Title: Hold Me Tight
Author: Faith Sullivan
Release date: April 30, 2014
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Age Group: New Adult
Ebook available at: Kindle | Nook | Smashwords

HOLD ME TIGHT Synopsis:

He loves me. He loves me not.

Ivy's heart shatters upon hearing Eric's crushing ultimatum. Despite how much she cares for him, she won't give in to his demands. She has no choice but to leave, even if it's the hardest thing she's ever had to do.

She loves me. She loves me not.

When Ivy walks out, Eric can't help feeling betrayed. Unwilling to put her at risk, he values her safety above all else. By refusing to compromise, he's blindsided when she moves in with a man who's already stolen so much from him.

I love you. You love me not.

Lauren sees Eric and Ivy's split as an opportunity to end their relationship once and for all. When Ivy places herself at the mercy of Eric's rival, Lauren plots to destroy the fragile tie binding them together, even if she endangers Ivy's life in the process.

Excerpt:

But there’s something I have to do before this goes any further.

Slowly, I draw my head away from her embrace, finding the courage to finally meet her eyes. Her hair hasn’t been combed and her face is all tear-stained, but she has never looked more beautiful.

She stands, bracing herself against me. Her breath hitches when I gently start unbuttoning her shirt, but her eyes never leave my face. I stop partway up, raising the bottom half of her cami up and over her baby bump. Dropping down, I run my hands across her stomach, feeling her shiver against my fingertips. Looking up at her, I place my lips on her bellybutton, kissing the child that’s growing within her, the miracle we created.

“I will never ask you to choose again,” I say solemnly, my voice nothing but a whisper.

Ivy starts to cry in earnest, placing her hands atop mine.

“You are my heart now. Whatever happens to you happens to me.” I kiss each one of her knuckles as she sighs deeply, like she’s been longing with all her soul to hear me say these words. “I know I’m not as brave as you are, but I promise to try harder.”

“Eric, stop. You’re the bravest man I know,” she proclaims with a tender fierceness, tears shining in her eyes.

“I’m just so afraid of losing you,” I mutter, breaking down.

“Oh, Eric,” she whimpers, sobbing right along with me. “I know, baby... I know.”

I lean back against the wall, guiding her onto my lap. We don’t say anything more. We just sit there and hold each other, savoring the moment.

My Last Kiss by Bethany Neal

What if your last kiss was with the wrong boy?

Cassidy Haines remembers her first kiss vividly. It was on the old covered bridge the summer before her freshman year with her boyfriend of three years, Ethan Keys. But her last kiss--the one she shared with someone at her seventeenth birthday party the night she died--is a blur. Cassidy is trapped in the living world, not only mourning the loss of her human body, but left with the grim suspicion that her untimely death wasn't a suicide as everyone assumes. She can't remember anything from the weeks leading up to her birthday and she's worried that she may have betrayed her boyfriend.

If Cassidy is to uncover the truth about that fateful night and make amends with the only boy she'll ever love, she must face her past and all the decisions she made--good and bad--that led to her last kiss.

Bethany Neal's suspenseful debut novel is about the power of first love and the haunting lies that threaten to tear it apart.

Goodreads Summary

This book is a great, dramatic YA murder mystery that keeps you guessing until the very end. You can share in the frustration of the loss of Cassidy's memories as she tries to piece things back together and figure out what truly happened the night that she died.

I would definitely be on the same mission as Cassidy if I was in the same situation as her. She knows that she didn't committ suicide however everyone still alive on earth suspects that she did. Clearing up the facts would be my one and only fixation. I really like how intense the book gets as you get deeper and deeper into the story. It only gets better the more pages you read. Also the characters were very well developed and believable and it was a lot of fun for me to follow Cassidy as she traces the facts through them. All in all, definitely worth a read for those into the murder mystery genre.

