The Rogue Not Taken by Sarah MacLean: Review and Giveaway!

LADY SOPHIE'S SOCIETY SPLASH

The youngest of the infamous Talbot sisters scandalized society at the Liverpool Summer Soiree, striking her sister’s notoriously philandering husband and landing him backside-first in a goldfish pond. And we thought Sophie was the quiet one…

When she finds herself the target of very public aristocratic scorn, Sophie Talbot does what she must to escape the city and its judgment—she flees on the back of a carriage, vowing never to return to London…or to society. But the carriage isn’t saving her from ruin. It’s filled with it.

ROYAL ROGUE'S REIGN OF RAVISHMENT!

The Marquess of Eversley was espied descending a rose trellis—escaping an irate Earl and his once-future countess. No lady is safe from Eversley’s Engagement Ending Escapades!

Kingscote, the Marquess of Eversley, has never met a woman he couldn’t charm, a quality that results in a reputation far worse than the truth, a furious summons home, and a long, boring trip to the Scottish border. When King discovers stowaway Sophie, however, the trip becomes anything but boring.

WAR? OR MORE?

He thinks she’s trying to trick him into marriage. She wouldn’t have him if he were the last man on earth. But carriages bring close quarters, dark secrets, and unbearable temptation, and suddenly opposites are altogether too attractive…

Goodreads Summary

Looking for a sweet romance?  Sophie and King do not have the best first impressions of each other.  Sophie was a hideaway on his carriage and King was worried that she was trying to force him into marrying her.  Of course, the two could not be more wrong about each other.  Sophie has no interest in him or London.  She wants to escape and get away!  King prides himself on his charm and charisma, but can he convince the brassy Sophie to stick around?

Sophie was a fun character.  Her dialogue and scenes were often humorous and it didn't take long for me to really like her.  I felt bad for her current scandalous circumstance and would have done a lot of the same things she did to get away.  King was a little too arrogant for me, at first.  However, his good looks and warming up to Sophie won me over.  The plot and structure of the book were fairly typical of the romance genre, but I like this author's take on romance!  This book would be a fun read for adult romance readers.

Lady Sophie’s Society Splash

When Sophie, the least interesting of the Talbot sisters, lands her philandering brother-in-law backside-first in a goldfish pond in front of all society, she becomes the target of very public aristocratic scorn. Her only choice is to flee London, vowing to start a new life far from the aristocracy. Unfortunately, the carriage in which she stows away isn’t saving her from ruin . . . it’s filled with it.

Rogue’s Reign of Ravishment!

Kingscote, “King,” the Marquess of Eversley, has never met a woman he couldn’t charm, resulting in a reputation far worse than the truth, a general sense that he’s more pretty face than proper gentleman, and an irate summons home to the Scottish border. When King discovers stowaway Sophie, however, the journey becomes anything but boring.

(Being shot on the Great North Road isn't exactly a thing people expect to happen, and Lady Sophie Talbot finds herself in the rooms above The Warbling Wren pub, under the welcome care of a rather mad doctor and the watchful eye of the rather infuriating (and infuriatingly handsome) Kingscote, Marquess of Eversley. There are worse things, she supposes. Or are there? Not for King.)

“If you want a bath, you’ll have to accept my help,” he said.

She pursed her lips at that, her gaze settling longingly on the steaming bath. “You mustn’t look.”

“I wouldn’t dream of it.” It might have been the most obvious lie he’d ever told.

Somehow, she believed it, nodding and throwing back the coverlet to step out of the bed. She came to her feet, the top of her head at his chin, and he resisted the urge to help her across the room. “How do you feel?” he asked, hearing the gravel in his words. He cleared his throat.

“As though I’ve been shot, I’d imagine.”

He raised a brow. “Clever. There's food when you’ve bathed." The words summoned a low growl from her, and her hands flew to her stomach. Her cheeks turned red, and he smiled. “I take it you are hungry.”

“It seems so,” she said.

“Food after the bath. And then sleep.”

She met his gaze. “You’re very domineering.”

“It’s a particular talent.”

“What with you being called King.”

“Name is destiny.”

She moved past him to the high copper bathtub. He resumed his place against the wall, arms crossed, watching her carefully as she reached down, her long fingers trailing in the hot water as she sighed her anticipation. The sound was like gunfire in the room—pure, unadulterated pleasure. It was delicious.

King stiffened. He was not interested in the lady’s pleasure.

If only someone would tell his body that.

For eighteen-year-old Gideon Blake, nothing but death can keep him from achieving his goal of becoming a U.S. Army Ranger. As it turns out, it does.

Recovering from the accident that most definitely killed him, Gideon finds himself with strange new powers and a bizarre cuff he can't remove. His death has brought to life his real destiny. He has become War, one of the legendary four horsemen of the apocalypse.

Over the coming weeks, he and the other horsemen--Conquest, Famine, and Death--are brought together by a beautiful but frustratingly secretive girl to help save humanity from an ancient evil on the emergence.

They fail.

Now--bound, bloodied, and drugged--Gideon is interrogated by the authorities about his role in a battle that has become an international incident. If he stands any chance of saving his friends and the girl he's fallen for--not to mention all of humankind--he needs to convince the skeptical government officials the world is in imminent danger.

But will anyone believe him?

Goodreads Summary

The four horsemen of the apocalypse ride in a different story of modern times involving a man attempting to enter U.S. Army Ranger School. We have Gideon, a very strong young man that has high aspirations for his newly budding military career. He is a humanly flawed in all the right ways but still a good enough guy to be likable. He is also one of the four horsemen that ride for the protection of mankind and they are all are under skeptical watch of the government.

A big part of a majority of the book is dedicated to plot setup and story that leads to the sequel of this book. We learn about the awesome characters, and the out of this world horses that are part of the secret, world saving crew. The last part of the book is where things get really crazy, and it is worth the long buildup that you have to read through to get there. The author does an amazing job with making the characters believable as people while giving them unbelievable powers that are capable of helping and hurting in many ways. This book is definitely worth the read and is action packed with a great story to back it up.

Until We Meet Again by Renee Collins

They exist in two different centuries, but their love defies time

Cassandra craves drama and adventure, so the last thing she wants is to spend her summer marooned with her mother and stepfather in a snooty Massachusetts shore town. But when a dreamy stranger shows up on their private beach claiming it's his own—and that the year is 1925—she is swept into a mystery a hundred years in the making.

As she searches for answers in the present, Cassandra discovers a truth that puts their growing love—and Lawrence's life—into jeopardy. Desperate to save him, Cassandra must find a way to change history…or risk losing Lawrence forever.

Goodreads Summary

The pretty cover sucked me in.  Cassandra is from present day and Lawrence is from 1925.  On a day at the beach, Cassandra discovers that the beach is a special place that allows her to interact with people-Lawrence in particular-from 1925.  She is a drama queen-one of her most agitating and annoying traits.  I hated how she was a bit ridiculous towards her parents and had moments of needing to be the center of attention.  Lawrence was a standard love interest.  He almost overdid it though.  At times, the romance felt forced and a bit of a farce.  There were definitely cheesy bits.  I didn't always feel like Cassandra and Lawrence were 100% in love.

I did like the story and the idea of catching glimpses from the past by going to certain places. I would love to be Cassandra in that case and I don't think she truly appreciated that ability.  Overall, the book was an OK read and I did enjoy certain parts.  Romance readers of the young adult/teen sector would likely appreciate this book.
