Shattered by Dani Pettrey

Piper’s brother, Reef, comes home from snowboarding covered in blood. His past girlfriend has been murdered and leads point to him. Piper doesn’t believe Reef is a killer, so she launches an investigation on her own with the help of deputy Landon who has been a friend of the family for many years. He also believes there is more than the eye can see. The mystery continues with romantic tension and a little bit of action.

I loved this book! The characters are all three-dimensional, I felt like everyone in the book had a purpose and wasn’t stuck in there just because Pettrey could stick them in. The romantic tension was perfect, it wasn’t oozing with “get it over with!”. Both of the main characters are smart, I cheered them on every action they made. That’s rare now-a-days. I usually find characters making stupid decisions that are OBVIOUSLY going to get them in trouble, but they make it anyway to make the plot longer. Gag. This time, everyone had their heads on straight. The plotline was interesting and kept me engaged. I have to say that sometimes I skimmed paragraphs. Not many, but there were moments of “Okay, I get it!”. Otherwise, this book is amazing and I recommend it. I didn’t read the first one and completely understood this so don’t worry about needing to read the first in the series.

4 Stars
