   ARC of Unhinged

Synopsis:

Alyssa Gardner has been down the rabbit hole and faced the bandersnatch. She saved the life of Jeb, the guy she loves, and escaped the machinations of the disturbingly seductive Morpheus and the vindictive Queen Red. Now all she has to do is graduate high school and make it through prom so she can attend the prestigious art school in London she's always dreamed of.

That would be easier without her mother, freshly released from an asylum, acting overly protective and suspicious. And it would be much simpler if the mysterious Morpheus didn’t show up for school one day to tempt her with another dangerous quest in the dark, challenging Wonderland—where she (partly) belongs.

As prom and graduation creep closer, Alyssa juggles Morpheus’s unsettling presence in her real world with trying to tell Jeb the truth about a past he’s forgotten. Glimpses of Wonderland start to bleed through her art and into her world in very disturbing ways, and Morpheus warns that Queen Red won’t be far behind.

If Alyssa stays in the human realm, she could endanger Jeb, her parents, and everyone she loves. But if she steps through the rabbit hole again, she'll face a deadly battle that could cost more than just her head.

Frozen by Melissa de la Cruz and Michael Johnston

Welcome to New Vegas, a city once covered in bling, now blanketed in ice. Like much of the destroyed planet, the place knows only one temperature—freezing. But some things never change. The diamond in the ice desert is still a 24-hour hedonistic playground and nothing keeps the crowds away from the casino floors, never mind the rumors about sinister sorcery in its shadows.

At the heart of this city is Natasha Kestal, a young blackjack dealer looking for a way out. Like many, she's heard of a mythical land simply called “the Blue.” They say it’s a paradise, where the sun still shines and the waters are turquoise. More importantly, it’s a place where Nat won’t be persecuted, even if her darkest secret comes to light.

But passage to the Blue is treacherous, if not impossible, and her only shot is to bet on a ragtag crew of mercenaries led by a cocky runner named Ryan Wesson to take her there. Danger and deceit await on every corner, even as Nat and Wes find themselves inexorably drawn to each other. But can true love survive the lies? Fiery hearts collide in this fantastic tale of the evil men do and the awesome power within us all.

Goodreads Summary

Natasha leads the reader into a world where everything has been destroyed.  A 2012 citizen would not recognize the world Natasha currently lives in.  The authors describe the environment as destroyed-much of the Earth is frozen.  The oceans are toxic and supposedly contain no life.  There are replacements for the very expensive water and air that someone like me finds unimaginable.

The reader first meets Natasha at the beginning of the novel.  Natasha is much younger and very confused.  She tries to escape from those that would hurt her because she is "marked"-she is a girl with "special abilities."  The marked contain a form of magic within them that enables the government to use them to their advantage.  She decides to search for the "Blue," a world where air is pure and the water is sweet and thriving with life.  On her way to find the Blue, she hires Ryan Wesson and his motley crew to take her.  The addition of these men add a mysterious element to the novel.  The reader will feel as if he/she does not know enough about Natasha, but Ryan is a mad who keeps his cards close to his chest.

Although it was somewhat difficult to get to know and love the characters, I was very attached to Ryan and Natasha and did not want to put the book down. Luckily for me, this is the first book in a series!  This book is perfect for young adult/teen readers.

Bubble World by Carol Snow

Tuesday, June 25, 2013

Freesia’s life is perfect. She lives on the beautiful tropical island of Agalinas, surrounded by idyllic weather, fancy dress shops, and peacocks who sing her favorite song to wake her up in the morning. She has so many outfits she could wear a different one every day for a year and not run out.

Lately things on the island may have been a bit flippy: sudden blackouts, students disappearing, even Freesia’s reflection looking slightly . . . off. But in Freesia’s experience, it’s better not to think about things like that too much.

Unfortunately for her, these signs are more than random blips in the universe. Freesia’s perfect bubble is about to pop.

Goodreads Summary

A virtual world where you’re popular, beautiful, smart, and rich!  What a great concept!  I had a hard time putting this book down.  The first chapters are so plastic and artificial that although I didn’t want to stop reading…I did skim some pages.  The contrasts between the real world and the ideal world are amazing.  As Freesia (Francine) reestablishes connections with her real parents and her sister, it is so cool to see the shallow and deep ways that we interact with our family and our friends.  How the persona we would like others to see is so important to our self-confidence – yet we don’t want to work on making those appealing qualities real in ourselves.

