Skylar wants a different life than what most girls in her small town end up with.  She works at a boring job that doesn't earn her much, but helps motivate her to save enough to go to art school.  Her best friend has already had a baby and seems stuck as a single, struggling mom.  When Josh walks into the motel Skylar works at she doesn't know quite what to think.  Josh no longer has his leg courtesy of the War in Afghanistan.  He is bitter and withdrawn.  The two begin as acquaintances, but have the chance to become much more to each other.

I thought Skylar's character was so-so.  She has a chip on her shoulder, but she also has the drive to do something with her life-which I admire.  Josh could definitely be more polite or kind, but I understand that attitudes change when you lose your leg in a war.  I liked how the author portrayed these two characters as helping each other and needing each other for different reasons.  This book is a good reads for young adult/teens.
