Howl’s Moving Castle (No! Not the movie, the book!)

Saturday, March 31, 2012
In which a witch bewitched the hatter's daughter--and then some...
Sophie lived in the town of Market Chipping, which was in Ingary, a land in which anything could happen, and often did--especially when the Witch of the Waste got her dander up. Which was often.

As her younger sisters set out to seek their fortunes Sophie stayed in her father's hat shop. Which proved most unadventurous, until the Witch of the Waste came in to buy a bonnet, but was not pleased. Which is why she turned Sophie into an old lady. Which was spiteful witchery.

Now Sophie must seek her own fortune. Which means striking a bargain with the lecherous Wizard Howl. Which means entering his ever-moving castle, taming a blue fire-demon, and meeting the Witch of the Waste head-on. Which was more than Sophie bargained for...

Goodreads Summary

Sophie is the oldest sibling out of three girls, and seems to believe that working in her fathers’ hat shop is her destiny. On May Day she is courted by a handsome man, then later that night was turned into an old lady because the Witch of the Waste didn’t like her. She seeks out help to break a curse that cannot be spoken out loud. While trying to find help she follows a walking castle. Once inside, she meets a fire demon who promised to break her spell if she breaks his. Sophie later finds out it’s Howl’s domain, who was also the man that was courting her. She has heard many rumors about him, like eating girls hearts and souls. The book revolves around trying to break the fire demons spell as well as her own.

The movie Howl’s Moving Castle by Hayao Miyazaki was actually an adaptation of the book written by Diana Wynne Jones. This movie is definitely one of my favorites, but you’ve got to admit that it leaves you with many unanswered questions. It’s like some scenes are cut out and you’re left wondering, “why did that happen?”
The book is definitely different. You get to know the characters further and everything seems more logical. Sophies sisters – yes, she has two not one – play a more dominate role, and you get a background on Howls actions. The original black triangle actually takes you to England and Wales, not the uncles’ cabin, and Sophie is afraid of Turnip Head. These little differences make the book more fascinating than the movie (Sorry, Miyazaki!). Even if you didn’t like the movie, I recommend the book. It has adventure, romance, mystery, comedy, and drama.

This takes you on a whole new path and every question you’ve asked during the movie will be answered within a few hours of reading. There are two more books that follow up Howl’s Moving Castle, so the journey isn’t over.

Return of the White Deer by Robert Sells

Twelve year old Pen lived an idyllic life on a small farm in seventh century England. Frustrated with his father’s refusal to resist the outrages of tax collectors, Pen refused to be molded into a farmer; instead, he secretly learned how to wield a sword.  Shocked one evening when his weaponless father easily subdued an obnoxious soldier, Pen grappled with a new view about his father. Other mysteries swirl about the boy.  His best friend, the spunky and beautiful neighbor, Liana, disappeared for days at time with the other adult females of the village. Why and where? Pen’s sword master, Thatcher, was thought to be the best sword fighter in the country. Why was he wasting his talents in a backwater village? What exactly was going on inside Markwood forest, a forbidden area to all but the king and his henchmen? Why was the king suddenly interested in Pen? The greatest secret of all was one which Pen kept from everyone else… his short time with the mysterious White Deer.
Prompted by rumors that Pen might have been chosen to rule by the White Deer, the king kidnaps him. Pen’s enraged father reveals himself as the legendary Petronius, formerly the general of the army of Mercia. After freeing his son, Petronius takes him to Markwood forest where they are protected by the strange green men who rule the interior of Markwood. What started as a rescue mission changes into a rebellion. Liana and hundreds of blue-robed female archers join the cause. Thatcher adds a small army of former veterans.  Though frightened and confused about the drama swirling about him, Pen faces his fears and grudgingly accepts the weight of leadership. He leaves the relatively safe confines of Markwood to enlist the aid of a wild tribe of horsemen to help with the struggle.
Mercenaries from the king try to kill Pen. In the ensuing struggle, he is saved by his simple-minded servant, Songor.  Frustrated by his failure in dispatching the lad, the king marshals his considerable army to end the rebellion.  During the final battle, Pen watches helplessly as the king slays Songor. Enraged beyond both reason and fear, the young leader fights the king himself. Stronger and more experienced, the king is about to kill the lad when an arrow penetrates his armor and kills him. It is the same arrow the king lost years before while hunting the White Deer.
In the span of a few months, a boy has grown into a man.  The man reluctantly becomes king.

SYNOPSIS FOR THE RETURN OF THE WHITE DEER

Young Pen does not want to follow in his father's footsteps, he wants to try for something more in life. He starts with learning how to defend himself, slowly maturing from a child to a man.  It is difficult to sum up the book better than what is already mentioned in the summary without letting a few spoilers go, so this review will not focus too much on that.  The reader will enjoy getting to know and connect to Pen.  His character is easy to like, his characteristics are memorable.

