Greek Gods #Squadgoals by Courtney Carbone

Tuesday, November 14, 2017

OMG Classics, the greatest stories ever told . . . in texts. Imagine: What if Mount Olympus got WiFi and the gods and goddesses had smartphones? The classic Greek myths get new life in irreverent and hilarious texts and posts!
Zeus, a king of the gods always in search of a new bae.
A squad of goddesses who can't resist stirring the pot.
And the selfie-obsessed heroes out for all the likes.
If you have trouble telling Perseus from Theseus (#Greek2Me) or have ever wondered about Oedipus's tragic dating profile or why Medusa's Instagram never got traction--this satirical book of Greek myths retold for the Internet age is for you!
tl;dr D'Aulaires' and Homer's Greek myths told through characters texting with emojis, posting photos, checking in at locations, and updating their relationship statuses. The perfect gift for any reader--young or old--with a sense of humor!
A glossary and cast of characters are included for those who need it. For example: tl;dr means too long; didn't read.

Goodreads Summary

With the Holidays coming up this is the perfect book to get your pre-teen/youth! This book is one of several in a series that condenses classics into easily understood concepts. Most younger readers will understand this novel's unique format, but for adult or older readers the book comes with a glossary of terms detailing "text speak." I enjoyed reading this book despite not being the intended reading level. I think that adult readers can enjoy this book just as much as teens/youths. The author painted a vivid picture of the "messes" that the Greek Gods and Goddesses both created and physically were. Each page was fun and enticing to read. There was a constant humorous undertone consisting of both sarcasm and a little dark humor. The emoticons added another fun layer to an already unforgettable book. I already read the other novels in this series, but I highly recommend to the reader that he/she go back and pick up the other books.

Rosemarked by Livia Blackburne: Promo and Giveaway!

Tuesday, November 7, 2017

Hi Everyone!

This is Livia Blackburne, and I'm thrilled to share ROSEMARKED with you at long last. There are a lot of elements to this book, including a love story, a spy story, reflections on trauma and mortality, medical ethics, and political intrigue.  Perhaps because of this, my research for the book was equally eclectic, from archery and stick fighting lessons, to chats with memory researchers and soldiers, and lots and lots of reading, including books about leper colonies, hospice care, and PTSD. Hopefully, I wove it all into an entertaining and thought-provoking story!

This story centers on Zivah, a talented healer with an incurable illness, and Dineas, a traumatized soldier. The two couldn't be more different, and I had a lot of fun writing their unlikely love story.  In order to work together, they both have to let go of their own prejudices and preconceptions. It's a painful process, with fights and misunderstandings, anger, laughter and tears, but in the end, they both come out as stronger people.

To celebrate the ROSEMARKED release, I’m offering 3 lucky winners a ROSEMARKED swag pack, which includes a copy of ROSEMARKED and a signed bookplate! Due to sweepstakes laws, entrants must be 18 years or older to participate. Best of luck, and happy reading!

Captain Hotness by Weston Parker: Release Blitz

Saturday, October 21, 2017

Synopsis:

I’m a single father. A widower. A Firefighter.
That means I’m trained to find danger in every situation.
So how did I not see Bailey coming? She’s the spark that starts an inferno. She’s the fuel for the passion in my heart. She’s been nothing more than a friend since we were kids, but fuck me, she’s all grown up now. It’s her that I go to for comic relief after a million blind-dates, each more ridiculous than the last. And then, without any warning, like a backdraft that kills everyone in its path, she swept me right off my feet.
Now I need her the way flames need oxygen. With a passion that leaves me aching and hard as shit.
But will I be able to convince her I’ve changed?
That I’m not the player she thinks I am, but the man I know she wants me to be? Fuck if I know, but I gotta try with everything inside of me. My best friend’s little sister is in for one hell of a love story.
It goes something like this… I’m her man, and my heart is all hers. And her body is all mine. Cause with her? I don’t put out fires. I start them.

