When Ashley walks into a shop run by the vampire, Verloren, they both get the surprise of their lives. Ash is about to learn that she's not just another pretty young woman, while Verloren is astonished to find himself falling in love. But how can a vampire love a human? And what if the human isn't as human as she seems? When Ash's true nature reveals itself, the entire power structure of the world's outsiders teeters on the brink of destruction. Verloren and Ash become more and more terrified as they grope their way toward the ultimate truth: that they hold the key to something much larger than their own survival.

Goodreads Summary

The first quality the reader will notice is the immediate action.  The reader will meet Verloren right off the bat...along with the dreaded Quatre.  Verloren is a vampire, but not the sparkly, cutesy kind.  He is the goth with the long hair and pale skin with shockingly good looks.  He has a beating heart, but no soul.  The latter being his main concern in the novel, he is afraid to die (aren't we all?).  He has better cause to fear death than the average human due to his non-existent soul.  The Quatre are the supernatural creatures who rule the "non-human" world.  They are feared, as one word from them can lead to one's immediate demise.

The next character, Ashley, is special and beautiful enough to inspire unusual feelings such as love and desire, in Verloren.  The instant magnetism between Ashley and Verloren makes for a great romance in this novel.  Their romance appears doomed, however, due to Ashley's very human state.  She is the main drive in this book, the catalyst for all of the subsequent events.

This book was a surprisingly fast read.  There is plenty of action and drama with just enough horror to keep the reader interested throughout the novel.  The romance is perfectly played out while the horror part of the novel remains in the forefront; the main characters are truly and believably in love.  The mystery aspect of the novel pulls the whole novel together into one cohesive plot.  The reader will love the surprising twists that occur in the novel-especially concerning Ashley!  This book is told in from the first-person perspective, Verloren's perspective, making it even better as the story flows seamlessly.  Not enough books are told in the male vampire's point of view, this book will really stand out.  The ending leads into a sequel which means the reader will get to enjoy another great book from this author!

This novel is higly recommended to paranormal, horror, and romance readers.