On the Road to Find Out by Rachel Toor

A funny, uplifting debut about running, romance—and dealing with college rejection and other hurdles

On New Year’s Day, Alice Davis goes for a run. Her first ever. It’s painful and embarrassing, but so was getting denied by the only college she cares about. Alice knows she has to stop sitting around and complaining to her best friend, Jenni, and her pet rat, Walter, about what a loser she is. But what doesn’t know is that by taking those first steps out the door, she is setting off down a road filled with new challenges—including vicious side stitches, chafing in unmentionable places, and race-paced first love—and strengthening herself to endure when the going suddenly gets tougher than she ever imagined.

Goodreads Summary

Its odd to see someone that is a senior in high school just randomly pick up running. Not that we dont pick up new habbits as we go on in our lives, however running is one that people usually love or hate. Alice does just that though and randomly decides to start as a "stride" in the right direction in her life.

Being an occasional runner myself, I found this book to be relatable as Alice goes through all the aches and typical struggles of a beginning runner. This is a good story about a young girl that is lost and looking to find her way when she faces college rejection. I found her communication with her beloved pet rat strange but mildly charming as it added a light comedy to the story. The running excerpts from the story is where this book really shines though. If you have every run a race before, or ever plan to, this book describes what it is like very well. For all of the runners out there, or those aspiring to break out of your lazy streak and put in some strides this weekend, this book is definitely worth looking into.

One Man Guy by Michael Barakiva

Tuesday, April 29, 2014

Funny and heartfelt, One Man Guy brings to mind the raucous family humor and gentle romance of My Big Fat Greek Wedding, as told with David Sedaris–style wit

Alek Khederian should have guessed something was wrong when his parents took him to a restaurant. Everyone knows that Armenians never eat out. Between bouts of interrogating the waitress and criticizing the menu, Alek’s parents announce that he’ll be attending summer school in order to bring up his grades. Alek is sure this experience will be the perfect hellish end to his hellish freshman year of high school. He never could’ve predicted that he’d meet someone like Ethan.

Ethan is everything Alek wishes he were: confident, free-spirited, and irreverent. He can’t believe a guy this cool wants to be his friend. And before long, it seems like Ethan wants to be more than friends. Alek has never thought about having a boyfriend—he’s barely ever had a girlfriend—but maybe it’s time to think again.

Goodreads Summary

This progressive novel explores topics that are becoming more mainstream in todays society. It used to be that you wouldnt see many novels written on topics like homosexuality, however as these lifestyle choices become more accepted in society, the market is exploding.

"One Man Guy," is witty and charming in its own way, and even those squeamish on a book of this nature will find something to like in the pages. Those worried that this may be a book of oppression and a lack of acceptance of the homosexual lifestyle need not worry. Barakiva keeps a positive light and doesnt venture into the dark side like many other novels out there. All in all, this is a book about first love, unorthodox or not, and portrays it with a touch of innocence and a load of humor.

Knight of My Dreams by Lynsay Sands: Promo and Giveaway!

Teaser!

"I am fi-fine," she got out a little breathlessly as he caught her arms to steady her. "Really," Alice added when he continued to look concerned. After a brief pause, he swallowed and nodded, then turned to grab at the reins of his mount.
Her gaze moved distractedly back to the small swatch of blue cloth on the ground by her feet. She was about to draw Jonathan's attention to it, when she was suddenly caught by the waist and lifted onto his horse.
Alice promptly began to protest. "Oh, really, my lord. There is no need for us to ride. I can walk back to the clearing. I—"
At last she gave up her protests, mostly because he was ignoring her. He mounted in front of her and drew her hands around his waist.
"Hold on," he instructed.
Alice nodded against his back, breathing in deeply to try to steady her nerves. It was rather novel to be in such close proximity to a man. She had never done so before. Unmarried women were simply not allowed such familiarity. Of course, this was an unusual circumstance, and…

KNIGHT OF MY DREAMS:
From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Lynsay Sands comes a classic short story of a knight in need of a bride …
Lady Alice knows she is not the type to entice a man. She's too voluptuous, too intelligent, too strong minded. Why, she even reads! But then Jonathan, Earl of Fairley, arrives at court. Tall, dark and handsome, the knight is any woman's dream. And he has just been ordered by the king to find a bride … and Alice is to help him!