Haunting the Deep by Adriana Mather

Tuesday, October 17, 2017

The Titanic meets the delicious horror of Ransom Riggs and the sass of Mean Girls in this follow-up to the #1 New York Times bestseller How to Hang a Witch, in which a contemporary teen finds herself a passenger on the famous “ship of dreams”—a story made all the more fascinating because the author’s own relatives survived the doomed voyage.

Samantha Mather knew her family’s connection to the infamous Salem Witch Trials might pose obstacles to an active social life. But having survived one curse, she never thought she’d find herself at the center of a new one.

This time, Sam is having recurring dreams about the Titanic . . . where she’s been walking the deck with first-class passengers, like her aunt and uncle. Meanwhile, in Sam’s waking life, strange missives from the Titanic have been finding their way to her, along with haunting visions of people who went down with the ship.

Ultimately, Sam and the Descendants, along with some help from heartthrob Elijah, must unravel who is behind the spell that is drawing her ever further into the dream ship . . . and closer to sharing the same grim fate as its ghostly passengers.

Goodreads Summary

I loved the first book in this series so I couldn't wait to read this one! Samantha is such a dynamic character; I love that the author incorporates her own family's past into some of the plot. When she starts dreaming of the Titanic and its passengers she knows that there is some purpose to her visions. The author weaves a delicate setting of the Titanic that is both detailed and extremely enticing. As a child, I loved learning about ocean liners and focused on the Titanic and her sister ship particularly. I could tell the author did not just slap this book together, but that she spent time developing the plot and setting.

Samantha is witty and sarcastic; as the main character, she really held my attention. I'm not the biggest fan of pseudo love triangles, but I liked how it played out in the end. I don't think Samantha needed another distraction, but who turns down a cute boy, right? I did find the her attitude a little annoying, in parts; girls at this age can be snobby and both Samantha and some secondary characters displayed that lovely quality. The ending was a little predictable, but still enjoyable.

Rhennan is next in line to be Oracle, the one chosen by the Creator to guard the secret of Heaven – The Tree of Life. Rhen's grandmother, the current Oracle, fails to pass along the knowledge of Rhen’s destiny, and when strange things start happening, Rhen believes she is going crazy. Coming into her powers before her time, Rhen sees things she shouldn’t. Her parents are keeping secrets from her, and that only adds to the stress she feels about her sanity.

Maddox Bell is the new guy at school. When the tall, good-looking bad-boy shows up in his leather jacket and moto boots, all it takes is one look into his sapphire eyes, and he makes Rhen forget about her ex-boyfriend - the one who broke her heart. He also makes her forget to study, and with only three months left in the school year, Rhen is torn between keeping her perfect grade point average and spending time with the man who has his own secrets. As Maddox and Rhen become closer, things get stranger, threatening to rip them apart.

When Rhen makes one desperately wrong decision, her life and that of her family, is irrevocably changed forever.  “If this was Hell, the Christians on Earth were going to be pissed.”

Chapter One

Have you ever had a possum walk across your grave? You know that feeling that starts at your nape and snakes its way down your spine while the hair on your arms stands on end? Your whole body shivers while you look around for the boogeyman, but you can’t see anything. I was sitting in first period when it happened to me.

Again.

It didn’t take long to figure out the cause. Our classroom door opened, and in walked the most beautiful man I had ever seen. And when I say man, I mean this guy had to be a substitute teacher or someone’s older brother, because there was no way he was young enough to be a student. Long black hair brushed his shoulders which were encased in a well-worn leather jacket. Faded jeans led to a pair of black moto boots. His most striking feature, from the quick perusal I had given him, was his eyes. They were a deep sapphire. I know this because I sat close to the front of the room.

And he was staring straight at me.

