Dependent: Review and Giveaway!

When 45-year-old Ellen Michaels loses her husband to a tragic military accident, she is left in a world of gray. For 25 years her life has been dictated by the ubiquitous They—the military establishment that has included her like chattel with John’s worldly goods—his Dependents, Furniture, and Effects. They—who have stolen her hopes, her dreams and her innocence, and now in mere months will take away the roof over her head. Ellen is left with nothing to hold on to but memories and guilt and an awful secret that has held her in its grip since she was 19. John’s untimely death takes away her anchor, and now, without the military, there is no one to tell her where to go, what to do— no one to dictate who she is. Dependent deals with issues ever-present in today’s service families—early marriage, frequent long absences, the culture of rank, and posttraumatic stress, as well as harassment and abuse of power by higher-ranking officials. It presents a raw and realistic view of life for the lives of the invisible support behind the uniform.
Goodreads Summary
I liked how the author portrayed Ellen as a sympathetic yet accountable character. The novel starts out with a bang-Ellen's husband has suddenly died. The military is rather unceremonious after his death and Ellen doesn't have long to collect herself and move on.
I liked how the book had flashbacks that helped me to understand Ellen's character more. I felt like I was a witness to her growth and maturity. The reader will see how Ellen suffered while her husband was repeatedly gone on duty and had to get used to PTSD and a bit of a dictatorship of her life. I felt bad for Ellen, but still thought of her as a strong character. I felt horrible for her when she thought that a certain secret she kept may have contributed to her husband's demise. This book is recommended for adult readers.

AboutQuarantine #3: The Burnouts
Lord of the Flies in a 21st century high school setting. Welcome to Quarantine #3:The Burnouts, where readers ofThe Maze Runner,Gone, andDivergent go when they’re ready for more dark, compelling, survival stories.
In the third and final Quarantine book, David and Will are alive...but on the outside of McKinley High. Lucy is the last of the trinity left inside, where Hilary will exact a deadly revenge before taking over McKinley and bringing one final reign of terror to the school before the doors open for good. But the outside world is just as dangerous for carriers of the virus.
Review of Quarantine #3: The Burnouts
We dive right back into the action with the gangs and the services that they provide for the school. Two of the three original trinity have moved on but one is still left inside the school. Lucy needs help as she does not have a group to belong to and she is in danger of being scooped up by the wrong crowd. She is lost, alone and vulnerable and there are wolves out there ready to strike the weak.
The apocalyptic action is amazing in this final book in the trilogy. The first two books were great and this one is stellar. The action is amazing and is non stop as the pages unfold. One thing that you need to make sure to do as you read is pay attention to every page because of you miss something you will be back tracking to search for details. Where the book really shined was when it shifted to Lucy's point of view of the situation. It is real and at some points really saddening but is just great. You need to read this book!

2012 Summer IndieNext List (American Booksellers Association)
A Booklist Top Ten SciFi/Fantasy for Youth
★ “This is for fans of gritty sf dystopia, and Thomas’ whirlwind pace, painful details…simmering sexual content, and moments of truly shocking ultra-violence thrust this movie-ready high school thriller to the head of the class.”—Booklist, starred review
“The fast and gory action (one trap-filled hallway sequence is particularly memorable) should satisfy the core audience.”—Publishers Weekly
“The gritty, no-holds-barred, Lord-of-the-Flies-meets-Heathers plot will likely hook readers with a taste for bleak, action-packed survival stories.”—The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books
“A solid choice.”—School Library Journal
Reviews of Quarantine #2: The Saints
★ “With its morally dubious characters, charged sexual content, and double-take violence, this might be the darkest series going. Meanwhile, Lord of the Flies allusions (the adults’ benevolent arrival and, believe it or not, a pig hunt), add further interest. Here’s our demand: deliver the conclusion yesterday.”—Booklist, starred review
“This fast-paced novel will, however, appeal to fans of The Hunger Games trilogy.”—VOYA
“Thomas knows how to write a compelling story with flawed characters and intense situations.”—School Library Journal

