Such a Rush by Jennifer Echols

Saturday, June 9, 2012

A sexy and poignant romantic tale of a young daredevil pilot caught between two brothers.
High school senior Leah Jones loves nothing more than flying. While she’s in the air, it’s easy to forget life with her absentee mother at the low-rent end of a South Carolina beach town. When her flight instructor, Mr. Hall, hires her to fly for his banner advertising business, she sees it as her ticket out of the trailer park. And when he dies suddenly, she’s afraid her flying career is gone forever.
But Mr. Hall’s teenage sons, golden boy Alec and adrenaline junkie Grayson, are determined to keep the banner planes flying. Though Leah has crushed on Grayson for years, she’s leery of getting involved in what now seems like a doomed business — until Grayson betrays her by digging up her most damning secret. Holding it over her head, he forces her to fly for secret reasons of his own, reasons involving Alec. Now Leah finds herself drawn into a battle between brothers — and the consequences could be deadly.

Goodreads Summary

Jennifer Echols has done it again!  The reader will meet the main character, Leah, very quickly and get to know her well.  Leah's life isn't sweetness and roses, but she manages to make the best of it.  She escapes her homelife via flying.  When her flying instructor suddenly dies, she no longer knows what to do with herself.  Her flying instructor did not pass away and leave everything completely in the lurch, however, he had two sons, one with a strong interest and investment in flying.  One might think Leah would be happier, but instead she is frustrated.  Alec and Grayson, particularly Grayson, bully her into helping with their flight school.  With blackmail held over her head, what will resourceful Leah do?

Leah's character is the main draw to this book.  She is funny, smart, and amazingly calm.  She seems to have a good head on her shoulders and a knack for getting out of dangerous situations.  Grayson is moody, surly, and cute.  While he is certainly the love interest, the reader will likely find him/herself thinking "what the heck is Leah thinking."  In the end, the author ties up all of the loose ends and questions perfectly.  Alec is the "golden boy," he does very little wrong and Grayson seeks to impress him...Alec is also part of the reason Leah is blackmailed.  Leah's best friend will probably surprise the reader, she is definitely not what one might expect, but when the reader takes some time to think it over, he/she may change his/her mind.

The plot is fast-paced, the characters are likable, and the ending is perfect.  This reader will be hoping for more from Jennifer Echols to look forward to!

I'm still not sure if I want to read this. I guess I'm too obsessed with paranormal romance at the moment, to read anything else. :P Thanks for the review!

May I ask, what stopped you from giving the book 5 stars?

This was my first Jennifer Echols book! I loved it! Leah was really strong and had such a hard life. I thought Grayson was cute but so mean at first. I understand he was trying to help Alec but he went about it in all the wrong ways. A very intriguing story!

  1. First, the cover is beautiful. Every time I see it, I let out a little sigh. It really is beautiful. The book is very different from the things I usually read, even the contemp stuff. It does sound intriguing though, and I just don't think I could turn down the book if I ever had a chance to hold it and see the cover in person. I may just melt.
