Black Diamond by Ali Dean: Cover Reveal!

Thursday, December 10, 2015

Synopsis

It’s not a place for the weak.
No one here tolerates wimps.
If you can’t handle it, leave.
Welcome to Stark Springs, Colorado, home to the most talented young athletes in the world.
When Roxie Slade snaps into a pair of skis, there’s no one on Sugarville Mountain in Vermont who can keep up with her. Not even the boys. Still, Roxie was shocked when she received a scholarship to Stark Springs Academy, a boarding school that churns out Olympians in each graduating class. Entering as a high school junior, Roxie can’t wait to learn from renowned coaches and train with the fastest ski racers from all over the globe.  But upon arrival, Roxie discovers that Stark Springs lives under its own set of rules, and it appears one boy plays dictator.
Ryker Black is not friendly and Roxie cannot fathom why everyone wants to be his friend. Sure, he’s gorgeous and rides a snowboard like it’s his fifth limb, but he’s cold, ruthless, and holds way too much power over the Stark Springs population. Roxie won’t put up with it. She’s here to train, and she doesn’t care about impressing anyone off the slopes. The only problem? Ryker Black doesn’t permit defiance. Not without consequences.

RAQIYAH MAYS
The Man Curse (Nov. 16; Pocket Star / Karen Hunter EBook)
Fiction / African American / Contemporary Women

Interview with Ebony
A Little Respect & Romance | African American Fiction (and More) “VERDICT There’s a lot to like about this ebook original. Meena has a good heart but manages to make lousy decisions with men, a problem that will have many female readers nodding in agreement. Making her fiction debut with a novel that is equally raw, profane, and touching, Mays is a promising author to watch.”
—Library Journal

ADRIAN PHOENIX
Thinning the Herd (Jan. 4)
Fiction / Fantasy / Urban

Uproariously funny urban fantasy.”
—Publishers Weekly
“It was fun, it was ridiculous, it was funny, it was, at times, even epic in a glorious, over the top action movie kind of way, it was cartoony and yes it was often puerile. And I enjoyed it.”
Fangs for the Fantasy

GABRA ZACKMAN
Double Down (Jan. 11) is book 3 in The Bod Squad series
Fiction / Romance / Contemporary

Game On is a thrilling romantic caper filled with double crosses, gadgets, and just the right amount of heat…Zackman’s debut mixes romance, pop culture, and espionage into a page-turner that plays with expectations. Readers will find a fast-paced story that is equal parts action and romance.”
—Library Journal

L.J. OLIVER
The Humbug Murders: An Ebenezer Scrooge Mystery
Fiction / Mystery & Detective / Historical

“Houses of ill fame, naughty noblemen, mutilation and murder, opium dens, conspiracies, blackmail, dim-witted coppers, and a cast that includes, among others, Fagin, the Artful Dodger, Mr. Pickwick, Ebenezer Scrooge, and Charles Dickens himself—it's all here in Oliver's tale set during the run-up to Christmas, 1833…Oliver includes enough action and sufficient twists and turns to provide some fun by the fireside, accompanied, perhaps, by a nice glass of Madeira.”

—Publishers Weekly
VERDICT: This series launch from Oliver is a gritty period mystery that features clever appearances by Dickens and several of his characters.”

Bloodcraft by Amalie Howard: Excerpt and Promo!

Tuesday, December 8, 2015

All magic has its price, and no one knows that better than Victoria Warrick. Gifted with a centuries-old blood curse, Tori has finally learned to master her blood’s demands and has emerged triumphant with Christian Devereux, a vampire overlord, at her side.

But the worst is yet to come …

In the infamous City of Lights, home to both the Witch Clans and the Vampire Council, Tori enrolls at the exclusive Belles Fontaines school in Paris, where she is faced with a devastating choice: choose Christian and be an outcast, or choose the coven and secure her place with the witches.

When the fate of the supernatural world is targeted by a sinister new threat, Christian and Victoria must unite their two warring species to defeat it. Their bond will be tested, twisted, and sorely weakened, and Tori will find herself in uncharted territory—a dangerous place to be when her blood’s magic has its own dark agenda.

