Tuesday, July 15, 2014

From New York Times bestselling author Keri Arthur comes a brand new series featuring heroine Emberly Pearson—a phoenix capable of taking on human form, and cursed with the ability to foresee death…

Emberly has spent a good number of her many lives trying to save humans. So when her prophetic dreams reveal the death of Sam, a man she once loved, she does everything in her power to prevent that from happening. But in saving his life, she gets more than she bargained for.

Sam is working undercover for the Paranormal Investigations Team, and those who are trying to murder him are actually humans infected by a plague-like virus, the Crimson Death—a by-product of a failed government experiment that attempted to identify the enzymes that make vampires immortal. Now, all those infected must be eliminated.

But when Emberly’s boss is murdered and his irreplaceable research stolen, she needs to find the guilty party before she goes down in flames…

SCAN BLOG POST
Walter Jury divulges his inspiration for SCAN:
Grantland.com is a site I often frequent for pop culture news.  They (including writer Andy Greenwald, of whom I'm a big fan) did a fantastic autopsy on the failure of COWBOYS & ALIENS to achieve success at the box office several summers ago.  After reading that, and pondering the film, an idea popped into my head—what if aliens landed on Earth prior to the advent of modern technology, and they simply assimilated into our human species with nary a whisper of their existence?
From there, I began to imagine a boy who is raised and strictly trained by one of the families who know about this alien landing, but he is yet to be informed about his important family legacy.  The story came together by melding the overall log line of aliens landing on earth before humans had the technology to realize what had happened and this young man's journey to learning about it.
One of my close friends and my closest colleague at work is uber-agent Joanna Volpe, who sold the DIVERGENT series, amongst many other literary treasures.  I pitched this world and general concept to Joanna, who told me she thought it was high-concept, timely and would make a great book.  I then pulled out the laptop in my spare time and began to work on what would ultimately end up being the book, SCAN!
SCAN Summary:
Tate and his father don’t exactly get along. As Tate sees it, his father has unreasonably high expectations for Tate to be the best—at everything. Tate finally learns what he’s being prepared for when he steals one of his dad’s odd tech inventions and mercenaries ambush his school, killing his father and sending Tate on the run from aliens who look just like humans.
All Tate knows—like how to make weapons out of oranges and lighter fluid—may not be enough to save him as he’s plunged into a secret interspecies conflict that’s been going on for centuries. Aided only by his girlfriend and his estranged mother, with powerful enemies closing in on all sides, Tate races to puzzle out the secret behind his father’s invention and why so many are willing to kill for it.

THE MAGICIAN’S LAND

By Lev Grossman

AN INDIE NEXT PICK FOR AUGUST 2014

As far as trilogies are concerned, this is the book and story that definitely finishes a three book story with a proper ending. All the questions that you were wondering from the first two are answered and there is good resolution to the story as a whole. This book is told from two different points of view, and throughout the book you learn how they eventually converge and line up as one. One is with Quentin and his journey with a new character and the other is with Eliot and Janet as they search Fillory for the reasons that their magic is having issues.

I loved the element of magic in this book. I know it is a book on this sort of thing, however it is presented in such an awesome way and the visuals you get from the text are just amazing. One thing that did bother me is the idea presented that Quentin is a great upstanding character. If you read into the section of the story dealing with the briefcase you will see first hand that this is not the case. Another good thing about this book, is the realism that is intertwined in with the magic elements. It is presented tastefully and doesn't get so ridiculous that it is unbelievable. Its a fun book and a great ending to a trilogy that all should read.

