JERRY PINKNEY WINS THE LAURA INGALLS WILDER AWARD AND CORETTA SCOTT KING—VIRGINIA HAMILTON
AWARD FOR LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT
 
(New York, NY) January 11, 2016—The American Library Association (ALA) announced the 2015 Youth Media Awards today in Boston at their annual Midwinter Meeting. Six Random House Children’s Books authors and illustrators received honors.
 
DAVID LEVITHAN is named the recipient of the 2015 Margaret A. Edwards Award, which honors an author, as well as a specific body of his or her work, for significant and lasting contribution to young adult literature. The titles recognized are THE REALM OF POSSIBILITYBOY MEETS BOYLOVE IS THE HIGHER LAWHOW THEY MET AND OTHER STORIESWIDE AWAKE and NICK AND NORAH’S INFINITE PLAYLIST (cowritten with Rachel Cohn). For these titles, Levithan was edited by Nancy Hinkel, former VP & Publishing Director of Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers. Levithan is a New York Times bestselling author, including for his most recent YA novel Another Day, the companion to Every Day, and is an esteemed children’s book editor in New York City.
 
THE UNLIKELY HERO OF ROOM 13B by Teresa Toten (Delacorte Press) receives a Schneider Family Book Award in the teen category. The Schneider is given to books that embody an artistic expression of the disability experience. Filled with moments of both deep emotion and unexpected humor, The Unlikely Hero of Room 13B explores the complexities of living with OCD and offers the prospect of hope, happiness, and healing. It was named an Amazon Best Book of the Year and a Kirkus Reviews Best Teen Book of 2015. Toten’s next young adult novel, Beware That Girl, will release in May 2016Toten is edited by Beverly Horowitz, VP & Publisher, Delacorte Press.
 
EMMANUEL’S DREAM: The True Story of Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah by Laurie Ann Thompson, illustrated by Sean Qualls (Schwartz & Wade Books), receives a Schneider Family Book Award in the picture book category. This inspiring picture book biography tells the story of a disabled West African child who proves that nothing is unachievable by biking 400 miles across Ghana. Emmanuel’s Dream was edited by Anne Schwartz, VP & Publisher, Schwartz & Wade Books, and art directed by Lee Wade, VP & Publisher, Schwartz & Wade Books.
 
WONDERS OF THE INVISIBLE WORLD by Christopher Barzak (Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers) receives a Stonewall Children’s and Young Adult Literature Honor, given to books of exceptional merit relating to the gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgendered experience. A critically acclaimed adult author, Barzak’s debut YA features a small-town teenager who must unravel a family curse before it destroys those he loves. Wonders of the Invisible World was edited by Melanie Cecka Nolan, Associate Publishing Director, Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers.
 
JERRY PINKNEY receives the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award, which honors an author or illustrator whose books, published in the United States, have made, over a period of years, a substantial and lasting contribution to literature for children. Pinkney also receives the Virginia Hamilton Award, which pays tribute to the quality and magnitude of beloved children’s author Virginia Hamilton. Pinkney has been illustrating children’s books since 1964, illustrating over one hundred titles. His books have been translated into sixteen languages and published in fourteen countries, and he has been the recipient of a Caldecott Medal, five Caldecott Honors, and five New York Times Best Illustrated Books. He has received five Coretta Scott King Awards and four Coretta Scott King Honor Awards, and has received numerous awards for his body of work.