But to save them all, she may have no choice but to invoke its deadly power.

Goodreads Summary

EXCERPT 1

Lucian knew that he was playing a dangerous game, but he’d always had a special gift for understanding what drove people. The lust for power was the same, no matter the species, and it was the one commonality that bound them across worlds. The basis of a plan formed in his head. He’d help the warlocks in return for amnesty and would convince them of his loyalty. He would give dogs his allegiance if it furthered his own cause—he wanted to eliminate the Council and assume the mantle of their leader. Lucian was a brilliant strategist, more so when his life hung in the balance. He’d sought a witch to win over to his side and, instead, he’d found a coven of warlocks who were playing both sides for their own endgame. Their goals were the same.
Only the rules had changed.
And Lucian was, if anything, a master opportunist.
He approached the warlock, his head held high with no fear in his expression or demeanor. The snake hissed at him, but Lucian ignored it. He raised an eyebrow.
“Are we going or not?” he said, his voice dripping with purposeful, barely veiled contempt. Arrogance would be the key to this performance. It implied strength and a disdain for death. Only the weak were afraid and displaying fear would be his downfall.
The warlock’s eyes narrowed, but he grasped Lucian’s shoulder. His smile was not encouraging. “Transeo.”

INTERNATIONAL TUMBLR SENSATION EMILY TRUNKO TO PUBLISH TWO BOOKS WITH CROWN BOOKS FOR YOUNG READERS

Monday, December 7, 2015
Dear My Blank and The Last Message Received, based on Tumblrs of the same name, to be released in the U.S. in 2016

New York, NY, December 7, 2015—Crown Books for Young Readers, an imprint of Random House Children’s Books, has acquired and will publish DEAR MY BLANK and THE LAST MESSAGE RECEIVED, book projects based on the popular Tumblrs of the same name, created by fifteen-year-old Emily Trunko. The two-book deal for U.S. rights was negotiated by Emily Easton, Executive Editor, Crown Books for Young Readers, with Heather Flaherty at The Bent Agency on behalf of Emily Trunko, and was announced today by Phoebe Yeh, Vice President and Publishing Director of Crown.

Trunko’s Dear My Blank Tumblr (dearmyblank.tumblr.com) launched in March 2015 and showcases anonymous letters that people never intend to, or don’t have the courage to, send—ranging in length from a single sentence to thousands of words, and covering a range of topics and emotions from heartbreak, unrequited love, betrayal, loss, self-awareness, courage, and pride. Over 20,000 anonymous letters from people of all ages have been submitted to the Tumblr, and about 100 new letters arrive every day. The site received 34,000 new notes/comments last month alone.

Cosmopolitan calls the Tumblr “an addictive site full of strangers’ secrets,” Distractify says it is “a safe haven for hundreds of letters that will never be sent,” and Hello Giggles raves that Dear My Blank is “Tumblr’s newest obsession.”

Upon the recent launch of her second Tumblr, The Last Message Received (thelastmessagereceived.tumblr.com), Trunko gained 40,000 followers in just three weeks, with nearly 5,000 messages coming in the last two weeks. The Tumblr showcases highs and lows of the human condition, sharing the last messages people received from someone significant in their lives—death, breakup, friendship ending, family fights, etc. Some posts are screenshots of a last text exchange, along with a note giving the background behind the texts.

The two books to be published by Crown, DEAR MY BLANK and THE LAST MESSAGE RECEIVED, will be curated collections of the original Tumblr posts, which have resonated with both teens and adults. The books will be published in 2016, dates to be announced.

“The emotions evoked by Emily Trunko’s Tumblrs are universally understood and felt,” says Easton. “We are excited to bring the Tumblr posts together into two unique book collections, DEAR MY BLANK and THE LAST MESSAGE RECEIVED, enabling readers to connect with the very real and relatable human content on a more personal level.”

EMILY TRUNKO is the creator of the Dear My Blank and The Last Message Received Tumblrs. Trunko was born and raised in a small town in Ohio and homeschooled.