That might not have been so odd if I were Brittany or Kinsley, the prettiest girls in our class. But I wasn’t. I was plain Rhennan Ward. For whatever reason, none of the other kids were paying any attention to him. I turned my head toward my best friend. Surely Jenna would be staring at him too. She wasn’t. What the heck was going on? Was I the only one who could see how gorgeous this man was? When I turned back around, Mr. Blue Eyes was headed toward me. I lowered my chin to my chest and averted my gaze until he stopped and took the only vacant seat in the classroom, which happened to be right next to mine. Great.

“Class, I would like for you to welcome Maddox Bell. He comes to us from…” Mrs. Bain looked back down at the piece of paper she was holding and frowned. “Anyway, say hello to Maddox.”

Maddox. Of course he would have a cool name. Not Bill or Ted, but I had no doubt this guy had plenty of excellent adventures. His name matched his swagger, and I still didn’t believe he wasn’t older than the rest of us. Half the class muttered hello while the other half continued to ignore the new guy the way they usually did.

Maddox Bell wasn’t just another guy. Something about him was different. My skin was still itching from the way he had looked right at me. Maybe he was an undercover cop. It’s not like our school was exempt from kids selling drugs or teens running away. Northfield was your average public high school. But that wouldn’t explain why he had singled me out. I was pretty boring for the most part. No boyfriend. Highest grade point average out of over three hundred seniors. My social life consisted of going for coffee drinks after school with my best friend and hanging out with my little sister. See? Boring.

I wanted so badly to turn and stare at him to make sure I hadn’t been wrong about his looks or his age. Maybe he was so good-looking the others couldn’t look his way, like he was an Angel or something. Now you’re being ridiculous. My thoughts had been off-kilter lately, so thinking Maddox Bell was an Angel wasn’t out of the norm.

“Rhennan, if you would share your book with Mr. Bell until we can find him one, I would appreciate it,” Mrs. Bain announced. Maddox didn’t hesitate to scoot his desk closer to mine, sliding his arm along the back of my chair and leaning toward me. How did he know I was Rhennan? I turned my head to ask him that, but the words died in my throat. Either I was going crazy, or the pupils of his eyes were slitted like a snake’s. He blinked, and they were back to the same deep blue that had pierced me moments before. Yep. Going crazy.

I swallowed hard as I pushed my chemistry book over so it was half on my desk and half on his. After that, I kept my eyes down and off Maddox Bell. More than once his breath ghosted across my neck and cheek as he leaned closer, but I locked down the urge to face him. His scent alone – a mixture of leather and smoke – was doing crazy things to my brain.  None of the other boys in our school smelled this good, not that I went around sniffing them. Then again, none of the other boys looked this good, and they sure didn’t make me see things that weren’t there.

For the last two weeks, ever since my eighteenth birthday, my life had gone from normal to anything but. Before the tenth, or BTT as I liked to call it, I was just a regular girl who made good grades and spent time with her little sister and her best friend. I didn’t dream at night, or if I did, I didn’t remember them. Now, not only was I having vivid dreams – most of which were nightmares – but I was remembering every little detail in Technicolor. During the day, I had started having flashes of someone or something in my peripheral vision, but when I turned to look, there was nothing there. I had the feeling of being followed. Watched.

I had read articles in various magazines about trusting your instincts. How your gut feeling was the universe’s way of cluing you in on what was happening around you. My instincts had been on high alert ever since my birthday. I wish my instincts would chill out, because they had me on edge, and I couldn’t afford that. Not with only three months left until I graduated.

It was a good thing I was a straight-A student, because I had no idea what Mrs. Bain said for the next forty-five minutes. Dizziness danced around me, and it took every ounce of willpower I had not to run from the room. When the bell rang, I grabbed my book and slammed it shut a little harder than necessary; but in my defense, my brain wasn’t functioning properly, and I blamed that on Maddox. Instead of going to my locker, I waited outside the classroom for Jenna, and as soon as she cleared the door, I grabbed her sleeve and pulled her farther down the hall. “Did you see him?” I gushed.

“That Maddox kid? Yeah, why?” she asked nonchalantly, like he wasn’t some kind of god in black leather.