The book reminds me of how addicted my nieces and nephews have been when it comes to video games and “facebook”.  They put up pictures and stories about themselves that they want others to see because it fits the persona that they want others to believe.  They immerse themselves in battles and fighting, with guns, knives, and bombs, which they would be to kind to ever take part in.  Maybe the kids themselves are getting too heavy, eating badly, or not sleeping, but in their perfectly constructed view of their world…they are happy and fulfilled because someone clicks on an icon that means “like”.
As you can tell, I am older…finally, more comfortable with myself….but still dying my graying hair.  I’m not the target audience for this novel, but I was so impressed with the ideas and dialogue, with the deeper meanings.  I think young adults and teens will be entertained by Snow’s story; they may also gain some insight into their lives and appreciation for what’s real.

45 Pounds (more or less) By: K.A. Barson

Here are the numbers of Ann Galardi’s life:

She is 16.
And a size 17.
Her perfect mother is a size 6.
Her Aunt Jackie is getting married in 10 weeks, and wants Ann to be her bridesmaid.
So Ann makes up her mind: Time to lose 45 pounds (more or less) in 2 1/2 months.

Welcome to the world of infomercial diet plans, wedding dance lessons, embarrassing run-ins with the cutest guy Ann’s ever seen—-and some surprises about her NOT-so-perfect mother.

And there’s one more thing. It’s all about feeling comfortable in your own skin-—no matter how you add it up!

"Deliciously relatable with a lot of laughter on the side." -- Rita Williams-Garcia, New York Times best-selling author

Goodreads Summary

When my niece was reading 45 pounds, she came over to me laughing out loud over the scene where Ann Galardi is trapped in a too-tight outfit in a dressing room.  I haven't exactly been in that situation...but I know the feeling of trying something on and thinking...will I rip it?  Should I keep trying to get in this dress (or whatever it is)?  In fact, I thought that Barson had come up with a creative idea for a clothing store called Snapz! where the largest of customers can wear a size 3.  I was shocked when someone at work talked about a store in our local mall where the sizing was set up that way.  She said that my size 12 would be a 2 at this popular store (that I’d never heard of).
I really enjoyed the novel because of the humor.  Sometimes I thought…oh,no…serious moment here interrupting the fun.  But the serious situations were meaningful…and fit Ann’s life.  I like to relate to situations and characters in books.  Some family of ours had pantries stacked with prepared foods like the S2S meals that Ann tries.  It didn’t last or work well for my family either.  Situations in Ann’s blended families are poignant.  What rotten grandma would tell a kid to take the picture rather than be in it – just because the child isn’t her grandchild?  I can see how eye-opening it would be to find out that your dad (who you jealously imagine is treating his step-children and new children so wonderfully) is actually a jerk.  This novel talks about friendship (real friends like Raynee), finding (and appreciating) yourself, understanding your parents and their problems, and dating.  Yay! – not all guys would like to date a (real) size 0.  The drinking scene is disappointing because you really come to respect Ann in many ways, but like trouble in families and weight difficulties – it’s unfortunately a realistic picture of a teen.  I love how comfortable Ann’s grandma makes Ann feel.  A grandparent to the rescue with teens having trouble – that often happens, doesn’t it?

The Heiress of Winterwood By: Sarah Ladd

Pride goes before the fall . . . but what comes after?

Darbury, England, 1814

Amelia Barrett, heiress to an ancestral estate nestled in the English moors, defies family expectations and promises to raise her dying friend’s infant baby. She'll risk everything to keep her word—even to the point of proposing to the child’s father, Graham, a sea captain she’s never met.

Tragedy strikes when the child vanishes with little more than a sketchy ransom note hinting to her whereabouts. Fear for the child’s safety drives Amelia and Graham to test the boundaries of their love for this infant.

Amelia’s detailed plans would normally see her through any trial, but now, desperate and shaken, she examines her soul and must face her one weakness: pride.

Graham’s strength and self-control have served him well and earned him much respect, but chasing perfection has kept him a prisoner of his own discipline.

Both must learn to accept God’s sovereignty and relinquish control so they can grasp the future He has for planned for them.