Pen manages to remain comparatively normal regardless of the unusual circumstances he finds himself in.  For the most part, he comes off as a caring, intelligent, and brave character.  The other characters are fun to get to know, but Pen's character will be the one to draw the reader in.  The reader will travel with Pen; the book is almost inspirational with the message that sometimes, with enough effort, good may overcome evil.  It is exhilarating to believe that one may fight someone much stronger and more powerful and stand a fighting chance.  The significance of the white deer is clear throughout the novel, though not overstated.  The author writes with purpose, the book is well-written overall.  There are several twists that will keep the reader entertained and turning the next page.  This book is good for teen/middle grade readers.

They even care for the children in adulthood, assisting them to care facilities specialized to their individual needs.  The agency truly cares for its children and posts both child through adult pictures with pride on their site.  They have a variety of programs the children can take part in and enjoy.  To make a donate, go to this page

Here are a few services offered.

Residential Services
If you were to step inside a residence, you would see that people are enjoying life. Supported and guided by dedicated staff, each person we serve has opportunities to master the skills needed to become more independent. For some, mastery means learning to choose clothes, cut with a knife, or make a sandwich to take to Day Program. For others, mastery is more about learning how to make friends and join a local volunteer organization to get to know their neighbors. If life is about choices, then living at Mercy Home is all about choosing among healthy, life-giving and interesting activities.

Programs: What is Medicaid Service Coordination?

What is MSC?

Mercy Home has qualified Medicaid Service Coordinators available who would to like work with you and your family.

Who is eligible?

Any person diagnosed with a developmental disability, prior to age 21, as defined by the New York State OPWDD, and presently enrolled in Medicaid is eligible to apply.

Literally Dead Ebook Free!

book blurb:

In the midst of the Great Depression, one man must do battle against corruption with nothing but his wits and a host of great literary figures…

Amos Jansen is merely a clerk. He is not a crime fighter, the next great writer, or a man of privilege. He is the humble employee of a Chicago literary society. That is, until he is arrested for murder.

The scapegoat of a perfidious lieutenant, Jansen stands wrongly accused while his idols rally around him. Literary personalities the likes of Ernest Hemingway, Carl Sandburg, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Nelson Algren, and H.L. Mencken, as well as civil liberties war-horse Clarence Darrow, join Amos in his search for the real murderer of both the society's vice-chairman and his own father.

Will the pen prove mightier than the sword? Will mercenary police, politicians and money-barons meet with justice? Or will Jansen fail to solve the mystery and wind up literally dead?

The False Prince by Jennifer A Nielsen

This product or book may have been distributed for review, this in no way affects my opinions or reviews. The False Prince is the thrilling first book in a brand-new trilogy filled with danger and deceit and hidden identities that will have readers rushing breathlessly to the end.

In a discontent kingdom, civil war is brewing. To unify the divided people, Conner, a nobleman of the court, devises a cunning plan to find an impersonator of the king’s long-lost son and install him as a puppet prince. Four orphans are recruited to compete for the role, including a defiant boy named Sage. Sage knows that Conner’s motives are more than questionable, yet his life balances on a sword’s point—he must be chosen to play the prince or he will certainly be killed. But Sage’s rivals have their own agendas as well.

As Sage moves from a rundown orphanage to Conner’s sumptuous palace, layer upon layer of treachery and deceit unfold, until finally, a truth is revealed that, in the end, may very well prove more dangerous than all of the lies taken together.

An extraordinary adventure filled with danger and action, lies and deadly truths that will have readers clinging to the edge of their seats.

Goodreads Summary

Could you compete for the throne? Nobleman Conner creates a contest to find a puppet prince he can install on the throne of the kingdom. He chooses orphan boys and makes them compete for the position. Sage, the main character, is fifteen and brilliant. He is able to survive and uncover a long hidden truth. Reading about how Sage is able to untangle the lies that surround him is really fun. Relationships in the book are tense and stressed because of the competition. Often, a character must choose between his best interest and friendship. The characters are easy to grow attached to.  The plot of this book is original and the sequel promises to be exciting.
This book is a perfect for fans of fantasy of any age. The False Prince can be read by a young audience or adult readers. Nielsen’s writing is creative and paints a picture of the events in the reader’s head. Her talent is suited for the fantasy genre. Difficult to put down, this novel earns five out of five stars.

