The Bargaining by Carly Anne West

Thursday, February 12, 2015
The fact that neither of her parents wants to deal with her is nothing new to Penny. She’s used to being discussed like a problem, a problem her mother has finally passed on to her father. What she hasn’t gotten used to is her stepmother…especially when she finds out that she’ll have to spend the summer with April in the remote woods of Washington to restore a broken-down old house.

Set deep in a dense forest, the old Carver House is filled with abandoned antique furniture, rich architectural details, and its own chilling past. The only respite Penny can find away from April’s renovations is in Miller, the young guy who runs the local general store. He’s her only chance at a normal, and enjoyable, summer.

But Miller has his own connection to the Carver House, and it’s one that goes beyond the mysterious tapping Penny hears at her window, the handprints she finds smudging the glass panes, and the visions of children who beckon Penny to follow them into the dark woods. Miller’s past just might threaten to become the terror of Penny’s future….

Goodreads Summary

If you're looking for a great blend of horror, slight romance, and a thrilling story then you should grab this book!  Penny's parents had a fairly nasty divorce and she has recently been shuffled from her mom to her dad.  She lost her friend not too long ago and feels partly responsible.  She doesn't feel connected to her step-mom despite her step-mom, April, trying to form a relationship with her.  When April takes on a project to restore a house in a small town, Penny is enlisted to help her out.  Little do the two know that there are mysteries connected to the town and the house and odd thumps-literally-in the night.

I loved Penny's character.  She was sullen and had her pouty moments, but she felt like a real person to me.  I liked how she had a bit of an investigative personality and that she doesn't back down from a challenge.  April had a sunny personality and I found it sweet that she tried so hard to make things fun for Penny.  Miller always had an air of mystery to him and I distrusted him through most of the book.

The book was so fast-paced and had quite a few twists and turns that had me turning the pages far longer into the night than I meant to.   This was a wonderful book and perfect for young adult/teen readers.

POW patriot passes as his untold story of valor and dedication comes to light

Former WWII prisoner of war, Clarence Bramley, passes away the day after the release of 'Unwavering Valor', which details his experiences.
SPRINGVILLE, Utah (Feb. 12, 2015)-In April, 1942, Clarence Bramley was among the more than 60,000 American and Filipino prisoners of war who survived the Bataan Death March. He spent several months aboard a Japanese "hell ship" before finally being relocated to a forced labor camp in Japan where he spent the duration of the war.

As the war drew to a close, the camp was discovered by Allied bombers, who dropped in lifesaving supplies via parachute. On the day before the armistice, Bramley stayed up all night to stitch together an American flag using scraps of colored parachute fabric he had scavenged after the supply drops.

This selfless act of patriotism from a young man who had every reason to be discouraged, fearful, and bitter, is a remarkable story of American resilience that speaks to our beliefs in the principles of freedom, hope, and justice.

The morning of February 10, 2015, Clarence Bramley passed away, one day after the book detailing his inspiring experiences, "Unwavering Valor," was released. As part of "The Greatest Generation," Bramley's struggle as a POW is an interesting case study into understanding the uniquely American values that helped define our country and the world.
About 'Unwavering Valor'
Researched and written by retired judge William T. Garner, "Unwavering Valor" details the harrowing experiences of Clarence Bramley and the patriotism and belief that kept him alive. Through the Bataan Death March, prison camps in the Philippines and Taiwan, months aboard a Japanese hell ship, and years imprisoned in a forced labor camp in Kosaka, Japan, Clarence Bramley never gave up.

Now his powerful, gripping true story of survival and hope comes to light in this fascinating read. Guaranteed to remind you to have faith in yourself, in your country, and in the values for which it stands.

H.A.L.F.: The Deep Beneath by Natalie Wright: Promo and Giveaway!

Tuesday, February 10, 2015
Book Description:

H.A.L.F. 9 has taken his first breath of desert air and his first steps in the human world. Created to be a weapon, he proved too powerful for his makers and has lived a sedated life hidden from humans. But he has escaped the underground lab he called home, and the sedation has worn off. He has never been more alive. More powerful. Or more deadly.