Goodreads Summary

Sometimes we can feel trapped by circumstances of our modern lives: money problems, bad relationships, lack of choices…  My imagination sometimes glorifies the lives of the 19th century British women – the huge homes, servants, beautiful clothing, and the deference they receive from family members.  Amelia in this novel has all those things, but she lacks control over her life because her uncle and her station in society bind her to meet certain expectations.  I enjoyed how she flouted those conventions.  She made a promise, and she intends to keep it…no matter what her uncle and aunt tell her.

I can’t say that the story is a riveting read.  It’s “comfortable” like the scenes with baby Lucy, Amelia, and Mrs. Donne reading psalms.  “Nothing compared to the serenity of cradling a sleeping infant.”  Some of the situations are easily predictable, but I still enjoyed reading the dialogue between Amelia and the odious Edward, between Amelia and stalwart Graham who puts duty to his ship and men above his own family.  The fact that her uncle’s business plans were his guide to Amelia’s marriage plans annoyed me.  I was as outraged as Amelia when uncle and Edward fire her father’s trusted financial manager and adviser, Mr. Carrington.  I was happy to read that “No-name” was finally christened, signaling Graham’s decision to 100% bring Amelia and his home back into his life.  I appreciated the wisdom of Stephen Sulter’s counsel for Graham about being a good, responsible person who sometimes makes mistakes and takes them too much to heart with a terrible feeling of guilt.  It’s so important to accept God’s forgiveness and then forgive yourself.
The novel is sometimes too “comfortable” and predictable…but it is an enjoyable read with good characters.

Janie Face to Face By: Caroline B. Cooney

In this riveting and emotional conclusion to the thriller-romance Janie series, that started with The Face on the Milk Carton, all will be revealed as readers find out if Janie and Reeve’s love has endured, and whether or not the person who brought Janie and her family so much emotional pain and suffering is brought to justice.

Goodreads Summary

I read the first book because my daughter suggested it.  As a mom, the horror of having a child taken...and not seeing her until she was grown made me keep my kids closer to me whenever we were away from home.  I missed reading the middle "Janie" novels, but picked this one up and I'm glad I did.  I know that I've missed so much: renewed relationships and broken ones.  Based on my impressions from the first book, I was surprised that Janie made some of the choices that she did.  Hannah seemed scary but mentally unbalanced in the first book, so I could give her a little sympathy. It was hard to believe that nice people like the Johnsons could have raised her.  No matter how rotten your child seems though...you still want to help them - and Frank has.  That's a disappointment.  Here, Hannah seems so much worse - despicable.

Janie's decision to change her name felt wrong, and I felt bad for the parents who raised her.  She seemed to be distancing herself from them too much.  Otherwise, I love a happy ending and a strong character like Janie (Jennie).  You rejoice with the Springs for their happy ending, and I'm glad Cooney brought Reeve back.  I like him in the first book (how could he sell her out? - might have to go back and read The Voice on the Radio).

Stealing the Preacher by Karen Witemeyer

On his way to interview for a position at a church in the Piney Woods of Texas, Crockett Archer can scarcely believe it when he's forced off the train by a retired outlaw and presented to the man's daughter as the minister she requested for her birthday. Worried this unfortunate detour will ruin his chances of finally serving a congregation of his own, Crockett is determined to escape. But when he finally gets away, he's haunted by the memory of the young woman he left behind--a woman whose dreams now hinge on him.

For months, Joanna Robbins prayed for a preacher. A man to breathe life back into the abandoned church at the heart of her community. A man to assist her in fulfilling a promise to her dying mother. A man to help her discover answers to the questions that have been on her heart for so long. But just when it seems God has answered her prayers, it turns out the person is there against his will and has dreams of his own calling him elsewhere. Is there any way she can convince Crockett to stay in her little backwoods community? And does the attraction between them have any chance of blossoming when Joanna's outlaw father is dead set against his daughter courting a preacher?

Goodreads Summary

This novel's plot and characters are terrific.  From the beginning when Crockett Archer has a big grin on his face because he feels that he's heading toward the work of his life...I liked him - his sense of purpose, his sense of humor, and more.  I felt like laughing out loud when Witemeyer describes the little boy as the "poor lad" who "probably battled for his mother's millinery honor constantly".