The Beautiful Wife by Sandy Ralya

The Beautiful Wife uses these inspiring stories along with biblical principles to guide and encourage any wife looking for God's best in her marriage. The Beautiful Wife answers serious questions women have about their roles as wives. Discussing everything from romance and money to beauty, communication, and sex, Sandy challenges women to open up and share their journeys so that together they can see God's plan for their marriages. "It is my passion to help women discover God's heart for their marriage, just as the other women helped me," writes Sandy. "When women share with each other the details of their journeys with God as wives, it's a beautiful thing indeed."

Goodreads Summary

The Beautiful Wife discusses topics such as self-care, romance, communication, truth in love, the roles of wife and mother, and choosing God’s best. The author recommends following the chapters, encouraging a small group of women who will support each other, and holding one another accountable for implementing the suggestions in the book. There are also companion books for the mentor of the small group and a prayer journal for each individual. In the journal, Bible passages for contemplation are suggested - as are prayers focusing on your husband and marriage.

Ralya’s marriage mentoring ministry would seem to be a terrific offering. I would have reservations about joining a small group and removing my “mask” as the author recommends. I think my friends like my “mask”. If I had many problems, my poor friends would probably feel helpless and embarrassed by my troubles.
However, Ralya’s insights seem to ring true. As she says, “Be direct.” Hints to my husband only frustrate good communication. Also, she suggests appreciating rather than criticizing. That realization early in my marriage helped turn frustrating moments into moments of love and laughter. These relationship tips have been suggested in thousands of books, but Ralya’s sincerity, scripture passages, and organization might win many readers over. Many women, like me, might feel more comfortable using the text and the companion books for individual reflection and study. A few less than “politically correct” comments surprised me. Some women may feel that the book puts too much emphasis on fixing ourselves - rather than on our husbands taking part in the process. However if the results are good, why worry about pointing fingers or who made more of an effort? These books, because of the author’s sincere intent, could improve the lives of married women who really wish to connect with their husbands, becoming caring partners again.

Pure by Jennifer L. Armentrout *comment and enter to win!*

There is need. And then there is Fate...

Being destined to become some kind of supernatural electrical outlet isn't exactly awesome--especially when Alexandria's "other half" is everywhere she goes. Seth's in her training room, outside her classes, and keeps showing up in her bedroom--so not cool. Their connection does have some benefits, like staving off her nightmares of the tragic showdown with her mother, but it has no effect on what Alex feels for the forbidden, pure-blooded Aiden. Or what he will do--and sacrifice--for her.

When daimons infiltrate the Covenants and attack students, the gods send furies--lesser gods determined to eradicate any threat to the Covenants and to the gods, and that includes the Apollyon... and Alex. And if that and hordes of aether-sucking monsters didn't blow bad enough, a mysterious threat seems willing to do anything to neutralize Seth, even if that means forcing Alex into servitude... or killing her.

When the gods are involved, some decisions can never, ever be undone.

Goodreads Summary

This book is the continuation of an exciting new series by author Jennifer L. Armentrout.  Alex is still the main character and still impulsive.  In training to become an Apollyon, Seth dogs Alex's every step.  Originally, this seems to annoy her, but maybe Seth isn't so bad after all.  She still longs for what she cannot have, as society dictates, Aiden.

Alex remains that brave, impulsive, and intelligent character that readers can look forward to.  She truly stands up for what she believes in; she is an easy character to love.  Aiden comes off as a little cold, but the reader can tell he truly likes her...as does Seth *love triangle*.  Alex must decide between the two, but the decision won't be easy and is complicated by Aiden's pure status.

In this novel, Alex finds herself in and out of trouble.  By standing up for the Half-Bloods she is reprimanded and threatened, by refusing to ignore her heart she has the potential to be sentenced to servitude, Alex must be careful in this Pure-governed world.

New characters are incorporated into the novel, providing even more excitement, action, and mystery.  The events of this book were extremely fast-paced and the characters drive the plot at a rapid pace.  The book is very well-written, the author captures the readers' attention and continues to hold it throughout the novel.  There is something for every reader, from mystery to romance to action to intrigue to suspense.  This book is highly recommended to young adult/teen readers.

Twilight by Stephanie Meyers

Monday, March 26, 2012
Isabella Swan's move to Forks, a small, perpetually rainy town in Washington, could have been the most boring move she ever made. But once she meets the mysterious and alluring Edward Cullen, Isabella's life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn. Up until now, Edward has managed to keep his vampire identity a secret in the small community he lives in, but now nobody is safe, especially Isabella, the person Edward holds most dear. The lovers find themselves balanced precariously on the point of a knife-between desire and danger.Deeply romantic and extraordinarily suspenseful, Twilight captures the struggle between defying our instincts and satisfying our desires. This is a love story with bite.

