Spell Bound by Kelley Armstrong

Saturday, June 16, 2012

At last, in the novel every Kelley Armstrong fan will need to own, all the major heroines and heroes of Otherworld are united.

It's been ten years since Bitten, the first novel in Kelley Armstrong's New York Times bestselling Otherworld series. In that time hundreds of thousands of fans have ravenously devoured the adventures of Armstrong's witches, demons, and werewolves. Now, in Spell Bound, she brings them all together for her most sweeping tale yet.

Savannah Levine is in terrible danger, and for once she's powerless to help herself. At the heartbreaking conclusion of Waking the Witch, Savannah swore that she would give up her powers if it would prevent further pain for a young orphan. Little did she know that someone would take her up on that promise.

And now, witch-hunting assassins, necromancers, half-demons, and rogue witches all seem to be after her. The threat is not just for Savannah; every member of the Otherworld might be at risk. While most of her fellow supernaturals are circling the wagons at a gathering of the council in Miami, Savannah is caught on the road, isolated from those who can protect her and unable to use her vast spell-casting talent, the thing she counts on most. In a story that will change the shape of the Otherworld forever, Armstrong gathers Elena, Clay, Paige, Lucas, Jamie, Hope, and other beloved characters, who soon learn that the greatest threat to supernaturals just may come from within.

Goodreads Summary

Ready for the twelfth book in this wonderful series!? Savannah's unforgettable character returns and the reader will be thrown into a world where danger is around every corner and the reader meets more than a few paranormal creatures. The reader should read the first few books in the series in order to fully understand the current plot.

In this novel, Savannah's powers are taken. She is resentful and sullen over this change and the reader will want to shake her more than once. Without any powers, she is simply a human private investigator, nothing special. She is further annoyed when the witch hunters begin to track her. Rather than behaving more maturely, she doesn't really act her age. One might think she would be far more careful, knowing that she was being tracked, but instead she is careless. Though her character may become aggravating, her flaws make her seem more realistic.

The plot is busy. The reader will have to follow several subplots and manage to connect-the-dots. There is a mysterious kidnapping, a group that wants to expose all paranormals, witch hunters, new relationships, etc... There is plenty of action and a little bit of romance to keep the reader happy. The reader's questions from previous books will go mostly unanswered and the reader may even find him/herself discovering a couple new questions. Overall, the book is perfect for Kelley Armstrong fans!

  1. I haven't read this series by the author but one of her others. This sounds pretty good though. Great review! :)

  1. Great review, just got my hands on the first couple of books. This one sounds interesting if a little complicated. Subplots and connecting of dots, my brain will probably need coffee while reading this one :)

  1. I am a recent Kelley Armstrong fan, so according to your review I should enjoy this read. I certainly hope so. I don't mind a busy read, so long as it's not TOO complicated in terms of plot. Will have to see. Thanks for your review.

I'm a huge Kelley Armstrong fan, but I've only read her young adult novels (so maybe a half-huge Kelley Armstrong fan :)) But this book looks great. That sucks that the plot was a bit busy, but it looks promising.

Kelley Armstrong has been on my to-read list for a long time. I understand this is many books into the series, but it sounds so exciting. It's been a while since I've read any interesting paranormals, and Savannah Levine sounds like an incredible, strong heroine (there needs to be more awesome heroines in YA lit these days). And you basically had me at witch-hunting assassins (so cool!). XD Thanks for this review! I'll definitely be pushing these books up on my TBR!

  1. Thank you all for the wonderful comments! Savannah was certainly a strong heroine =)

WOW 10 years and 12th book! I've been meaning to start this series. I have heard great things about it. I would hate to lose my powers! I need power! Kidnapping is always great too. I need to start this series.

  1. It does seem action packed. Maybe too much. I have not read any of the series yet, so I could actually enjoy it.

  1. I haven't gotten this far in the series yet and only found out about it about 2 years ago while wondering though a used book store. I found a first edition copy of Bitten and it was love at first read. I love busy reads so this one will work for me I'm sure!

  1. This isn't one of my favorite Kelley books, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. Good review! I agree that not much got answered in this one.

I love action, so I think this book sounds like my cup of tea! I've never read anything by Kelley, but I've heard great things. Wonderful review!

  1. I've been holding off on reading further in the Otherworld series than where I am (number 8) because she's not supposed to write any more and I can't bear for it to end! lol
