A modern, multi-generational tale of Kendra, the witch from "Snow White," who trains Violet, an ugly, lonely, and heartbroken girl in the 1980s who transforms herself into "the fairest one of all" but still cannot win Greg's heart, and Celine, Greg's daughter with Violet's high school rival, Jennifer.

Goodreads Summary

I wasn't sure I would love this retelling since I tend to always prefer the original, but this book captured my interest and made it impossible to put it down for hours!  I loved how the story was told from different points of view.  The author introduced Violet first; Violet would later become the "evil stepmother."  After some background information and scenes that set the stage for Violet to loathe and despise Jennifer, the woman Greg (the man Violet is in love with) marries, the reader meets Celine.  Celine is Jennifer's daughter and a little girl that Violet does not mind and might even love until the similarities in looks between Celine and Jennifer are stated.  The reader will then read from Goose, a boy of "short stature" who comes to love Celine.

I liked the light-hearted tone of the book and how the author delved into the evil Violet's childhood and how she was bullied.  I thought it was a shame that Greg, the man Violet was so obsessed with, was not really nice to anyone and a bland character.  Celine was a nice girl, but it might have been fun to get to know her a little beyond what was written.  Overall, this book was a fun read and recommended to young adult/teen readers.