“Deeply satisfying finale to the best-selling fantasy trilogy… Grossman captures the magic of fantasy books cherished in youth and repurposes it to decidedly adult ends… The essence of being a magician, as Quentin learns to define it, could easily serve as a thumbnail description of Grossman’s art: ‘the power to enchant the world.’” — Kirkus Reviews (Starred Review)

“[THE MAGICIAN’S LAND] is endlessly fascinating and always proceeds apace…This is an absolutely brilliant fantasy filled with memorable characters—old and new—and prodigious feats of imagination. At one point, Quentin muses, ‘Magic and books: there aren’t many things more important than that.’ THE MAGICIAN'S LAND is ineffable proof of that claim.
Fantasy fans will rejoice at its publication.”
— Booklist (Starred Review)

“[T]his series taken as a whole brings new life and energy to the fantasy genre.”
Library Journal

“An elegantly written third act to Quentin’s bildungsroman…Fans of the trilogy will be pleased.”
Publishers Weekly

“Lev Grossman has conjured a rare creature: a trilogy that simply gets better and better as it goes along. THE MAGICIAN’S LAND is sumptuous and surprising yet deliciously familiar…Literary perfection for those of us who grew up testing the structural integrity of the backs of wardrobes.”
Erin Morgenstern, author of The Night Circus

Viking is thrilled to release THE MAGICIAN’S LAND, the spectacular conclusion to Lev Grossman’s New York Times bestselling Magicians trilogy (On-sale: August 5, 2014; 978-0-670-01567-2; $27.95).

The trilogy opened with The Magicians which The New Yorker called “a darkly cunning story about the power of imagination itself…An unexpectedly moving coming-of-age story.” NPR called the sequel The Magician King “a spellbinding stereograph, a literary adventure novel that is also about privilege, power and the limits of being human.”   Legions of fans now await THE MAGICIAN’S LAND, a novel full of the subversive brilliance that has put Grossman at the forefront of modern fantasy, which will bring theMagicians trilogy to a shattering, triumphant conclusion.

Familiar faces return alongside new characters in THE MAGICIAN’S LAND. After being booted unceremoniously from Fillory, Quentin Coldwater returns to his alma mater, the Brakebills Preparatory College of Magic, to make a new life as a teacher—even as Eliot and Janet race to save Fillory itself from a spectacular apocalypse. The demons of Quentin's past catch up to him and send him on a crooked quest through magic's seedy underworld, back to old haunts, old friends and old enemies. He discovers a powerful spell that would create a new magical land, but he must face his fears, and fix the errors of his past, before he can find the power to save the future.

THE MAGICIAN’S LAND is a tale of love and redemption—the story of a boy becoming a man, an apprentice becoming a master, and a broken land finally becoming whole.  Old readers will devour the rich and riveting final book, and the completed arc will welcome newcomers who can binge-read the series in full.

THE BOOK OF LIFE is the highly-anticipated final installment of the bestselling All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness (Viking; On-sale: July 15, 2014; $28.95). The trilogy began with A Discovery of Witches which People magazine called, “A wonderfully imaginative grown-up fantasy with all the magic of Harry Potter or Twilight”. The sequel Shadow of Night debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list, and the Miami Herald called it, “Enchanting, engrossing and as impossible to put down as its predecessor...a perfect blend of fantasy, history and romance.” In total, over one million copies have been sold in the States with publications following in 38 countries, leaving legions of fans eagerly awaiting THE BOOK OF LIFE, the satisfying conclusion to this superbly written series.

THE BOOK OF LIFE picks up right where Shadow of Night left off.  After traveling through time, historian and witch Diana Bishop and vampire scientist Matthew Clairmont return to the present to continue their hunt for the magical alchemical manuscript, Ashmole 782, otherwise known as the Book of Life.   At Matthew’s ancestral home at Sept-Tours, they reunite with the cast of characters from A Discovery of Witches—with one significant exception—ready to face old enemies. But the real threat to their future has yet to be revealed, and when it is, the search for the Book of Life and its missing pages takes on even more urgency. In the trilogy’s final volume, Harkness deepens her themes of power and forbidden passion, family and caring, past deeds and their present consequences. In ancestral homes and university laboratories, using ancient knowledge and modern science, from the hills of the Auvergne to the palaces of Venice and beyond, the couple at last learn what the witches discovered so many centuries ago.
