Fuse by Julianna Baggott: Interview and Giveaway

Thursday, February 21, 2013

When the world ended, those who dwelled within the Dome were safe. Inside their glass world the Pures live on unscarred, while those outside—the Wretches—struggle to survive amidst the smoke and ash.

Believing his mother was living among the Wretches, Partridge escaped from the Dome to find her. Determined to regain control over his son, Willux, the leader of the Pures, unleashes a violent new attack on the Wretches. It’s up to Pressia Belze, a young woman with her own mysterious past, to decode a set of cryptic clues from the past to set the Wretches free.

An epic quest that sweeps readers into a world of beautiful brutality, Fusecontinues the story of two people fighting to save their futures—and change the fate of the world.

Goodreads Summary

1. Your world-building is phenomenal, how did you create the world in Fuse?

In PURE, book I in THE PURE TRILOGY, I did a lot of the world-building -- ash, fusings, Beasts, Dusts, the distant Dome -- so in FUSE, book II, I had the opportunity to stretch the canvas, geographically and visually. I also had time to delve back into the psychologically twisted world of the Dome -- a true delight.

2. Is there any character(s) that you feel more attached to then any other, why?

Of course I love my main characters, but there are those smaller characters, like Iralene and Arvin Weed, who show up in FUSE and take hold. Both are so untrustworthy and yet also vulnerable, I can't help but love writing about them. Their motivations are always hidden and unexpected.

3. Can you give us a sneak peak of what to expect in Fuse?

In addition to the above, I'll say that both love stories get more complex and messier. I've enjoyed mining these characters -- heart-wise -- and their stories certainly reveal a larger look at the question of what endures the apocalypse.

4. Are you currently working on any other books?

BURN, book III in THE PURE TRILOGY, comes out one year from this month. So I am still immersed (drowning?) in this world ...

  1. I know it's only the 2nd book in the series, but I'm so mad that these characters have had to deal with the scariest and most dangerous tasks of their lives and it's all because of something that could totally happen in real life. I want a happy ending for Pressia and Bradwell and Partridge and Lyda!! Is that so much to ask?

    Thanks for this giveaway!

I haven't read Pure yet but this series sounds riveting. Creative, unique and well developed worlds is one of the aspects that draws me to SciFi and Fantasy. I am always mesmerized by worlds that are so different from our own, from mundane reality, the social, political, and personal struggles that it takes to navigate.

  1. Pure is on my shelf, unread. I really have to read it and quickly. Fuse sounds awesome. And I LOVE the cover!

  1. This is my first time hearing about the series. I'll admit, the cover caught my attention.

  1. I haven't actually read Pure yet, so I'm really looking forward to immersing (drowning? hehe) myself in the world you discussed.

The author says she focuses on the "psychologically twisted world of the Dome" and that sounds fascinating! Thanks for this amazing giveaway! This book sounds great and I would love to win it!

The cover looks majestic, thanks for the post! :)

  1. The book is very descriptive, and explains the plausability of this without becoming too bogged down in detail. One teen escapes the dome looking for his mother, who he believes didn't make it into the dome. After the escape, the author takes you on a roller coaster ride of love, war, and survival, where friends become enemies and vice-versa.

I felt the description was fantastic, and this book held my attention, and will haunt me for some time to come.
