The Inspiration Behind the Book

By MK McClintock

Have you ever imagined another way of life? Have you ever dreamt of living in another time? Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have an adventure that may seem completely out of reach?

Chances are these questions inspire many writers and many books, but each of these is at the core of why I write and how the Gallagher series came to be. The stories didn’t just come to me out of nowhere—it was nurtured by years of dreaming. Ever since I saw my first western movie, I thought how exciting and wonderful it would be to live that life. I had already begun reading historical romances long before this, but it was watching that first western that planted the seed in my mind about historical western romances.

I allowed the seed to grow and the ideas to form until I no longer had thoughts churning around in my head. Instead I met the Gallagher family. I began to see their struggles and hard work. I felt their pain and joy, their sorrows and accomplishments. They became as real as the mountains and streams of Montana-they became family.

When I first met Gabriel in Gallagher’s Pride, I knew we would see so much more of him. In Gallagher’s Hope, he became more than I ever imagined. He charmed me with his smiles and devotion to those he loves. I met his darker side and fell even more in love. Isabelle had her own sorrows, but she didn’t allow the weight of the worries to stop her from doing whatever she must for her brother. Like Brenna in Gallagher’s Pride, Isabelle had her own journey and struggles and her eventual faith in Gabriel touched me dearly.

As I walked along the Swan River or stood on top of Mt. Aeneas and looked out over the valley I call home, I knew the Gallaghers would find happiness and adventure in this remarkable place. I saw them build their ranch from nothing and bring a family into the world so that they may carry on the legacy. I knew their lives wouldn’t be easy, but I also knew they would find love and a reason to survive on this wild land.

As sure as I’m breathing, there was no way to stop the story from taking on a life of its own. The true inspiration behind the book is the Gallagher family. Without them there would be no story. They inspire me, not the other way around.

Summary:

She sought a new beginning.
He sought what he didn’t know was missing.
Together they would discover hope in unlikely places

Isabelle Rousseu must escape New Orleans and the memory of her family’s tragic loss. With her younger brother in tow, she accepts a position as the new schoolteacher in Briarwood, Montana. Desperate to keep what’s left of her family together, Isabelle joins her life with a stranger only to discover that trust and hope go hand in hand.

Gabriel Gallagher lived each day as it came believing he had everything he could possibly want...until a determined woman and her brother arrive with a little luggage and a lot of secrets.

It will take a drastic choice to protect her and give them both, hope for the future.

Excerpt:

There was nothing left of the life she had known.

Her slender arm wrapped around the little boy’s shoulder and pulled him closer to his side. She could feel his slight trembling and wished more than anything that she could take his sadness. They were alone in the world. They had each other and she prayed that would be enough for them both.

They stood and listened as the priest gave the final blessing and the caskets were lowered into the ground. It wasn’t something anyone should witness, but she needed the closure. She needed to know that it was over. ‘A very sad affair’ everyone called it for it wasn’t every day that a man murdered his wife and then shot himself. It wasn’t healthy to think on the possible reasons why, but she couldn’t seem to help herself. She had truly believed that they had been a happy family. One of the wealthiest in New Orleans and one of the most respected and sought out for social gatherings. The truth however, was revealed with her father’s death. No one would speak of it to them of course, but the lawyer had made it quite clear.

They were penniless.

You are a new-to-me author so it should be fun to follow you around on your tour this week. I like what I've read about your books so far. I love historicals and there are few good books set in the American West anymore. In what year are the stories set?

  1. MomJane--I would love that! Actually I wish I could live my books during this lifetime. I work at it every day, but unfortunately I would be a little lost without my computer.

  1. Karen H.--The books are set in the late 1800's. The first one begins in 1869 Scotland, but most of it takes place in Montana in late 1882 and Scotland 1883.

    Gallagher's Hope begins in 1883.

Good luck with the drawings and I hope you enjoy the books! Thank you for stopping by and saying hi!

  1. Anonymous--It's sometimes difficult for me to step outside my usual genres too, but I've found some great books that way. I hope you enjoy them!
