Forbidden by Eve Bunting

Tuesday, September 29, 2015

In early-nineteenth century Scotland, sixteen-year-old Josie, an orphan, is sent to live with an aunt and uncle on the rocky, stormy northwest coast. Everything and everyone in her new surroundings, including her relatives, is sinister, threatening, and mysterious. She's told that Eli, the young man she's attracted to, is forbidden to her, but not why. Spirited, curious, and determined, Josie sets out to learn the village's secrets and discovers evil, fueled by heartless greed, as well as a ghostly presence eager for revenge. An author's note gives the historical inspiration for this story.

Goodreads Summary

Here we have a tale of forbidden love in a world filled with darkness. Everything seems to be going against Josie and it seems like she is caught in a current flowing the opposite direction than the gaze of her desires. Even the spirits present floating around seem to be perched and ready to strike.

I couldn't help but feel sorry for Josie as it seems like she keeps getting mentally beaten on more and more the more she turns around in life. Then she finally finds the man that she wants in life, and is told by her family that she can't be with him. I would be completely frustrated and depressed. One thing that screams positive about this book is the historical presence. I love all the mental images I get while reading through the story and thinking about Scotland. Overall, it is definitely worth a read.

  1. I am looking forward to at least giving this one a shot. I'm not entirely sure that it is going to be my kind of book, but it sounds good enough that I want to at least try!