Erika Holt longs to ride her motorcycle east until pavement gives way to shore. She bides her time until graduation when she’ll escape the trailer she shares with her alcoholic mother and memories of her dead father. But a typical night in the desert with friends thrusts Erika into a situation more dangerous than she ever imagined.

Circumstances push the two together, and each must make a fateful choice. Will Erika assist H.A.L.F. 9 in his escape despite her “don’t get involved” rule? And will H.A.L.F. 9 let Erika live even though he was trained to kill?

The two may need to forget their rules and training and if either is to survive the dangers of the deep beneath them.

ERIKA HOLT: High school senior Erika Holt has lived in hot, dusty Ajo (pronounced Ah-HO), Arizona her whole life. And she can’t wait to get out. Every time Erika gets on her motorcycle she imagines driving east until pavement meets sand. She doesn’t want anything, not even her love for Jack Wilson, to stand in the way of her exit plans.

There’s just one little problem. Something big is brewing in the desert. Something Erika and her friends know nothing about. They may well wish they’d spent their Saturday night at home rather than cruising in the desert.

JACK WILSON: Carefree, guitar-playing poet Jack Wilson is new to Ajo. Jack began the summer as Erika's friend and ended it by falling in love with her. As soon as the three little words "I love you" left his mouth, Erika pulled back from him. But Jack's a patient guy, willing to hold back in the 'just friends' zone until he finds a way to convince Erika that she can't live without him.

Jack would follow Erika to the ends of the Earth. But will he follow her farther than that?

[Chace Crawford as Ian Frew]

IAN FREW: Ajo High School's star quarterback and the hottest guy in the senior class, Ian Frew is Erika's best friend. Soon he'll be fighting for more than just points on the gridiron. But will the dangers that lie ahead force a wedge between Ian and his oldest friend?

H.A.L.F. 9, aka TEX: H.A.L.F. 9 was created to be the government's secret weapon. 9 has lived his entire life in a secret government lab, nearly a mile underground. He has never breathed fresh, desert air. He has never run except for on a treadmill. And he has never felt the sun on his skin.

Until now.

He is naive. He is dangerous. And he has escaped.

COMMANDER LILLY STURGIS: Commander Sturgis is our last hope. She and her creations stand between salvation and total annihilation. At least that's the way she sees it. When they need to win a battle, they call a general. When they need to win a war, they call her.

ALECTO: Who is she? Where did she come from? And what are her intentions?

THE GREYS: When their ship crashed in the New Mexico desert back in 1947, more was recovered than just debris. In an above top secret project, scientists have labored for years to create a new species: An alien-human hybrid. And in 1998 they succeeded. But why were H.A.L.F. 9's alien cousins here on Earth in the first place?

Excerpt

“It is time.” Her voice purred like a kitten, but Indiana suspected she was really a feral animal on the inside. “For what?” Her voice was raspy, hesitant and unsure if she really wanted to know the answer. Somewhere, deep inside, she suspected she already knew. “Just remember I’m doing this for us,” Sam whispered into her ear. “So we can be together forever.” Before Indiana could question him further, she felt a flurry of hands over her body. Indiana tried to open her eyes, but a warm hand reached up and carefully covered them. Indiana was bitten – hard, and she groaned in pleasure. Shocked by her unexpected display, she clutched her hands outwards. Feeling the writhe of skin on skin, she tried to pull herself free. The tickle of fingers across her neck and down her spine calmed her with their warm familiarity. “It’s okay, Indiana.” The feathery words danced across her skin, warm like a summer breeze. She stilled and let Sam’s fingers intertwine with her own, relieved by his simple touch. Time seemed to move forward and Indiana was presented with brief snippets of fleeting images; Camilla biting Sam, biting her. Indiana enjoying the pain of Camilla’s sharp teeth as they gnashed at her neck, her thighs and her wrist. The flurry of skin and hands and teeth as they writhed together in the height of passion. Pale hands slithered over her own luminescent skin, then Sam’s darker skin brushed against her own, warming her and protecting her but against what she was unsure. Then Camilla poised over Sam, a knife in her hand. A flash of blood as it splayed out from a gaping neck wound. Indiana’s involuntary gasp and then choking sob at the sight of the cavernous hole. Hungry sucking as Camilla drank her fill. A warm hand, its fingers still laced through hers, slowing turning ice cold.