Jonathan has been evading his mother's matchmaking schemes for years, so why does she insist that Lady Alice isn't for him? Alice is only to aid in his search for a bride, yet Jonathan can't help but be distracted by her glorious hair—the color of a sunset—and a figure that is like a lush berry about to burst to full ripeness … Has Jonathan fallen prey to love?

Second Star by Alyssa B. Sheinmel

Monday, April 28, 2014

A twisty story about love, loss, and lies, this contemporary oceanside adventure is tinged with a touch of dark magic as it follows seventeen-year-old Wendy Darling on a search for her missing surfer brothers. Wendy’s journey leads her to a mysterious hidden cove inhabited by a tribe of young renegade surfers, most of them runaways like her brothers. Wendy is instantly drawn to the cove’s charismatic leader, Pete, but her search also points her toward Pete's nemesis, the drug-dealing Jas. Enigmatic, dangerous, and handsome, Jas pulls Wendy in even as she's falling hard for Pete. A radical reinvention of a classic, Second Star is an irresistible summer romance about two young men who have yet to grow up--and the troubled beauty trapped between them.

Goodreads Summary

Those fascinated by love triangles need to look no further. Does she go for the dark and mysterious drug dealer, or the more clean cut better choice. For most teenage girls this always seems to be the issue, torn between bad boy or nice guy. Wendy becomes immersed in the California surf culture in this re-telling of the classic Peter Pan story.

It was interesting to analyze the parallels that were attempted to be created to this story and the Disney classic. It does have its charm and certainly holds its place in being a modern take on the timeless fairy tale. The Peter Pan story with drugs just didnt appeal to me as much as it would to many others. That being said, I can see how this book would appeal to many young adult readers these days. Those who love the imagery of California cove and romance on a surfboard during sunset in the ocean will love this book. It is an interesting read and worth checking out.

A Really Awesome Mess by Trish Cook and Brendan Halpin: 250+ Book Giveaway! (USA/CAN)

Thursday, April 24, 2014

A hint of Recovery Road, a sample of Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, and a cut of Juno. A Really Awesome Mess is a laugh-out-loud, gut-wrenching/heart-warming story of two teenagers struggling to find love and themselves.

Two teenagers. Two very bumpy roads taken that lead to Heartland Academy.
Justin was just having fun, but when his dad walked in on him with a girl in a very compromising position, Justin's summer took a quick turn for the worse. His parents' divorce put Justin on rocky mental ground, and after a handful of Tylenol lands him in the hospital, he has really hit rock bottom.

Emmy never felt like part of her family. She was adopted from China. Her parents and sister tower over her and look like they came out of a Ralph Lauren catalog-- and Emmy definitely doesn't. After a scandalous photo of Emmy leads to vicious rumors around school, she threatens the boy who started it all on Facebook.

Justin and Emmy arrive at Heartland Academy, a reform school that will force them to deal with their issues, damaged souls with little patience for authority. But along the way they will find a ragtag group of teens who are just as broken, stubborn, and full of sarcasm as themselves. In the end, they might even call each other friends.
A funny, sad, and remarkable story, A Really Awesome Mess is a journey of friendship and self-discovery that teen readers will surely sign up for.

Afterparty by Daryl Gregory

Wednesday, April 23, 2014

It begins in Toronto, in the years after the smart drug revolution. Any high school student with a chemjet and internet connection can download recipes and print drugs, or invent them. A seventeen-year-old street girl finds God through a new brain-altering drug called Numinous, used as a sacrament by a new Church that preys on the underclass. But she is arrested and put into detention, and without the drug, commits suicide.

Lyda Rose, another patient in that detention facility, has a dark secret: she was one of the original scientists who developed the drug. With the help of an ex-government agent and an imaginary, drug-induced doctor, Lyda sets out to find the other three survivors of the five who made the Numinous in a quest to set things right.

A mind-bending and violent chase across Canada and the US, Daryl Gregory's Afterparty is a marvelous mix of William Gibson’s Neuromancer, Philip K. Dick’s Ubik, and perhaps a bit of Peter Watts’s Starfish: a last chance to save civilization, or die trying.