Goodreads Summary

Yes, I’m going to be the person to review Twilight. I read this book when it first came out in 2005. I was 15 years old and hated books. My friend recommended it to me, so I thought “meh, why not?” After reading I was hooked, everything was about Twilight. I tried to get my friends to read it, I couldn’t wait for the next book to come out, yadda yadda yadda.
I just picked up the book last week to re-read it and my view altered. I thought to myself “what changed? I loved this book!” Bella is whiney while Edward is conflicted and it goes on for more than half the book. The reason why most adults don’t like Twilight is because of the target audience. It still baffles me how I can change from loving a book to not want it in my hands again. Then again, I did re-read the fourth book and liked it. So let’s not get too hasty. I also saw every Twilight movie on its midnight release. Hey, it was a tween favorite of mine. *Shrugs*
The reason why I’m writing this review is to be on both sides. Twilight is a good read for girls that are into drama and conflicted love, and women who like to kill time. No, it doesn’t have the best writing. No, it doesn’t have strong characters. Yes, some of Bellas actions are extremely confusing. Yes, the vampires sparkle. This being said: if you’re iffy about reading the book, I think you should watch the movie first because it goes by the plot line. If you like what you saw then read it.
This review is all opinion based so if you disagree with what I’m saying write a comment rebutting your answer. I’d like to hear your side. What appeals Twilight to adults and children? What doesn’t?

Darkest Seduction by Gena Showalter

At long last, New York Times bestselling author Gena Showalter unveils the story of Paris, the darkest and most tormented Lord of the Underworld….Possessed by the demon of Promiscuity, immortal warrior Paris is irresistibly seductive—but his potent allure comes at a terrible price. Every night he must bed someone new, or weaken and die. And the woman he craves above all others is the one woman he'd thought was forever beyond his reach…until now. Newly possessed by the demon of Wrath, Sienna Blackstone is racked by a ruthless need to punish those around her. Yet in Paris's arms, the vulnerable beauty finds soul-searing passion and incredible peace. Until a blood feud between ancient enemies heats up.Will the battle against gods, angels and creatures of the night bind them eternally—or tear them apart?

Goodreads Summary

The Darkest Seduction is book nine in the series. This story follows the keeper of proximity, Paris. Since book two he’s been lusting after a woman named Sienna Blackstone. She is currently the keeper of Wrath, and trying to cope with the new life of being possessed by a demon. The book starts off where book eight – Strider and Kaia story – left off. Paris is trying to find Sienna by lying, cheating, and having blood on his hands. He doesn’t care who he kills or has sex with; he just wants to find the girl that he can lay with twice.

Paris is very different than the first time we met him. He’s darker, but in a bad boy sort of way. His goal is his woman, which is adorable (sigh). Sienna has also become darker, mostly because of Wrath. Cronos is holding her hostage and baiting her to stay with her long lost sister. Both Sienna and Paris have their own demons (besides the ones that are housed in them), and trying to find one another brings them out of their darkness.

This book is definitely a to-read book. Maddox and Ashlyns babies are born, which was a very touching scene. Darkest Seduction is the ending of many plots, and takes the readers into a whole different direction. Everything you know about the characters, war, locations… all of them are going to change. Darkest Seduction keeps you on your toes, and it gets hard to put the book down.

Another thing to note: William and Zacharel are both dominant characters as well. The next book that’s coming out is Gena’s spin off series “Angels of the Dark” which features the dangerous angel Zacharel. We read more about him, and gets us ready for the book coming out this summer. In my opinion, William is one of the best characters because of his humor. Gena made the right decision to make him the comic relief, because without him the book would become a little bit too dark and emo which is unappealing.

The next Lord will be Kane, the keeper of disaster. You’ll read an introduction to what he’s getting himself into, but he’s only mentioned a few times so there’s many ways the new direction can lead us.

If you are a Lord of the Underworld lover, you must, must, MUST read Darkest Seduction!

Take a Bow by Elizabeth Eulberg

From the fantastic author of The Lonely Hearts Club and Prom & Prejudice comes a story of all the drama and comedy of four friends who grow into themselves at a performing arts high school.

Emme, Sophie, Ethan, and Carter are seniors at a performing arts school, getting ready for their Senior Showcase recital, where the pressure is on to appeal to colleges, dance academies, and professionals in show business. For Sophie, a singer, it's been great to be friends with Emme, who composes songs for her, and to date Carter, soap opera heartthrob who gets plenty of press coverage. Emme and Ethan have been in a band together through all four years of school, but wonder if they could be more than just friends and bandmates. Carter has been acting since he was a baby, and isn't sure how to admit that he'd rather paint than perform. The Senior Showcase is going to make or break each of the four, in a funny, touching, spectacular finale that only Elizabeth Eulberg could perform.