After traveling through time in Shadow of Night, the second book in Deborah Harkness’s enchanting series, historian and witch Diana Bishop and vampire scientist Matthew Clairmont return to the present to face new crises and old enemies. At Matthew’s ancestral home at Sept-Tours, they reunite with the cast of characters from A Discovery of Witches—with one significant exception. But the real threat to their future has yet to be revealed, and when it is, the search for Ashmole 782 and its missing pages takes on even more urgency. In the trilogy’s final volume, Harkness deepens her themes of power and passion, family and caring, past deeds and their present consequences. In ancestral homes and university laboratories, using ancient knowledge and modern science, from the hills of the Auvergne to the palaces of Venice and beyond, the couple at last learn what the witches discovered so many centuries ago.
With more than one million copies sold in the United States and appearing in thirty-eight foreign editions, A Discovery of Witches and Shadow of Night have landed on all of the major bestseller lists and garnered rave reviews from countless publications. Eagerly awaited by Harkness’s legion of fans, The Book of Life brings this superbly written series to a deeply satisfying close.
Goodreads Summary
In the third and final release of the "All Souls," trilogy we jump right back into the supernatural action. The long anticipated release of this book was a little bit of a wait, but well worth the extra time that was put into its drop. We get our fix of good romance mixed with some legitimate historical themes thrown in to make a great well rounded finale. Fans of the paranormal and magic themed books will feel right at home as well because this trilogy explores these themes extensively and quite creatively.
What I really liked about the third book compared to the other two is that it brings back some old characters and explores their back stories further. It was specifically fun for me to see the De Clermont family again and learn a little bit more about them. With this in mind, we get a lot of details finally woven together to make a better understanding of the characters and their connections throughout the trilogy. If you have read the other two books, this is a must read as it sums the series up very nicely with a few more intense battles and some more interesting and creative situations. If you have not read the other two books, read them and then read this book. This is not a trilogy to miss!

Oblivion by Sasha Dawn: Book Giveaway!
«“Readers will feel unmoored until the last few pages of Oblivion, and that’s alright; so does the story’s narrator, Callie . . . . The book’s intensity can be overwhelming. Callie’s uncontrollable need to write—and the anxiety she feels when she can’t—is communicated as if by osmosis . . . . questions fade in the face of the incessant demands that the graphomania makes on both the characters and those turning the pages.”—Booklist starred review
“This gripping mystery excels in the portrayal of teenagers’ conflicted inner lives.”—Library Media Connection
“Thoroughly compelling.”—Kirkus Reviews
About Oblivion
Lisa McMann’s Dead to You meets Kate Ellison’s The Butterfly Clues in a psychological thriller full of romance, intrigue, and mystery.
Two years ago, Callie was found in an abandoned apartment, scrawling words on the wall: “I KILLED HIM. His blood is on my hands. His heart is in my soul. I KILLED HIM.” But she remembers nothing of that night or of the three previous days. All she knows is that her father, the reverend at the Church of the Holy Promise, is missing, as is Hannah, a young girl from the parish. Their disappearances have to be connected and Callie knows that her father was not a righteous man.
But the more she remembers, the closer she comes to the horrifying truth. And when a good looking guy in school helps her to remember what she's buried for so long, she might wish she never dug up the past.