Secondary characters always make the story so much better for me, and there are many of them here in the Piney Woods of Texas, I was surprised by so many of the situations in the book – I couldn’t easily predict what would come next.  I loved Joanna's curmudgeonly, cantankerous father whose heart is in the right place - if you can find it.  "Dratted sermonizer!”    “Botheration!"  I laughed a lot...cried too, later in the story.  I don't think I've read Witemeyer's books before, but I will have to go back and see what I've missed.

Undeniably Yours By: Becky Wade

When Meg Cole’s father dies unexpectedly, she becomes the majority shareholder of his oil company and the single inheritor of his fortune. Though Meg is soft-spoken and tenderhearted–more interested in art than in oil–she’s forced to return home to Texas and to Whispering Creek Ranch to take up the reins of her father’s empire.
The last thing she has the patience or the sanity to deal with? Her father’s thoroughbred racehorse farm. She gives its manager, Bo Porter, six months to close the place down.
Bo’s determined to resent the woman who’s decided to rob him of his dream. But instead of anger, Meg evokes within him a profound desire to protect. The more time he spends with her, the more he longs to overcome every obstacle that separates them–her wealth, his unworthiness, her family’s outrage–and earn the right to love her.
But just when Meg begins to realize that Bo might be the one thing on the ranch worth keeping, their fragile bond is viciously broken by a force from Meg’s past. Can their love–and their belief that God can work through every circumstance–survive?

Goodreads Summary

Is it because my niece just recently discovered (and I rediscovered) how much fun country music is?  Pulls at your heart…tells such a story….  Wade really draws great characters.  I was ready to dislike poor little rich girl Meg Cole, but I couldn’t.  Her panic attacks seemed a little “blonde moment” dramatic; however, her sincere and entertaining attempts to quell them were great to read.  Nothing like a Sudoku book, deep breathing…and then OREOs and exercise.  Bo Porter’s urge to protect her makes him a real knight on a white horse.  Luckily, he’s a cowboy! He’s hard-working, handsome, stoic, a family protector, and a true gentleman. He’s a Christian too; after all, as Bo says, “I’m from a small town in Texas.  Can’t think what else I’d be.”  Or, if you’re a more metro liberal…he’s a “gun-toting hick with a backward view of the world.”  The scene where they baby-sit for Jayden together had me giggling.
Secondary characters are terrific.  I love Mr. Son, the un-stereotypical Asian gardener, and how he deigned to be employed by Meg.  Bo’s brother Jake has the same charisma as Bo – but with a dark, angsty side.  Who wouldn’t want to hug Sadie-Jo?  Ex-husband Stephen, as the villain, is completely believable: after the money, selfish, shady, and threatening.
I appreciate Wade’s descriptions of their prayerful talks with God, how they ask Him to help them cope with the difficulties of life.  I also can relate to Wade’s descriptions of the peace Meg feels in Bo’s presence.  I’ve felt that from my husband and from some others…just being with them quiets and calms you.  This Christian romance will appeal to readers who are country people at heart.  Or you might just read it because – as a teen girl who saw the cover said, “Awesome dress! Can I read that next?”

The Promise Box by Tricia Goyer

Every year, young Amish men descend on the cozy little town of West Kootenai, Montana, arriving in the spring to live there for six months and receive “resident” status for the hunting season in the fall. They arrive as bachelors, but go home with brides!
In The Promise Box, the second book of best-selling author Tricia Goyer’s Seven Brides for Seven Bachelors series, Lydia Wyse, a book editor from Seattle who grew up Amish, returns to the small community of West Kootenai to give comfort to her father after her mother’s death. She is drawn back to the familiar Amish ways after finding her mother’s most precious possession, a Promise Box of prayers and scripture. What her publisher sees, though, is an opportunity for a sensational “tell-all” book about the Amish.
Lydia soon finds herself falling in love with Amish bachelor Gideon Hooley. She wants nothing more than to forget her past and look forward to a future as an Amish bride. But will the pain of her childhood---and her potential betrayal of her community---keep her from committing her whole heart?

