The Anniversary Waltz by Darrel Nelson
At their sixtieth anniversary party, Adam Carlson asks his wife, Elizabeth, for their customary waltz. After the dance they gather the family and share their story—a story of love and courage overcoming adversity and thriving in the face of overwhelming odds.
It’s the summer of 1946, and Adam has just returned from the war to his home in Reunion, Montana. At a town festival he meets Elizabeth Baxter, a young woman going steady with his former high school rival and now influential banker, Nathan Roberts.
When Adam and Elizabeth share a waltz in a deserted pavilion one evening, their feelings begin to grow and they embark on a journey, and a dance, that will last a lifetime.
Goodreads Summary
This debut novel is a sweet historical romance that will have readers teary eyed from beginning to end. World War II has just ended and Adam has returned to his hometown. Rather than being welcomed home by his father, Adam finds his father is unwilling to forgive him for leaving his mother and father to work the farm alone to fight in the war. Now, the farm is being foreclosed on by Adam’s high school rival. Nathan, Adam’s rival, is bossy, demanding and dating Elizabeth Baxter, a woman Adam cannot stay away from. After one dance, it is clear that Adam and Elizabeth were a couple that was meant to be.
This book is great and practically impossible to put down. Some characters seem like real people who I can relate to and cheer for. Other characters, Nate, I hated with unanticipated ferocity. Although a first time author, Nelson was able to create these types of feelings in me as a reader. The Anniversary Waltz will pull at your heart and leave you feeling happy. Not sappy, or overly romantic, but nostalgic and poignant. This is a great read.

Sounds good although I'm not usually a historical fan...might pick it up though.

Not my usual genre but if someone can make you feel that strongly about their characters then it should be worth a read. Thanks for the review.

I am not a big romance reader unless it has some other genre in it like paranormal or mystery etc. but this one sounds interesting!! thanks for the review!

I am not too big on historical reads but this one actually sounds really good! Great review! :)

I have to be in the right mood for hystorical fiction but the fact the it will get my eyes watering kind of catches my attention. I love a good tear jerker every now and again.

Krystal:
Thanks so much for taking the time to read and review The Anniversary Waltz. I'm so glad you enjoyed my novel. I didn't actually intend for Nathan to be so villainous. I even had a chapter later in the novel that showed a different side to him, but my editor suggested I take it out. So I guess that sealed Nathan's fate. There's even a more dislikable character in my next novel. I'll be curious to see what you think of him.

You know what, it is romance like this...the kind that lasts a lifetime that really touches the heart. Yes, raw passion is great, but the true test is, will it last? I'd definitely love to read this book - thank you for introducing me to this book, and your awesome review.

Sounds like a great historical romance! Usually not my think but I like the sound of this one. Coming back from war to find your family mad at you and your high school rival stealing their farm. Sounds like he will be stealing his girlfriend back LOL
