The Rules by Stacey Kade

Saturday, July 13, 2013

1. Never trust anyone.

2. Remember they are always searching.

3. Don’t get involved.

4. Keep your head down.

5. Don’t fall in love.

Five simple rules. Ariane Tucker has followed them since the night she escaped from the genetics lab where she was created, the result of combining human and extraterrestrial DNA. Ariane’s survival—and that of her adoptive father—depends on her ability to blend in among the full-blooded humans in a small Wisconsin town, to hide in plain sight at her high school from those who seek to recover their lost (and expensive) “project.”

But when a cruel prank at school goes awry, it puts her in the path of Zane Bradshaw, the police chief’s son and someone who sees too much. Someone who really sees her. After years of trying to be invisible, Ariane finds the attention frightening—and utterly intoxicating. Suddenly, nothing is simple anymore, especially not the rules…

Goodreads Blurb

Ariane Tucker’s life is governed by five rules that have been ingrained in her mind from the time her father saved her from the lab.  Ariane Tucker is not the biological child of her father, however.  Ariane Tucker is actually dead and the girl living under her name is not fully human.  “Ariane Tucker” is actually only half human.  The other half of Ariane’s genes are extraterrestrial.  Leading a normal life with her adoptive father is the only way she can be safe.  The people who want to find her are powerful and desire to use Ariane as a weapon.  Ariane seems to have lost her potentially dangerous abilities until one day at school when her friend is targeted by bullies.  No one appears to have noticed her slip, but Zane Bradshaw, one of the bullies.  Zane is different than the other members of the cruel clique and notices Ariane’s sometimes eccentric behavior.  Their initial attraction could be more than friendship and a plot to take down the reigning bully-queen of the high school, but what if the alliance exposes the secrets Ariane and her father have worked so hard to hide?
Ariane is a great heroine with strong values and a faithful heart.  Although Mark Tucker is not her biological father, Ariane loves him as though he was.  Ariane is loyal to a fault  and stands by undeserving friends even if it endangers her own welfare.  Zane lacks many of Ariane’s noble characteristics, but is dependable when it counts.  He has lived a hard life and has many rough edges.  Stacey Kade’s creative plot and characters will be loved by fans of light science fiction and adventure.  Readers that like rooting for strong heroes will love The Rules