Goodreads Summary

Take a Bow follows the journey of four students that attend a performing arts school in New York. Sophie, Emme, Carter, and Ethan all have their reasons for attending the school. Sophie desires stardom and all the attention that comes with it. She is not afraid of ruining friendships or using others, more often than not Emme and Carter, to get there. Emme just loves to create music and does not need the spotlight. She is devoted to Sophie and her band friends. Carter was a child star that is now unsure of whom he really is and loves to paint. He is dating Sophie, who he used to love, but now does not so certain. Ethan cannot help himself when it comes to music and Emme. He loves Emme, but is afraid of ruining their friendship. Music is Ethan’s outlet. He channels all his feelings and thoughts into the music he creates. Eulberg fashioned incredible characters. They had such strong personalities and seem realistic. Reading their journeys through their senior year of high school is fun and fast-paced.

This book could be enjoyed by male or female readers. Take a Bow would be loved by a high school aged audience or young adult readers. Music fans will adore this novel. Five out of five stars!

Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine

Sunday, March 25, 2012
At birth, Ella is inadvertently cursed by an imprudent young fairy named Lucinda, who bestows on her the "gift" of obedience. Anything anyone tells her to do, Ella must obey. Another girl might have been cowed by this affliction, but not feisty Ella: "Instead of making me docile, Lucinda's curse made a rebel of me. Or perhaps I was that way naturally." When her beloved mother dies, leaving her in the care of a mostly absent and avaricious father, and later, a loathsome stepmother and two treacherous stepsisters, Ella's life and well-being seem to be in grave peril. But her intelligence and saucy nature keep her in good stead as she sets out on a quest for freedom and self-discovery as she tries to track down Lucinda to undo the curse, fending off ogres, befriending elves, and falling in love with a prince along the way. Yes, there is a pumpkin coach, a glass slipper, and a happily ever after, but this is the most remarkable, delightful, and profound version of Cinderella you'll ever read.

Gail Carson Levine's examination of traditional female roles in fairy tales takes some satisfying twists and deviations from the original. Ella is bound by obedience against her will, and takes matters in her own hands with ambition and verve. Her relationship with the prince is balanced and based on humor and mutual respect; in fact, it is she who ultimately rescues him. Ella Enchanted has won many well-deserved awards, including a Newbery Honor.

Goodreads Summary

Ella Enchanted was published in 1997, and the target audience is 7-12 year olds. So why am I reviewing a book like this? Because of the movie staring Anne Hathaway. This book is a childhood favorite of mine, and I wanted to strangle the writers who wrote the script. The plot was 50% different from the book. Yes, Ella has been enchanted with a spell of obedience and has two step sisters that know (indirectly) of her spell, but that’s where it ends. Hopefully this review will get you to read the book… it will take about two hours of your time, and wont disappoint you.

Ella has the misfortune of having a spell of obedience placed on her when she was a baby. Only her mother and fairy servant know because the father was traveling at the time. They told her not to tell anyone about her curse incase someone would use it against her. Sadly, the mother passed away when she was very young. At her funeral, Ella met a young prince named Char. Char is cute, honorable, and wishes the best for his kingdom. They hit it off from the start, and became friends. Her father remarried a woman with two step daughters Hattie and Olive. The oldest figures out how obedient Ella is, and makes her give up many things like her mothers necklace. The whole plot revolves around Ella trying to break the spell. Many adventures feature ogres, fairies, centaurs, and knights.

There are NO evil kings trying to kill Char, NO weird snakes that talk, NO fan girls (although Hattie has an obsession…), ogres want to EAT Ella and not save her, Ella doesn’t have a command to kill Char… they have a steady friendship through out the whole book (and maybe get a little more), Mandy doesn’t have a guy stuck in a magic book…

AND THERE IS NO GOSH DARN DANCE NUMBER AT THE END!!!

That being said: please read the original book, I promise it will make you smile. :)

This product or book may have been distributed for review, this in no way affects my opinions or reviews.Fifteen-year-old Billy Ballard is the kid that everyone picks on, from the school bullies to the teachers. But things change drastically when Death tells Billy he must stand in as Pestilence, the White Rider of the Apocalypse. Now armed with a Bow that allows him to strike with disease from a distance, Billy lashes out at his tormentors...and accidentally causes an outbreak of meningitis. Horrified by his actions, Billy begs Death to take back the Bow. For that to happen, says Death, Billy must track down the real White Rider—who is lost in his memories.

In his search, Billy travels through White Rider’s life: from ancient Phrygia, where the man called King Mita agrees to wear the White Rider’s Crown, to Sherwood Forest, where Pestilence figures out how to cheat Death; from the docks of Alexandria, where cartons of infested grain are being packed onto a ship that will carry the plague, to the Children’s Crusade in France—all the way to what may be the end of the world. When Billy finally finds the White Rider, the teen convinces the man to return to the real world.

