Darkness by Joann I. Martin Sowles

Monday, January 2, 2012
Not long ago, Laney Alexander was living a carefree life, that is, until she was thrown into a world full of creatures only the imagination thought possible. Now, after surviving a terrifying night, Laney and Oliver are lying low at Julz's place, relieved to be in each other's arms once again. But fate seems to have other plans...

Julz is not happy to have visitors in her home and emotions run high. Laney is pushed to her limits as she watches Carter fight for his life and her relationship with Oliver becomes strained as she discovers secrets about Julz that could tear them apart.

As she reaches her boiling point, disaster strikes and her life is shattered. Laney must come to terms with what has unfolded. Will she lose her way and let the darkness consume her or will she find her light in Oliver?

Secrets will be revealed. Hearts will be broken. Lives will be lost. Darkness will fall.

Goodreads Summary

Laney and her potential mate are back for another action-packed, paranormal story.  The reader will dive right into the book within the first couple of pages.  It is recommended that the reader first pick up Laney or risk not knowing quite a few facts from the first book.  Laney is still clever and witty, though she is a little whiny in this book.  Oliver still has that raspy, charismatic voice that will make the reader fall a little bit in love with him.  He is very protective and caring towards Laney.  However, his protective instincts keep her from learning of more than a few pertinent facts.  The reader will react to these characters throughout the book, the mark of a good author.

The action is not so pronounced in this book.  Much more background information is provided to both Laney and the reader, they must sift through the information and decide what to make of it.  The secondary characters are developed more and the reader will have a change to get to know them much better.  A character returns who has the potential to cause a lot of trouble between Laney and Oliver.  The reader will love Laney and Oliver's relationship as it grows more and the question-will Laney become a vampire?-is on the forefront of the readers' mind.

The author writes very well, the reader will not be confused by the characters or events.  The events flow nicely, there are not many awkward transitions.  The reader will have a lot to look forward to with regards to Laney and Oliver from this author!

I thought I wouldn't like this series when I first read Laney. But I enjoyed it and Darkness proves that I made the right choice in starting the Brookehaven Vampires Series.

    Loved your review! :)

Wow, I had not heard of this series but it sounds interesting and I do love vampire stories! Also, seeing as this is book 2 in the series I think it's good that you get to learn more about the main characters and of minor characters as well.

    Thanks for the review!!
