What Makes A Keeper?
Hi, everyone! I’d like to offer a big thank you to Krystal
for having me over for a visit. It’s great to be here! Today, I thought I’d
chat about just what makes a book…into a keeper. Ah, keeper. I’m talking about those
wonderful books that you read once…and you have to read again. And again. Books that never leave your mind. Books that
touch you.
Just what is it about them that makes those stories so
special? Well, I have a few ideas.
1.
The characters. Characters who are just
unforgettable populate the pages of keeper novels. I remember reading a Julie
Garwood book (Honor’s Splendour)…in
it, the heroine was saving the hero. She took his ice-cold feet (seriously, the
guy was frigid), and she put them on her bare stomach to help warm him up. It
was a genuine, unselfish act, and the moment I read it, I knew I was dealing
with a special heroine.
2.
The twists. The turns. When I’m reading a book
that I can’t predict, I get lost. Absolutely lost. Gone Girl did this to me. I had to go back and re-read the book
just to see what clues I’d missed.
3.
The ending.
I need an ending that blows me away. That just makes me teary or it
makes me smile or it stops my heart (for just a moment). When a book has an
ending that I can feel…I know I’m
reading a keeper. When I was younger, I was addicted to Judith McNaught books
for this very reason…her endings were phenomenal.
But what do you think? What makes a book into a keeper for
you?
Have a wonderful summer—and thanks for checking out my post!
Best,
Cynthia Eden