But now the insane White Rider plans to unleash something awful on humanity—something that could make the Black Death look like a summer cold. Billy has a choice: he can live his life and pretend he doesn’t know what’s coming, or he can challenge the White Rider for his Crown. Does one bullied teenager have the strength to stand his ground—and the courage to save the world?

Goodreads Summary

This is one of those books that deals with a difficult topic, but manages to make that topic applicable in such a way that teens/young adults will maintain interest and understand.  Billy Ballard is bullied.  The former sentence is alliterative and incredibly sad.  He doesn't fight back or defend himself, but takes most of the bullying in stride.  Adults are even sometimes around when he is bullied, but do nothing...an unfortunate fact in many cases.  The reader will connect to Billy and feel terrible on his behalf.  He doesn't have the easiest time at home either.  His grandfather is slowly succumbing to Alzheimer's disease and the effects of the disease often hurt Billy as well.

When Billy learns he has been more or less tricked into being the White Rider, he has no choice but to accept his fate yet again.  However, the more Billy delves into his new role, including his sudden ability to experience certain events in the far past, the more Billy gains his own strength and inner voice.  He also learns that he balances out the other Riders.  Balance is a strong theme in this book and may play a valuable lesson for the reader if the reader pays close attention.

Billy's character is wonderfully developed.  The reader will form and maintain a connection to his character throughout the novel.  The other characters, though mainly secondary, are interesting as well.  The author has that knack that makes the reader interested in the other characters as well.  The author distributes background information at just the right moments in the novel as well.  For example, right when the reader is beginning to feel less than sympathetic to the White Rider, she gives the reader a glimpse into his sad past.  The Riders of the Apocalypse is a wonderful series that covers difficult and often hidden topics that young adults/adults/teens would enjoy.

The Onyx Talisman by Brenda Pandos with an Awesome Giveaway!

Wednesday, March 21, 2012
Alora looked back and the corner of her lip turned up. “It’s always darkest before the dawn, Julia. Good luck.”
Her words sent chills up my spine as she vanished.

Unrest stirs deep in Scotts Valley. Filled with uncertainty, Julia anxiously awaits Nicholas’ return. Phil, hurt and unsure of his place as a sober vampire, holds the pieces of Julia’s fragile psyche together, secretly hoping Nicholas stays away forever. Scarlett bides her time, plotting for the perfect moment to prove herself and earn redemption. But somewhere in L.A., Alora conspires to reclaim her talisman and strip Julia of everything she holds dear.

Little do they know, a war is coming and more than one vampire would like to see the Prince of Vampires overthrown. As more and more vampires show up from nowhere, addicted to her scent, Julia must pick her allies carefully before it’s too late. Can Julia bargain with fate? When the time comes, will she even have a choice? Find out how it all ends in this explosive grand finale of The Talisman Trilogy.

Goodreads Summary

Finally, the finale of a wonderful series!  Julia has a destiny to fulfill and several secrets to uncover.  Julia's friends and family may not be quite what they seem and she will need to track down the person she suspects is harming vampires.  The reader will be treated to the appearance of more and more vampires as the ending draws near.  With the arrival of these vampires, a lot of trouble begins stirring in their small town.  Julia will have several difficult decisions to make.

Julia's character is unusual.  She is both easy to connect to, but hard to "read."  She will certainly manage to surprise the reader.  Typically, Julia displays integrity, bravery, and intelligence; however, there will be some portions in the novel where the reader will want to shake her.  Of course, this is the mark of a good author; when the reader cares that much about a character's actions, the author has succeeded.  The other characters will rub the reader in different ways.  Most of the time, the reader will be rooting for Julia and Nicholas.  Sometimes, it may be hard to keep the relationships separate, but the author does a good job of eliminating confusion between the couples.

The ending was definitely cute and many readers won't want it any other way though it was a little on the cheesy side.  However, Brenda Pandos wraps up the ending nicely and doesn't leave any loose ends for the reader to worry about.  This book is highly recommended to young adult/adult readers.

After the Snow by S.D. Crockett

Tuesday, March 20, 2012
Fifteen-year-old Willo was out hunting when the trucks came and took his family away. Left alone in the snow, Willo becomes determined to find and rescue his family, and he knows just who to talk with to learn where they are. He plans to head across the mountains and make Farmer Geraint tell him where his family has gone.

