Maya and her friends--all of whom have supernatural powers--have been kidnapped after fleeing from a forest fire they suspect was deliberately set, and after a terrifying helicopter crash they find themselves pursued by evildoers in the Vancouver Island wilderness.
Goodreads Summary
Armstrong’s young adult novel, The Calling, is the second in the Darkness Rising trilogy. This book follows Maya and her friends as they struggle to survive in the Canadian Wilderness after a fire in their hometown causes them to escape the flames by being kidnapped in a helicopter that crashes in the forest. The Calling isn’t a survival story though, Maya and her friends have strange abilities and powers causing them to be more than just desirable to several companies that seek to use them for profit. Maya and her friends don’t know all the details though, and are trying to rely on instinct to survive and find their way home.
Maya is a good heroine with many admirable qualities. She is a natural leader with a good heart, but stubborn personality. All the uncertainty in her life does not stop her from trying to protect her friends and family. Kelley Armstrong created Maya as strong and dynamic. The detail in the novel entices any readers who hope to lose themselves in the book. Reading this book is never boring, a reader does know what to expect or what could happen next. The supernatural characteristics of the novel become plausible as the pages turn and the story unfolds.
Teenage girls and young adult readers would enjoy this book. Excitement, adventure, and light romance appeal to women and girls who love strong heroines and supernatural novels. The first book of the series, The Gathering, does not need to be read to understand this book. Armstrong connects the two novels but anyone can enjoy this latest book.

About Me

- Chicago, Illinois, United States
- I'm a young college student who has probably read over 5000 books over the course of my short life; some of the books were classics, some of the books were terrific, and some of the books were...misses. Even with the latter part I will always believe in the power of books to completely remove the reader from his/her present reality. Long Live Books! I would love to read and review books from just about any genre. To contact me: edysicecreamlover18 AT gmail DOT com Thank you for your interest! At this time, I can only accept paperback or hardcover. The finished review copies I receive are either kept in my personal collection or donated to several libaries, schools, or charities-I have no control over the finished review copies after donation. *I claim no ownership for any images used on this site. I was disappointed that you only gave it 3 stars. I'm currently reading it so I'm a good judge of what's happening so far, I haven't read enough yet. I've been waiting so long for this book and so loved the 1st book that my expectations may be a little bit too high but I hope not. Thanks for the review & the great giveaways.
