Welcome to New Vegas, a city once covered in bling, now blanketed in ice. Like much of the destroyed planet, the place knows only one temperature—freezing. But some things never change. The diamond in the ice desert is still a 24-hour hedonistic playground and nothing keeps the crowds away from the casino floors, never mind the rumors about sinister sorcery in its shadows.
At the heart of this city is Natasha Kestal, a young blackjack dealer looking for a way out. Like many, she's heard of a mythical land simply called “the Blue.” They say it’s a paradise, where the sun still shines and the waters are turquoise. More importantly, it’s a place where Nat won’t be persecuted, even if her darkest secret comes to light.
But passage to the Blue is treacherous, if not impossible, and her only shot is to bet on a ragtag crew of mercenaries led by a cocky runner named Ryan Wesson to take her there. Danger and deceit await on every corner, even as Nat and Wes find themselves inexorably drawn to each other. But can true love survive the lies? Fiery hearts collide in this fantastic tale of the evil men do and the awesome power within us all.
Goodreads Summary
Natasha leads the reader into a world where everything has been destroyed. A 2012 citizen would not recognize the world Natasha currently lives in. The authors describe the environment as destroyed-much of the Earth is frozen. The oceans are toxic and supposedly contain no life. There are replacements for the very expensive water and air that someone like me finds unimaginable.
The reader first meets Natasha at the beginning of the novel. Natasha is much younger and very confused. She tries to escape from those that would hurt her because she is "marked"-she is a girl with "special abilities." The marked contain a form of magic within them that enables the government to use them to their advantage. She decides to search for the "Blue," a world where air is pure and the water is sweet and thriving with life. On her way to find the Blue, she hires Ryan Wesson and his motley crew to take her. The addition of these men add a mysterious element to the novel. The reader will feel as if he/she does not know enough about Natasha, but Ryan is a mad who keeps his cards close to his chest.
Although it was somewhat difficult to get to know and love the characters, I was very attached to Ryan and Natasha and did not want to put the book down. Luckily for me, this is the first book in a series! This book is perfect for young adult/teen readers.