But on the way across the mountain, he finds Mary, a refugee from the city, whose father is lost and who is starving to death. The smart thing to do would be to leave her alone -- he doesn't have enough supplies for two or the time to take care of a girl -- but Willo just can't do it. However, with the world trapped in an ice age, the odds of them surviving on their own are not good. And even if he does manage to keep Mary safe, what about finding his family?

Goodreads Summary

Willo is an unusual character.  He is wild in his own way, raised in a world where there is only one season-winter.  He knows what he has to know, but isn't particularly educated...resulting in the book's slightly stilted dialogue.  However, the author does a wonderful job with this odd dialogue, the reader will be placed more firmly in the situation the book portrays.  The story starts when Willo returns home to find his entire family gone.  Willo decides that he might try his sister's husband, a wily and untrustworthy man, first.  He sets off and encounters an immediate obstacle-two starving children.  Willo has to decide if he should save his own meager supplies or if he can help the two children...he must also think about his family.

Willo's character, though unusual, was fun to read about.  His descriptions of events and scenes make the whole novel seem much more real to the reader.  He has a way of describing the environment that will paint that perfect picture in the readers' mind.  The other characters are not focused too much upon.  The young girl, one of the starving children, soon becomes a sort of companion to Willo.  She eases his loneliness and appears to be dependent on him for the most part.

The plot itself was fast-paced and interesting.  Endless winter?  Most of us cannot imagine that sort of environment, but the author manages to make it seem very possible.  The scenes will drag in some parts and fly by in others.  Overall, this book is worth at least one read-through and recommended to young adult/teen readers.

Have You Checked Out Smart Style Guide?

Monday, March 19, 2012
Take a look at this unique website where one can find tips on how to style certain types of hair to product reviews!  As for me, with my straight hair...I usually leave it alone rather than fuss with it.  However, I learned that I could choose between three chic styles, they even seem easy to maintain!  I loved this blog post, which helped me learn more about my hair and what styles will flatter it.  The Sleek Pony is hands-down my favorite.

Another post that helped fashion-unfriendly me was the Fashion & Style Do's and Don'ts. I have never really considered myself unfashionable, but I've been told by my mother that I could use a little help (and that's bad, folks).  To be honest, I never knew handbags made that big of a difference, but I'd rather appear professional and put-together than sloppy.  Combining masculine and feminine styles may sound odd, but when you really think about it, it is easy to see how a slightly more androgynous look could work.

I loved the Pearl Ceramic Straightener product review.   I tend to avoid straighteners, but that could be because I don't know how to properly use them -.-.  With a video review, I was able to view the benefits and proper usage of the product.  I loved how sincere and happy the woman was in the video, it was much easier to trust the advertiser.

There is so much on Smart Style Guide to be discovered!  Particularly if you're not so fashionable like me.  Who knows?  Maybe the proper hairstyle or look could make all the difference in that next interview.

Sixty Acres and a Bride by Regina Jennings

With nothing to their names, young widow Rosa Garner and her mother-in-law return to Texas and the family ranch. Only now the county is demanding back taxes and the women have only three months to pay. Though facing eviction, Rosa can't keep herself from falling in love with the countryside and the wonderful extended family who want only her best. Learning the American customs is not easy, however, and this beautiful young widow can't help but catch wandering eyes. Where some offer help with dangerous strings attached, only one man seems honorable. But when Weston Garner, still grieving his own lost love, is unprepared to give his heart, to what lengths will Rosa go to save her future?

Goodreads Summary

Newly widowed, Rosa Garner and her mother-in-law return from Mexico to Garner land in Texas where they find that the family farm is hopelessly buried in back taxes…with only three months to earn the money. With the friendship of extended family, Rosa and Louise join in the social life of the community while Rosa works at every opportunity, using creativity, ingenuity, diligence, and all her strength to earn enough to pay the taxes. Her efforts are confounded by the attraction which grows between her and Weston Garner, a heart-broken widow who feels he could never marry again. More complications exist in the form of Rosa’s new friend who has her heart set on handsome Weston and his successful ranch. There’s also a scary, wife-beating neighbor prowling around Rosa causing her to fear for her safety and reputation in the already prejudiced town.

Rosa and Weston make you love them. Author Jennings creates characters that feel so real…you wish they were. Rosa’s loyalty to family (that she didn’t even know until recently), her generosity, her optimism, her sense of fairness, and attempts to fit in – even when she feels she must hide her own heritage - just endear her to the reader. Weston’s sense of chivalry, morals, generosity, and honor make him a lovable white knight. Even better – a great-looking cowboy! Their kind hearted attitudes and efforts to act out their Christian religion despite hardships, misunderstandings, and sadness makes these characters shine. A terrific Western romance!

The Maid of Fairbourne Hall By: Julie Klassen

Fleeing a dishonorable man, Margaret abandons her pampered upper-class world for an anonymous life "below stairs." But will danger or love find her first?