Goodreads Blurb

Some men come to a small Amish town for a hunting license...and a bride.  When Lydia's mother passes away, Lydia decides that she needs to take a small break from her English life to care for her father.  She doesn't expect to be even remotely attracted to the arriving Amish men.  Gideon isn't the typical Amish man.  With a kind nature and level head, he presents a challenge to Lydia that she cannot overlook.  What happens when an Englisher starts to fall for an Amish man?  Will Lydia decide to stay, go, or find a compromise?

Lydia's character was nice enough. To me, there seemed to be a little (but not much) distinction between her and any of Goyer's other female leads.  I liked her intelligence and sharp wit as well as her ability to stand on her own two feet.  I could easily see why Lydia might fall in love with Gideon.  He has many of the qualities that a marriageable young lady would desire in a husband. I liked reading about Lydia's father and memories from her past as an Amish woman.  Goyer manages to capture my attention and hold it throughout the novel.  This book is recommended to adult readers.

The Offering: A Novel by Angela Hunt

One innocent mistake . . . a lifetime of consequences.

After growing up an only child, Amanda Lisandra wants a big family. But since she and her soldier husband can’t afford to have more children right away, Mandy decides to earn money as a gestational carrier for a childless couple. She loves being pregnant, and while carrying the child, she dreams of having her own son and maybe another daughter. . . .

Just when the nearly perfect pregnancy is about to conclude, unexpected tragedy enters Mandy’s world and leaves her reeling. Devastated by grief, she surrenders the child she was carrying and struggles to regain her emotional equilibrium.
Two years later she studies a photograph of the baby she bore and wonders if the unthinkable has happened—could she have inadvertently given away her own biological child? Over the next few months Mandy struggles to decide between the desires of her grief-stricken heart and what’s best for the little boy she has never known.

Goodreads Summary

This is one of those novels that will make the reader seriously think.  The issues addressed in the book are both interesting and require deep-thought.  Mandy carried another couple's child to help give them  the child they so desperately wanted.  However, she discovers that the child may be her own biological child, twisting the plot.  What would you do in the event that you may have inadvertently birthed your biological child?  Would you try to take the child back?  or would you choose to leave the child with the non-biological parents?

Mandy was an interesting character.  I was very sympathetic to her.  She is in an awkward situation with no straight-forward right answer.  After she endures a great tragedy related to her husband, the child may be all that she has left of him.  I found myself struggling with what decision I would make if I were in Mandy's shoes.  I honestly don't know what I would decide, even after I finished the book.  The other characters all added a little something to the novel.  It was interesting to meet Mandy's husband's family and see how they factored in to the plot.  Overall, this book is recommended to adult readers.

Catch a Falling Star: A Novel by Beth K. Vogt

What does a girl do when life doesn’t go according to her plan? At thirty-six, Kendall Haynes has seen some of her dreams come true. She’s a family physician helping kids with severe allergies and asthma achieve more fulfilling lives—a childhood struggle she knows all too well. But are Kendall’s dreams of having it all—a career, a husband, children—nothing more than a childhood fantasy? God says He knows the plans He has for her—why can’t Kendall figure them out and be content with her life?

Griffin Walker prefers flying solo—both as an Air Force pilot and in his personal life. But a wrong choice and health problems pulled him out of the cockpit. His attempts to get out of “flying a desk” are complicated by his parents’ death—making Griffin the reluctant guardian of his sixteen-year-old brother, Ian. How did his life get so off course? Can he get his life back on track…or has there been a divine plan all along?

Goodreads Summary

Kendall is a doctor with very little time.  She had hoped for a balance in life where she could have a family, job, and picket fence; instead, she has been married to her job.  She can literally hear her biological clock ticking, should she give up or get moving?  Griffin is a pilot with a cavalier attitude and love for fast flight.  When disasters make it impossible for him to return to his job, he must decide whether to give in to life or push back.  The two find each other at interesting crossroads in their lives, will they help each other out and form a strong bond?

Kendall is a dedicated worker who strives to do her best by her patients.  Her kind personality and caring nature make it nearly impossible not to instantly like her.  Griffin is a little more devil-may-care and has many of the characteristics (charisma, good looks, and a healthy dose of confidence).  They are foils to each other's characteristics and I could easily see how they would fit together.  It seems apparent that they could each fulfill each others' needs. The reader will keep his/her fingers crossed for a budding relationship between the two main characters.  This book is perfect to take on a long airplane flight or for a day on the beach.  This book is recommended to adult readers.
