Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant Parks keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don't like her. She jokes that she won't bite, but they don't laugh.
Goodreads Summary
I adored this book. Another take on the "zombie" genre, this book is inventive and a fun read! Melanie is a smart girl who is being studied. She doesn't know completely what is going on as she was raised within a sort of lab. She is not a normal child, but there are some things that are stable for her. She has a favorite teacher, Miss Justineau. That teacher is one of the rare teachers who sees the children as children and not laboratory specimens. Melanie enjoys learning about the outside world as well as a whole host of other topics. She has classmates that are sort of friends. She is also considered highly intelligent and dangerous.
The reader will be introduced into a world where fungus dominates and affects humans in odd, surreal ways. The author does a brilliant job of describing the dystopian society and creating the feel of desperation and a need to solve the problem. The solution to the fungus is nothing that the reader will easily guess. This book kept me hooked since page one; I've reread portions here and there and have pushed this book on others. This was a really unique concept and highly recommended to young adult/adult readers.

About Me
- Krystal Larson
- Chicago, Illinois, United States
- I'm a young college student who has probably read over 5000 books over the course of my short life; some of the books were classics, some of the books were terrific, and some of the books were...misses. Even with the latter part I will always believe in the power of books to completely remove the reader from his/her present reality. Long Live Books! I would love to read and review books from just about any genre. To contact me: edysicecreamlover18 AT gmail DOT com Thank you for your interest! At this time, I can only accept paperback or hardcover. The finished review copies I receive are either kept in my personal collection or donated to several libaries, schools, or charities-I have no control over the finished review copies after donation. *I claim no ownership for any images used on this site. Yes! I adored this book! Not just for the awesome take on the genre, but for the capacity for human compassion and what makes monsters. And yay diversity. :)