Born at Midnight
Don’t miss this spectacular new series that will steal your heart and haunt your dreams, Welcome to Shadow Falls camp, nestled deep in the woods of a town called Fallen…
One night Kylie Galen finds herself at the wrong party, with the wrong people, and it changes her life forever. Her mother ships her off to Shadow Falls—a camp for troubled teens, and within hours of arriving, it becomes painfully clear that her fellow campers aren’t just “troubled.” Here at Shadow Falls, vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters, witches and fairies train side by side—learning to harness their powers, control their magic and live in the normal world.
Kylie’s never felt normal, but surely she doesn’t belong here with a bunch of paranormal freaks either. Or does she? They insist Kylie is one of them, and that she was brought here for a reason. As if life wasn’t complicated enough, enter Derek and Lucas. Derek’s a half-fae who’s determined to be her boyfriend, and Lucas is a smokin’ hot werewolf with whom Kylie shares a secret past. Both Derek and Lucas couldn’t be more different, but they both have a powerful hold on her heart.
Even though Kylie feels deeply uncertain about everything, one thing is becoming painfully clear—Shadow Falls is exactly where she belongs…
Goodreads Summary
Awake at Dawn
Step into the world of Shadow Falls, a camp that helps teens tap into their special…talents. Once you visit, you’ll never forget it—and you’ll never, ever be the same.
From the moment Kylie Galen arrived at Shadow Falls Camp, she’s had one burning question: What am I? Surrounded by vampires, werewolves, shape-shifters, fairies and witches, Kylie longs to figure out her own supernatural identity…and what her burgeoning powers mean. And now she’ll need them more than ever, because she’s being haunted by a new spirit who insists that someone Kylie knows—and loves—will die before the end of the summer. If only she only knew who she was supposed to save. And how…
But giving Kylie the most trouble is her aching heart. Gorgeous werewolf Lucas left camp with another girl, but he’s still visiting Kylie in her dreams. And Derek, a sexy half Fae who’s always been there for her when she needed him, is pushing to get more serious—and growing impatient, especially when Lucas returns. Kylie knows she needs to decide between the boys, and it’s tearing her up inside.
Yet romance will have to wait, because something from the dark side of the supernatural world is hiding in Shadow Falls. It’s about to threaten everything she holds dear…and bring her closer to her destiny.

With his pack standing in their way, Kylie finds herself turning more and more to Derek, the only person in her life who’s willing to accept the impossible.
As if life isn’t hard enough, she starts getting visits from the ghost of Holiday, her closest confidante. Trouble is, Holiday isn’t dead…not yet anyway. The breathtaking fourth installment of the New York Times bestselling Shadow Falls series from author C. C. Hunter...Whispers at Moonrise.
Here is some teaser information on Hunter's latest book Eternal. We have a short message from her giving us a little taste of what is to come.
"Now that I have finished Eternal, the second book in Della’s series, I can tell you a few things that happen in it:
- Never drive ninety miles an hour in a forty mile an hour speed-limit area.
- When it snows inside your bedroom, something spooky is going on.
- Breaking and entering isn’t nearly as much fun as you would think it would be. Especially when you are seconds from being caught.
- Riding in a convertible with the wind in your hair is almost as good as flying.
- Taking ice cream away from a girl suffering from a broken heart, might get you turned into a kangaroo with pimples."

