Orion is a Subpar, expected to mine the tunnels of Outpost Five, near the deadly flash curtain. For generations, her people have chased cirium—the only element that can shield humanity from the curtain’s radioactive particles. She and her caving partner, Dram work the most treacherous tunnel, fighting past flash bats and tunnel gulls, in hopes of mining enough cirium to earn their way into the protected city.
But when newcomers arrive at Outpost Five, Orion uncovers disturbing revelations that make her question everything she thought she knew about life on both sides of the cirium shield. As conditions at the outpost grow increasingly dangerous, it’s up to Orion to forge a way past the flashfall, beyond all boundaries, beyond the world as she knows it.
Goodreads Summary
I love books on nuclear topics and this book fascinated me. Orion is a special Subpar. She mines for cirium which is a protector against nuclear fallout. She can detect cirium far better than most of the other Subpars and is working toward the 400 gram goal for each person in her family (400 each) to get her family members and Dram under the safe curtain to the protected city. Unfortunately, whenever you're that good at something it's unlikely the people in charge will let you escape that easily...
I loved Orion's character. She was determined, stubborn, and hard-working. I loved her friendship and later romance with Dram. She truly cared about him and the reader will be able to tell that there is a strong history between the two. I did not like how Dram said that another girl in their town was just a "stand-in"/"diversion" until Orion saw him as a romantic interest. That really rubbed me the wrong way because I hate that mentality. I liked most aspects of Dram and his devotion to Orion was fantastic, but that one sentence really paled his character for me. The ending wasn't particularly surprising and I am looking forward to another book from this author.

About Me

- Chicago, Illinois, United States
- I'm a young college student who has probably read over 5000 books over the course of my short life; some of the books were classics, some of the books were terrific, and some of the books were...misses. Even with the latter part I will always believe in the power of books to completely remove the reader from his/her present reality. Long Live Books! I would love to read and review books from just about any genre. To contact me: edysicecreamlover18 AT gmail DOT com Thank you for your interest! At this time, I can only accept paperback or hardcover. The finished review copies I receive are either kept in my personal collection or donated to several libaries, schools, or charities-I have no control over the finished review copies after donation. *I claim no ownership for any images used on this site.