Goodreads Summary

Set in 19th century England, this story offers an “upstairs, downstairs” view of the privileged and servant classes.  Margaret Macy has led a privileged life with a doting father that she adores and younger siblings she loves and protects.  When her father dies and her mother remarries, there is a grasping stepfather and new suitor in her life who intend to force her into marriage for the inheritance she will soon receive.  To escape their plans, Margaret becomes Nora, a servant looking for a position in crime-ridden, poverty-stricken London.  She winds up working for two brothers – one of whom she turned down as husband 2 years before and the other who she had hopes of marrying.

The author’s descriptions of Nora’s attempts to learn tasks like making beds and emptying chamber pots are humorous.  Coming down to the servant level makes Nora a much more sympathetic, friendly character.  Walking a mile in her servants’ shoes brings out the best in her.  I really enjoyed the humor provided by the supporting characters: Joan, Fiona, Mrs. Budgeon, Monsieur Fournier, and many others.  The image of servants turning to the wall to avoid their betters is funny yet sad.  The romance was great to read, but readers may want to bop her on the head because as late as page 257, Margaret is still drawn to older brother, Lewis Upchurch, rather than Nathaniel.

This story was hard to put down.  I loved the minor characters.  Their pride in their positions and kindness toward one another were heartwarming.  The storyline about Nathaniel’s eye-opening condemnation of the slavery on their island plantation added to the feeling in the story that every character improved their moral fiber.

Echo's Revenge by Sean Austin

"Echo's Revenge: The Ultimate Game" is the story of 2 brothers, online game masters, who discover that the game creature which they have repeatedly killed while gaming online- "ECHO"- is alive and pursuing them in real life. Through their experiences engaging with this overwhelming opponent, they discover the power of their loyalty to each other as they defeat this
seemingly invincible predator. This novel series is part of the on-going investigation taking place at Echohunt.com, which also features science, technology and engineering issues related to reality games.

Reggie Stone, age 14, and Jeremy Stone, age 11, are accomplished game masters. These 2 brothers prefer to live in the online world of gaming which they can control, rather than the explosive, unpredictable world of their mother and her boyfriend. In the online game world, Reggie and Jeremy battle monsters and can easily control their destiny- or so they think.

While participating in a focus group for AAA Reality Games, Reggie meets the top players of the online game "ECHO'S Revenge". What the gamers don't know is that during the focus group the latest evolution of the legendary shape-shifting game monster- ECHO-7- has become a sentient creature who closely monitors all of the game masters' self-admitted fears and weaknesses. When Reggie returns home, his mother's boyfriend has a dangerously violent outburst which forces Reggie and Jeremy to flee from their home. Unknown to them, the outburst is a blessing in
disguise.

As the boys start on their cross country journey to find their father, they begin to notice frequent Amber Alerts. What surprises them is that they recognize the kidnap victims in the alerts- they are all top gamers from the focus group. During their cross country journey, the boys hitch-hike with a variety of colorful characters and compile their own street code of life and ethics.

When ECHO tries to capture them outside a 7-Eleven convenience store in San Francisco, it finally reveals itself and the boys realize that it is the kidnapper of all of their fellow gamers. Confident after evading this terrifying enemy which knows far too much about them, the brothers arrive at their father's house only to be ambushed, kidnapped, and taken far away to be imprisoned in an abandoned mineral mine in the Mojave Desert. It is here, in a cauldron of underground enslavement with the other kidnapped game masters, that the boys are challenged beyond their physical and emotional limits as they learn the full impact of what ECHO-7 has become: an omnipotent God-like power.

Although face with probable death, the brothers decide to challenge ECHO. They engage the creature, and in doing so discover the power of their loyalty to each other as they defeat ECHO at its own game. In the creature's final moment of sentience, it realizes it's fatal error, and that it has "lost the game", but manages to commit one final act which haunts all of the gamers forever.

Goodreads Summary

This book earns five out of five stars. Austin crafted great, creative, independent characters. Jeremy and Reggie leave home to escape their mother’s cruel boyfriend. While hitchhiking to find their biological father in California, they learn that their fellow gamers were kidnapped by a video game predator that has come to life called ECHO. This villain is hoping to hunt down the boys and kidnap them in the real world. The boys are strong and look out for each other. Reading about brothers with such a strong bond was really nice. They are protective of each other, their relationship is admirable.  The reader may come to really care about the characters.

Echo’s Revenge is ideal for gamers, thrill lovers, and adventure fans. Boys would love this book and have fun on the website that accompanies the novel (echohunt.com). The author had a unique style that was really enjoyable. The next books in the series promise to be as exciting and fun as this first book.