The Genius Dilemma by Dustin Grinnell

A team of scientists has invented a new smart drug named Trillium. A revolutionary medical breakthrough, Trillium enhances cognitive abilities, creating geniuses. But the researchers are horrified to discover that…
GENIUS COMES AT A COST.
Leviathan, the CIA’s assassination team, has been tasked with eliminating global threats using any means necessary. When their superior General Beranger learns about Trillium, he believes he’s uncovered a distinct advantage in the fight against terrorism. After convincing the scientists to share the drug with his team, Beranger learns there’s just one problem—the side effects are disturbing.
Trillium creates cold-blooded psychopaths.
The first casualty is CIA operative David Landry who snaps hours after taking the drug. When he goes rogue, it’s up to Special Forces, along with renowned neuroscientist Alan Pierce and psychiatrist Michelle Emmett, to stop them.
Armed with a hastily concocted antidote, the team hunts Landry.
His destination? Africa. Nasir Lwazi, the Kenyan president, has recently been murdered. Believing Lwazi’s son Thomas is a threat to national security, Landry is on a ruthless mission to destroy him and he doesn’t plan to let anyone get in his way.
Alan and the Special Forces team are determined to reach Kenya and stop Landry before he harms Thomas or any other innocent civilians. But can they get there in time? Will the antidote work? Or will Landry suffer the same fate as their other targets?
In the unforgettable climax, an epic battle for power ensues as the Special Forces team attempts to thwart Landry’s homicidal tendencies.
Written in a style reminiscent of Michael Crichton, The Genius Dilemma is a science fiction thriller, action-packed with adventure, seeded with corruption, and stunning with its abuses of power. Expect the gripping conclusion to keep you compulsively turning pages way past your bedtime.
Goodreads Summary
If you could be thinner by taking a pill, would you take it? If you could be faster by taking a pill, would you take it? If you could be smarter and mentally sharper in every way by taking a pill, would you take it? They say that agility and speed will get you places in life, but the ability to outwit and outsmart everyone around you can make you an eerily and uniquely unstoppable force in this world. The mere idea of this story is fascinating and is very captivating for a wide audience range as everyone wishes that they were more intelligent. We would make less mistakes. Maybe even make no mistakes.
I really liked the conflict between the drug being a major problem and being an unremarkable advantage to the people who use it. On the one hand, people become much more able to quickly make the best decisions possible, however the cost is that people on the drug tend to become psychopathic. This is where this novel really grabbed my attention. I loved the application of the psychopathic genius on the battlefield. They get the job done in supremely efficient ways that you would never think of. It made for a book that is not only interesting to read, but very creative, ever changing, and very hard to put down.

(including writer Andy Greenwald, of whom I'm a big fan) did a fantastic
autopsy on the failure of COWBOYS & ALIENS to achieve success at the box

reading that, and pondering the film, an idea popped into my head—what if
aliens landed on Earth prior to the advent of modern technology, and they
simply assimilated into our human species with nary a whisper of their

From there, I began to imagine a boy

THE MAGICIAN’S LAND
By Lev Grossman
AN INDIE NEXT PICK FOR AUGUST 2014
As far as trilogies are concerned, this is the book and story that definitely finishes a three book story with a proper ending. All the questions that you were wondering from the first two are answered and there is good resolution to the story as a whole. This book is told from two different points of view, and throughout the book you learn how they eventually converge and line up as one. One is with Quentin and his journey with a new character and the other is with Eliot and Janet as they search Fillory for the reasons that their magic is having issues.
I loved the element of magic in this book. I know it is a book on this sort of thing, however it is presented in such an awesome way and the visuals you get from the text are just amazing. One thing that did bother me is the idea presented that Quentin is a great upstanding character. If you read into the section of the story dealing with the briefcase you will see first hand that this is not the case. Another good thing about this book, is the realism that is intertwined in with the magic elements. It is presented tastefully and doesn't get so ridiculous that it is unbelievable. Its a fun book and a great ending to a trilogy that all should read.

