A heart-pounding love story that grips like a riptide, and doesn’t let go…
Fifteen-year old Sam has moved from the big city to the coast – stuck there with his mum and sister on the edge of nowhere.
Then he meets beautiful but damaged surfer-girl Jade. Soon he’s in love with her, and with surfing itself. But Jade is driven by an obsession: finding and riding a legendary huge wave no one has ever ridden.
As the weeks wear on, their relationship barrels forward with the force of a deep-water wave – into a storm, to danger … and to heartbreak.
Goodreads Summary
My favorite part of this book was Sam telling the romance aspect from his point of view. There are not a lot of books that have that male perspective. I enjoyed getting to know Sam's character. His father drowned, but Sam has decided to surf. He meets Jade along the way and falls into love and a friendship (it's better to have both, isn't it?). The story follows both Sam as he grows up and his developing romance. I sort of guessed where the book was going with the ending, but it wasn't disappointing...just a little bittersweet.
Sam's character was easy to relate to. He's human and he definitely has flaws. Jade was a little more difficult for me to get used to. She seemed more closed off (of course, she's meant to be portrayed as damaged). I really liked the two of them together. The secondary characters played their parts nicely and helped move the plot along. Overall, this would be an intriguing-if not heart-rending-read for young adult/teen readers.