I looked around to make sure nobody was listening, and said, “You’re kidding, right? There’s no way he’s eighteen.”

Exclusive Excerpt!

When Rain turned back to Freddie, he bit down a gasp of surprise. She’d stripped off her shirt and tipped her face to the moon, eyes closed, like one would do to the sun at the beach. And here he’d thought the landscape was the most beautiful thing he’d ever seen.

The air was still. Eerily still, and her smooth skin appeared to glow from inside in the moonlight—her black lace bra sheer enough to make him a little dizzy.

Without opening her eyes, she said, “Take off your shirt.”

No way in hell was he going to argue with that. He yanked off his shirt, clutching it in his fist, waiting for his next instruction.

He forgot how to breathe when she opened her pale eyes and moved toward him. Her gaze wasn’t focused on his face, though. It was on his chest. Stopping in front of him, she traced her fingers over the ink.

“Raindrops?” she asked, finger outlining one of the shapes.

“Tears,” he replied, again light-headed as she ran her fingertips over his pec.

“For your mom?”

“No. For all of us.”

She stepped back and, for a long time, stared at the tattoo comprised of dozens of drops in a random pattern over his chest, spilling down his ribs.

She traced a scar on his side with the tip of her finger. One of many marring his body from fights. “Your life has been sad.”

And so had hers recently. Maybe that was why he felt so connected to her. Their shared grief, their shared stand against a harsh, unfeeling, screwed-up world. Their shared solitude.

She turned back to the moon and raised her arms. “Do you feel it?”

Well, that was a wide-open question. He was feeling lots of things.

“The moon,” she said. “It’s like aloe when you’re sunburned. Try it.”

He imitated her posture, head back, arms out, but felt nothing other than the throbbing hardness he always felt around her.

“So, what do you think about that legend your aunt told you?” she asked.

He opened his eyes to find her studying him. “That the rock can turn men into beasts?” His mind raced, wondering what would prompt that question and what answer she was looking for. Men were beasts. Horrible monsters at times. He’d seen it firsthand. “I believe we all hide a beast inside. The only difference is what form it takes when freed.”

There it was again. That strange warm pull in his chest while she studied him. Like she totally got him—something no one else had ever bothered to do. He’d never been understood or accepted. People saw his size and found out his background and immediately wrote him off as dangerous or not worth the trouble. Not Freddie.

She obviously found his answer acceptable, because she wound her fingers in his hair and hauled him against her for another kiss. Raw, open-mouthed, and hungry. He’d never met anyone like this, who made him burn so hot he thought he might die from need. Recovering from surprise, he placed his hands on either side of her bare rib cage, feeling her body expand and contract with each quick breath. Bones and hard muscle working beneath smooth, soft skin. Skin he wanted to touch all over.

“I like you, Rain Ryland,” she said, dragging her nails down his back.

“Like” didn’t even come close. He was on fire for her. Had thought of her night and day since he first saw those eerily pale eyes and badass attitude. She was smart, strong, and terribly, terribly dangerous, which turned him on like crazy. “I like you, too.”

“How much?”

Something was going on here. Something other than foreplay. “More than I’ve ever liked anyone.” Which was true and unexpected. This was more than physical, which was a terrifying thought for him. Maybe this time he could stay. Maybe this time he’d actually found a home and wouldn’t have to leave everything behind.

He kissed her again, not wanting to think about legends, or leaving, or anything else for that matter. He wanted to just live in this moment as long as it lasted. Running his hands lower, his thumb brushed the unmistakable shape of a condom in her back pocket. He froze, and she smiled against his lips.

“You scared, Sprinkles?”

“Yes.”

“Of me?” It was like she wanted him to fear her.

“No.” He pulled back, amazed at how her eyes reflected the moon like clear glass. “Of this.” He gestured to the space he’d put between them. “Of whatever this is.” The intensity of it. The urgency. And worse, much worse—the potential loss of it. He’d never feared losing something before because he’d never had anything worth keeping. This girl, though. She was different. And he wanted her.
