Dead is a Battlefield by Marlene Perez

Thursday, March 1, 2012
Jessica Walsh is starting her freshman year at Nightshade High and trying to forget about the tragic events surrounding her brother’s graduation. She wants to have a normal high school experience. But that’s easier said than done in Nightshade.

When a new boy shows up at school, the girls are infected with a case of seriously creepy crushes. But when their obsession turns to violence, Jessica and her friends start to wonder if there’s more going on than just a little friendly rivalry. Are the smitten girls turning into love zombies?

And Jessica has other worries—like her crush on Dominic Gray, the cute but moody new singer for Side Effects May Vary, and the mysterious tattoo that appeared on her arm one day and lets her know whenever there is trouble brewing. Jessica learns she's a Virago, a woman warrior chosen to fight evil whenever it threatens her hometown. But does a lowly freshman really have what it takes to keep Nightshade safe?

Goodreads Summary

Ready for a new character on the Nightshade scene?  Author Marlene Perez delivers a humorous, exciting book once again.  The reader is introduced to Jessica, a seemingly normal teenage girl.  Jessica notices a creeping tattoo(ish) image on her arm, she isn't quite sure what it is and if she should be worried.  When she meets with Flo and a few other girls, not by choice, she discovers that she is a Virago.  A Virago is a female warrior who is called upon to help when there is evil afoot.  Jessica isn't quite sure about the source of evil, but it is undeniable that there is something off, once again, in Nightshade.

Jessica's character was easy to like.  She was very easy to relate to as well, comes off as a clever, brave, and somewhat sassy teenager.  The secondary characters are fun to get to know, particularly the love interest.  There is a subplot concerning Jessica's growing relationship with Dominic, the reader will be able to look forward to the chance of some romance incorporated in the plot with the mystery and action.  There will be at least one facet of the plot for every reader.

The events were fast-paced, the author always handles the events in an orderly, detailed, and exciting manner.  There are several unexpected scenes and discoveries that will keep the reader guessing.  This book was very hard to put down, many readers will finish within a day or two of picking the book up.  This book is highly recommended to young adult/teen readers.

I read the first two books and really liked them, and hope to read all of them. It'll be interesting to read about new characters.

    Thanks for the review.