Goodreads Summary

Afterparty grips you and doesn't let go until the bitter end.  The book starts with a bang...a suicide and practically races to the finish line after that first, unforgettable scene.  The book is told mainly from Lyda's perspective.  The reader will receive an in-depth understanding of Lyda's complicated mind.   When Lyda hears about Numinous, she realizes that Numinous just may be a drug she helped develop and that she must now try to stop its spread.  I found myself hoping that Lyda and her motley gang could help fix what Numinous destroyed.  I loved how the author detailed the effects and urgent addiction of the drug.  The reader will feel the need to see the drug destroyed.

It's hard not to get attached to the characters in this novel.  I found myself really rooting for Lyda and admiring her while still being horrified that someone with a brilliant mind chose to develop a drug like Numinous.  I liked the secondary characters and thought they played their supportive roles perfectly.  The plot was well-developed and easy to follow.  The setting is in the future, but it's not such a different future as our present give or take a few electronics.  The relationships between the characters were interesting as they all had their reasons for thinking and feeling about one another in a certain way.  Overall, this book is recommended to adult readers.

Goodreads Summary

Author Bio/Links:

I was born in a manger and grew up in a log cabin where I read law books by firelight. . . Oh, wait, that wasn't me, that was someones else.

I had a hard childhood. Hard for my parents. Not that bad for me. I was an Army brat, moved around a lot. Then I didn't settle down. I just kept moving. Why? What inner turmoil drove me? Mmmm, I gotta say none. I just have a short attention span. Easily bored.

I'm living in Tiburon, CA right now. How much longer? Don't know.

I've written 150 books. That's right, I said 150. In your face, Stephen King. Granted, mine are shorter than his. And less popular. And less likely to be made into a major motion picture. And I guess i don't play in a band with Dave Barry, either, do I?

Sorry: Salieri complex acting up.

Most of those books -- and by "most" I mean 149 out of 150 -- I wrote with my wife, the lovely, the talented, the eternally hot, Katherine (K.A.) Applegate. We've been together for 29 years. Which is a long time. Looooong time. Sweet lord what a long . . . No babe, I'm not implying anything.

Damn internets: you never know who's reading things.

Anyway, GONE. My goal in writing GONE? To creep you out. To make you stay up all night reading, then roll into school tired the next day so that you totally blow the big test and end up dropping out of school.

GONE. Imagine a world where every adult vanishes in an instant.

In Accord by Kristin Chambers

Monday, April 21, 2014

It's October in Buffalo as four long-time friends, The In Accord Book Club, gather around a fireplace while a fierce windstorm amasses strength outside. They are deeply disappointed with the unfaithful characters and lackluster resolution of the novel they've met to discuss. When they agree to each write a richer, more satisfying conclusion in lieu of their next month's selection, none has any idea of the tempests about to erupt in her own world. Their intertwined lives and personal journeys, by turns humorous, sad, touching, and inspiring, furnish the raw ingredients for the new epilogue each writes.

Goodreads Summary

Upon reading the synopsis of this book I was immediately captivated and intrigued by what the pages of this novel would hold. The separate endings that each of the characters write are all interesting and different enough from each other to keep each new take fresh. All the characters are very believeable and bring a different flavor to the table of the story that keeps you interested and wanting to know the rest of the story.

I really liked the idea that someone is writing about a book club and it doesn't come off as the stereotypical older American's getting together over tea. While that does hold its place and is a comfort for many, this book goes far beyond the Sunday afternoon discussion of the typical classics. I loved how the personal lives played into the renditions that each of the characters made to the end od the story. Overall this is worth reading and caters to all types of readers out there.

