This book starts out very...lovey-dovey in the beginning. The main characters, Ellie and Michael, have just found out that they play massive roles in the end of the world. In a sorry attempt to stave off the end of the world, they resolve not to speak of their other natures, believing that their understanding and active talking about their "other selves" may be the catalyst that starts the clock that will end the world.
It's almost too much. Michael continuously writes love notes to Ellie, calling her "My Ellie" and whatnot. There is a point where this gets grating...although it is sweet in the beginning. Ellie responds in kind, just as loving. It is clear that the main characters love each other; however, it is an immature love. Michael is quick to accuse Ellie of cheating when he finds out that she has been hanging around Rafe, a student with some special powers of his own that she meets at a school stadium. Rafe and Ellie work together on a project dedicated to bringing relief to the volcano victims (for the reader's edification, the volcano was a sign of the end of the world).
Rafe and Ellie do have an immediate connection. Ellie feels safe and happy in Rafe's presence...unfortunately, their romance is over before it has a chance to start due to Rafe's otherworldly nature and the commitment Ellie and Michael must make to each other.
During this whole time when Ellie is off with Rafe, Michael is busy being angry and haughty. He becomes a bit of a star due to his football prowess...partly because he uses his powers on the field. Michael's newfound obsession with football is partly what drives Ellie and Michael apart and what brings them back together in a "final reckoning."
The novel was pretty good, but a bit of a letdown after the terrific first novel in this series. The plot could have been developed a bit more, the characters seemed a little...off, but the events were fast-paced and exciting to read about. Overall, this novel is recommended to readers who enjoy young adult fantasy and romance.