“Deeply satisfying finale to the best-selling fantasy trilogy… Grossman captures the magic of fantasy books cherished in youth and repurposes it to decidedly adult ends… The essence of being a magician, as Quentin learns to define it, could easily serve as a thumbnail description of Grossman’s art: ‘the power to enchant the world.’” — Kirkus Reviews (Starred Review)
“[THE MAGICIAN’S LAND] is endlessly fascinating and always proceeds apace…This is an absolutely brilliant fantasy filled with memorable characters—old and new—and prodigious feats of imagination. At one point, Quentin muses, ‘Magic and books: there aren’t many things more important than that.’ THE MAGICIAN'S LAND is ineffable proof of that claim.
Fantasy fans will rejoice at its publication.”
— Booklist (Starred Review)
“[T]his series taken as a whole brings new life and energy to the fantasy genre.”
—Library Journal
“An elegantly written third act to Quentin’s bildungsroman…Fans of the trilogy will be pleased.”
—Publishers Weekly
—Publishers Weekly
“Lev Grossman has conjured a rare creature: a trilogy that simply gets better and better as it goes along. THE MAGICIAN’S LAND is sumptuous and surprising yet deliciously familiar…Literary perfection for those of us who grew up testing the structural integrity of the backs of wardrobes.”
—Erin Morgenstern, author of The Night Circus
Viking is thrilled to release THE MAGICIAN’S LAND, the spectacular conclusion to Lev Grossman’s New York Times bestselling Magicians trilogy (On-sale: August 5, 2014; 978-0-670-01567-2; $27.95).
The trilogy opened with The Magicians which The New Yorker called “a darkly cunning story about the power of imagination itself…An unexpectedly moving coming-of-age story.” NPR called the sequel The Magician King “a spellbinding stereograph, a literary adventure novel that is also about privilege, power and the limits of being human.” Legions of fans now await THE MAGICIAN’S LAND, a novel full of the subversive brilliance that has put Grossman at the forefront of modern fantasy, which will bring theMagicians trilogy to a shattering, triumphant conclusion.
Familiar faces return alongside new characters in THE MAGICIAN’S LAND. After being booted unceremoniously from Fillory, Quentin Coldwater returns to his alma mater, the Brakebills Preparatory College of Magic, to make a new life as a teacher—even as Eliot and Janet race to save Fillory itself from a spectacular apocalypse. The demons of Quentin's past catch up to him and send him on a crooked quest through magic's seedy underworld, back to old haunts, old friends and old enemies. He discovers a powerful spell that would create a new magical land, but he must face his fears, and fix the errors of his past, before he can find the power to save the future.
THE MAGICIAN’S LAND is a tale of love and redemption—the story of a boy becoming a man, an apprentice becoming a master, and a broken land finally becoming whole. Old readers will devour the rich and riveting final book, and the completed arc will welcome newcomers who can binge-read the series in full.

THE BOOK OF LIFE
Book Three of the All Souls Trilogy
by
Deborah Harkness
“Harkness proves to be quite the alchemist as she combines elements of magic, history, romance, and science, transforming them into a compelling journey through time, space, and geography. By bridging the gaps between Harry Potter, Twilight, and Outlander fans, Harkness artfully appeals to a broad range of fantasy lovers…The conclusion of this paranormal adventure is guaranteed to fly off the shelves.”
—Booklist
Praise for SHADOW OF NIGHT
“The joy that Harkness, herself a historian, takes in visiting the past is evident on every page…A great spell, one that can enchant a reader and make a 600-page book fly through her fingertips, is cast.”
—Entertainment Weekly
“Deborah Harkness takes us places we’ve never been before…Readers time-travel as precisely and precariously as Diana and Matthew do…Shadow ends as Discovery did, with promises of more to come. Lucky for us.”
—USA Today
THE BOOK OF LIFE is the highly-anticipated final installment of the bestselling All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness (Viking; On-sale: July 15, 2014; $28.95). The trilogy began with A Discovery of Witches which People magazine called, “A wonderfully imaginative grown-up fantasy with all the magic of Harry Potter or Twilight”. The sequel Shadow of Night debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list, and the Miami Herald called it, “Enchanting, engrossing and as impossible to put down as its predecessor...a perfect blend of fantasy, history and romance.” In total, over one million copies have been sold in the States with publications following in 38 countries, leaving legions of fans eagerly awaiting THE BOOK OF LIFE, the satisfying conclusion to this superbly written series.
THE BOOK OF LIFE picks up right where Shadow of Night left off. After traveling through time, historian and witch Diana Bishop and vampire scientist Matthew Clairmont return to the present to continue their hunt for the magical alchemical manuscript, Ashmole 782, otherwise known as the Book of Life. At Matthew’s ancestral home at Sept-Tours, they reunite with the cast of characters from A Discovery of Witches—with one significant exception—ready to face old enemies. But the real threat to their future has yet to be revealed, and when it is, the search for the Book of Life and its missing pages takes on even more urgency. In the trilogy’s final volume, Harkness deepens her themes of power and forbidden passion, family and caring, past deeds and their present consequences. In ancestral homes and university laboratories, using ancient knowledge and modern science, from the hills of the Auvergne to the palaces of Venice and beyond, the couple at last learn what the witches discovered so many centuries ago.