Then he settled back against his pillow. “I always have sausage, eggs, and hash browns on Saturdays.” “Believe it or not, I remember.” Cambri retrieved a breakfast tray from the kitchen and set it on his lap, mentally preparing herself for what would come. “What’s that supposed to be?” Her father stared at the food in disgust. “Oatmeal, whole wheat toast, and freshly squeezed OJ,” said Cambri smoothly. “Try it. You might like it.” “Why isn’t there butter on this toast? Where’s my sausage and hash browns?” “Your heart doesn’t want bacon and hash browns. It wants oatmeal.” “Bullwinkle.” Excerpt 2 In Cambri’s life, mistakes were like boomerangs. She’d make them, regret them, and launch them as hard and far as she could to get away from them. Then suddenly, after she thought they were long gone, they would come sailing back to thunk her hard on the chest. Like now. Cambri could practically hear the figurative boomerang whooshing toward her as recognition dawned on Jace’s face—the kind of recognition that came when seeing someone from your past you’d rather not see. “Hey, Jace,” was all she could come up with to say. She clutched the pruning shears, frantically trying to think of something more. “Long time no see.” He glanced at the shears, and a few awkward seconds passed before he responded. “Yeah, long time.” “I was just, uh . . .” Cambri brushed a few dried leaves off the shears and held them up—“trying these out. They’re sharper than I expected. I’ll take them.” “Will you take the hose too, or was it the sprinkler head you were also trying out?” Excerpt 3 She rested her hand on his arm, but when he tensed, she pulled it away. “University Park and Charlotte are beautiful cities with so much to offer, but Bridger isn’t without its charms. Coming back here is like entering a different world.” “An archaic world.” “That’s not what I’m talking about,” said Cambri. “People here know and care about each other. When you walk down the street, you pass friends instead of strangers. The air is cleaner, the pace slower, and the world calmer. I’m pretty sure the sky is even bluer.” Jace slung his bag over her shoulder and leveled her a hard look. “Actions speak louder than words, Cambri. Or are you forgetting you left for bluer skies six years ago?” Her gaze held steady. “Sometimes it takes seeing other skies to know which is bluer.” One eye brow quirked as he considered her words. “What are you saying? That you’ve had your fill of city life and want to move back?” Cambri looked away. Was she saying that? No, of course not. That would be crazy. She was happy in Charlotte. “All I’m saying is that I appreciate Bridger a lot more than I used to.” He let out a low chuckle that didn’t sound even close to humorous. “Like I said, actions speak louder than words.” He started to walk past her, then paused, looking beyond her to the back door. “You talk of passing friends instead of strangers, but in my experience, friends are really just strangers disguised as familiar faces.” His arm brushed against her shoulder as he left, and an uncomfortable, almost palpable, sensation spread down her arm and landed with a thud in her gut.

Goodreads Summary

Author Bio/Links:

I am the author of "Selling Hope," a middle grade historical fiction novel set in 1910 Chicago on the vaudeville circuit, and "Autumn Winifred Oliver Does Things Different," an historical fiction account of the beginnings of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park through the eyes of 11-year-old Autumn. AND: Coming Fall of 2012: Ophiuchus et al in "The 13th Sign." I never met a writing genre I didn't like. Some may call it a lack of focus; I prefer to think of it as a lust for life. I adore "kid lit," though, because I think it's the most honest writing out there. My writing gigs have included a lot of licensed character books: Scooby-Doo (Ruh-roh!), Strawberry Shortcake (Berry cool!), Bugs Bunny (Ain't I a stinker?), the PowerPuff Girls (Game over!) and next year, the new Holly Hobbie & Friends (Hey, girl!) But enough about me...

Sixteen-year-old Mara Westray has just lost her mother, and now, being shipped off to live with the father she doesn’t know is not how she imagined grieving. She’s already counting down the days until she turns eighteen and can leave the tiny island of Swans Landing.

But from the moment she steps off the ferry, nothing is as ordinary as it looks. Whispers of a haunting song on the wind make her see impossible things, and she isn’t sure she can trust her judgment about what is real and what isn’t anymore. Maybe she can’t even trust her judgment about quiet Josh Canavan, whose way of speaking in riddles and half-truths only confuses her more, luring her deeper into the secrets hidden beneath the ocean’s surface.

As she tries to unravel the events that led to her mom fleeing the island sixteen years ago, Mara finds that the biggest secret of all is only the beginning.
