle—are taking the local music scene by storm. But their dreams are bigger than Detroit. Their manager, Stix, is just as ambitious and will do whatever it takes to make it to the big time, even if it means using the girls—and his love for Sparkle—as the foundation of a new musical empire.
Behind the music and lights, the recording industry is a ruthless and unforgiving place, just as Mama had warned her girls. Sister, with her good looks and voice, is the natural headliner of the trio, yet her complicated personal life threatens to overshadow her talent; Delores has her sights set on a different kind of life outside the spotlight; and young Sparkle must push past her deepest fears if she is to fulfill her destiny—does she really have what it takes to go all the way?
Riveting and soul-stirring, this timeless tale reminds us of the unbreakable bonds between family, the high price of fame and what can happen when we dare to show the world how brightly we can sparkle.

Goodreads Summary

Although I have not yet seen the movie, the novel, Sparkle, has made me want to.  I love the story, characters, and back-and-forth dialogue.  Millner did a great job describing the events of the book; it was easy to imagine the scenes taking place.  I loved the humor and speech patterns of the characters.  Everyone was quick-witted and funny.  If the book was this good, the movie and music must be fantastic.
Three sisters begin singing together and after winning a contest in 1960s Detroit, their talent quickly takes over the city.  Romance, abuse, and drugs are the problems that threaten their rise to the top.  Sister becomes engaged to an abusive man and takes up cocaine, Sparkle has to move past her nerves and embrace her talent, and Delores merely wants to help her sisters’ rise to the top and earn enough money to fund her education.  All this drama takes place in the midst of the Civil Rights movement.
Millner’s novel is excellent and anyone would enjoy reading it.  The book is fast-paced and never lost my attention.  I give this novel four out of five stars.
